I liked this ending for two reasons. The first and main reason is that he finally sings Ellie a song he wrote for her. I think that was really essential. The second is the Harry Potter thing. It was clear throughout the movie that the phenomena affected more than just him and not only the Beatles, so it seems appropriate that other people have specific memories that were erased from the masses.

What i interpret that Harry Potter line to mean is that he isn’t from our world, he just happens to be from a world where he has the same beatles, coca cola and cigarettes as we do, and when he somehow landed in this alternate world, that world has things we also have, but he hasn’t heard of. I like this ending more than the other because it implies alot more creativity with the multiverse stuff. I would have prefered if she just talks about a character we have never heard of, but Harry Potter also works

Great ending but I see why they couldn’t use it. Right at the start there they are driving on the wrong side of the road and the steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car. That kind of mistake takes a viewer right out of the story!

This is just a much better ending than the abrupt stop shown in the movie. It also shows that Jack can actually write a good song. Added with the deleted Anna de Armas scene, this movie could be much much better than it currently is.

I prefer the original ending, but this feels more intimate. And shows he has the ability to write songs. I'm glad I watched it. Lily, as always, is just luminous! We are lucky to get to see both endings. Another example is the director's cut of 'that thing you do'. Again, I don't like it as much, but it gives us a different view of his future. But it also says he will become a jazz DJ. Nice, but it's a big step down from creating a school for music. Neither ending diminished the other.

no the alternate ending was suppose to be a different version of the movie. In the movie he went into an alternate universe where the beetles didn't exist, harry potter, etc. The alternate ending was suppose to show you that it wasn't about him at all, that SHE made the alternate universe that the guy she loved was a star, etc. So she remembered all the real things in the world, but her "creation" only knew what she had made him know and she remembered when he didn't remember harry potter. So the movie was about him, but the alternate ending was in case they wanted the movie to really be about her, and he was just a player in the story, not the lead.

This is one of my favorite films from the past decade. I’m not gonna say it’s the best film. Or the most intriguing. Or the most creative. Or anything like that… But what I will say is that I enjoyed the entire film from start to finish. And when it was over, it’s genuinely made me feel good… But not in some sappy corny way. When Jack asks who is Harry Potter, this alternate ending opens what could have been a new twist cleverly suggesting the need for a sequel. Since Jack never heard of Harry Potter, then the universe he came from is one that includes the Beatles but excludes Harry Potter. This in turn implies an entire host of multiple universe possibilities. Did the Jack from the non-Beatle universe swap places with the Jack from the Beatle universe? And what about the scruffy bearded man and the middle aged blonde? How did they switch places with their dopplegangers? A sequel could occur in the Beatle universe with a non-Beatle Jack trying to survive using knowledge that may be lacking where he is now.

I was expecting the alternate ending to be him waking up from a coma in hospital where the nurse and night porter are the lady and Russian man who had been playing him the Beatles and talking to him along with his girlfriend while he was asleep. All the other people he met could have been the doctor, consultant and tv personalities all talking to him to help revive him etc. He then realises after waking up that it's all been a dream and that he has a second chance with Ellie. Her mentioning Harry Potter gag would still work.

Another commenter, on another one of these Yesterday videos, posted a very lengthy and convincing theory that the main character died in the bike accident, and that Lilly James ended up marrying the friend in the end, while the rest of the film was a fantasy of Lilly's, who imagined what would have happened if he had lived through the bike crash.

That was actually a really good ending. Both would have been great. I like that he gets to write a good song after the whole movie of playing others.
