Of all the tracks on the album this one was the most heavily edited. We got the full version from Progeny and remastered it. At first it seems less effective, less dynamic, but after a few listens it becomes familiar and - after all - we should want to hear the original performance shouldn't we?
The PC has been a bit temperamental so if it sounds bad I will have to delete and re-upload it as I can say that the master is STUPENDOUS!!!!

Back In those days in concert they didn't come out to just play their music, they played with such a ferocity it was like being run over by a truck. With their virtuosity and that much power it was unmatched.

So right. Angry young men they are no longer. Modern day critics of prog should be forced to listen to stuff like this

Well-stated! You watch Steve Howe within the past 10 years, his playing still brilliant -- but I've noticed something lacking about him. I get it, he's older now, but seeing him playing now it seems the passion/fire "ferocity" is not there. Don't get me wrong, SH is one of my all-time favorite players, it's just something I've observed.

One of the greatest live guitar solos ever recorded, and the whole "improvised interpolation" (from 8:32 until Jon rteturns on vocals) is a riveting evocation of the face of war, and what it does to people. It's right up there with "Machine Gun" (both songs were inspired by the Vietnam War). This is briliant both as an evocation and as sheer absolute music, the logic and flawless precision of their playing, especially Squire and Howe. The bit at 9:44-10:05 is a particularly powerful example of the way Howe captures fear and anguish in the field. And the furious stretch at the peak of the track around 11-12 minutes, before the "crash" into the desolated still of the organ point and 2Death defying, mutilated" is devastating... It's more than twenty years since I found out about the connection of this song to the Vietnam War and suddenly heard it in a new light; it's still every bit as relevant and compelling.

@@louise_rose what's cool is 'Harold Land' which sounds like the storyline to this song. I like how it goes from really tragic to optomistic, and accepting. Usually if you change from a minor to a major key it's too obvious but I think because it's primarily driven by the bass the key change is understated by Tony Kaye, and Howe. This is the only song I know where I have never stopped playing it and moved on to anything else. If it's playing I'm listening all the way through. Then I usually go on a Yes binge.

I learnt this whole triple album cover to cover as a teenager. Wore through two vinyl copies and two CD copies (so far). And now, 50 years later you're telling me that I have to "re-learn" it?!?

Of all of the original Yessongs issue performances this is the one that had the most 'distant' vocals, and now you've balanced it all so they're in the right place. I find that amazing. Also I wasn't aware of the original's edit of the intro or the guitar solo, presumably for length on vinyl (can't remember if this version was on the Progeny issue). Still the best guitar solo in this song compared to all others, IMO

I keep coming back to this. Even with the bits that were edited out from the original issue I feel like I know Steve's solo in my bones. But what's really fantastic about this is the pan so that, during the solo, you can focus on Rick on the right if you want, and I really love to hear him just supporting the rest of the music, being a team member.

@@sigil5772 Yes, I can easily hear some stretches of this track in my head without even putting on the record, down to Steve's note bends and Alan's hi-hat rides...I have that kind of auditive memory for music (and for some things I've heard people saying or have read) - even though I'm not really a practising musician, certainly not a guitarist...🎶🎹

Yes, it's absolutely great! I have loved the Yessongs album version for decades, especially Steve's ferocious guitar work, it's really nice to get to hear the unedited recording (I do think they were right to mix down Wakeman's keyboards during the central section of the song though - not because he would be bad, but because it sounds cleaner and sharper with only Steve, Alan and Chris in focus).

Only fault I'm finding in the mix is that the girl yelling that perfectly timed, deliriously happy "YEAAAAHHH!" just after 0:23 is one of the great serendipitous moments in live recording, and IMO it must be punched up.

@@ChollieD Well, I think they were right to mix down Wakeman's organ during the central instrumental jam/solo part of the song (and to compress the sound a little overall, making it more crisp). Not because he would be bad, he isn't, but because he sounds a bit distracting to me...I love the clean, sharp - and yet ferocious - trio sound during these precious five, six minutes.
