It’s okay I read “The 5 love languages”. Her love language is “acts of service”. I think that’s what it was called. Realizing that our love languages were diff helped me hear her saying “I love you” when she never actually says it in words.

If I had to say the most important point about learning a new language or skill is ... It's persistence.. The worst enemy of learning is procrastinating and leaving Japanese for say, 1 day.. then 2 .. then its a week and BOOM you struggle to open up the text book. This has happened to me, and probably happens to most of us, but the more I keep going bit by bit.. The better my Japanese gets and before you know it you can listen in on some ANIME or talk to someone and you don't have to THINK.. you can just flow because you've already learnt and spoken about the concept so many times! GOODLUCK!

It's funny, I just learned the word 卒業 yesterday due to something that happened recently. It feels good to recognize words after encountering them in videos/games/music/etc. Also, it's interesting how the て-form of a verb provides context/reasoning for the next phrase in a similar way to the で particle. Instructional video as always, you're helping people improve their skills and reach for their goals. ありがとうございました！

I often see 旅行 used with する - for Q5 at 18:55, would using した旅行 instead of 行った旅行 be awkward/incorrect? Love the E > J questions btw, thanks for another great lesson.

した旅行 is weird. 旅行 is indeed used with する even in this videos examples. But 旅行 is a noun that means “trip”. So the “trip I went on” is more natural then the “trip I did”.

Resisting the urge to watch this video just as it has been uploaded is so hard! I started book 1 back in Feb last year, and I'm currently on the last chapter of book 3. I'll do a revision round of book 3 before moving on to book 4. I've got two personal milestones set for my Japanese study as of now - completing book 4 by 19th November this year before the Pokémon BDSP release so I can play the games in Japanese with confidence, and reaching the point in the book where I can catch up with George's uploads. Hopefully, I'll be revisiting this video by September :)

I got a question for you sense you seem a bit experienced, I can't find an answer on any forum or video. Why when kanji is paired together with another to make a word do they (in most cases) have a completely different pronunciation?

​@@shortfusedynamite5166 I suppose you're referring to cases where the pronunciation of the second kanji in a compound word changes, such as in 手紙 (tegami), where 紙 (kami) is pronounced as "gami". It generally happens when the second kanji starts with a sound that has a version with a dakuten ( か→が). I'm loving the english to japanese translations, but I feel like they are harder that the japanese to english examples, as in the sentence has more advanced grammar not that translating is harder (well that too)

Got 9 out of 14 right, I didn't know おすすめ at number 4, at number 6 i used に instead of で (rookie mistake at this point), at the second number 4, I forgot に could be used to make adverbs, and finally, at the second number 5, I went with「去年の家族旅行をしたが最高に楽しいでした」. Overall, I'm happy with my score, and mostly annoyed that I fumbled on particle usage for the most part, and as for my last mistake, I really need to read some more stuff to get more exposure to modifying with verbs (an important grammar indeed), which I'll fully admit I've been kinda postponing due to life and laziness 😅. I'm also currently only 5 videos behind the latest video, and I'll fully admit I'm as excited as I am scared to continue on to the next book lessons, and the next book, since I won't have ジョジ先生のビデオ to help drill some stuff in for a while. But considering that when I first purchased the series I wasn't sure of if or when I'd catch up to this point, can't say I can complain about my progress overall. I'm actually able to read, write, and speak a bit of Japanese now, which was something I only dreamed up a year ago, and I fully aim to keep improving on these skills, and for that, thank you 先生, you're truly one of the best teachers I've ever had.

Oh wow!!!! I remember even thinking… の方 could be in the sentence but isn’t required. And I thought… I should make a small section in book 3 where we teach that to show how having or not having の方 impacts the sentence. All in that brief moment I was thinking of の方 but blinded to it. Funny how the brain works.

Man, has the Japanese language changed in like the last 2 months? Cause pitch accent went from a Dogen thing, to something that everyone, that has even a tangential connection to Japanese learning, is talking about. Yesterday even my mostly swords and history youtuber (Metatron) who also talks about language learning once in a while made a vid about it.

I was also surprised to see so many other creators talk about it. It seems that everyone is talking about it since I made the “Pitch accent is stupid. Change my mind.” video and then Matt and I “sparred” on the topic. That first video was a bit inflammatory, but I’m glad it seemed to open up the door. It made me realized all of the KZbin teachers of Japanese are paying attention to what the others are doing. It also made me more aware of the struggle pitch accent is causing some students.

Lol, the ongoing pitch accent thing. So, George, if you see this, a real life example where it did cause confusion. I was talking to my ex girlfriend (can I please take a moment to cry?) And I said このへん and she was super confused and asked me what I was talking about. Because I said この変 rather than この辺. And she was legit confused. HEn vs heN.

Actually, speaking of pitch accent, something interesting happened there. 海外 on its own was KAigai, but 海外旅行 was kaIGAI RYOko. Kind of like 藤 and 藤の花.

I also speak Thai, but because I am tone deaf, I don't sound native. I still don't have problems communicating with most Thai people though. As long as I avoid ไกล/ใกล้ which is the only word pair I really struggle with.

Good job getting such a high score! The で and the に are tricky for sure, but luckily it won’t change the meaning in a way that would make you misunderstood. They are what I call “allowable errors”. Allowable errors are any error that doesn’t stop a conversation from moving forward.
