I did a similar thing in 2015 in China, but went out to a remote village on the border of mongolia with no hotels or anything, and the taxi was so confused why he was dropping us in this super remote village. We knocked on doors to find a place to stay. We had one of the best nights of our lives hanging out with the locals and sleeping on their floor. I love China so much and feel it's misrepresented in so many ways.

I lived in China for almost 3 years and 95% of what I found online about it beforehand was a lie. I LOVED living there due to the people, the amazing food, the adventure of a new place and the beauty of where I lived. It’s such a huge beautiful country that if you traveled non-stop for a year in it, you’d never see it all.

As a "Laowai" (foreigner) living in China for 7 years, I can tell ive met some of the most heartwelcoming people. Even with a huge language barrier, body language, a smile and a bit empathy and compasion will be the only communication you need to connect with this beautiful people. I'm an American who has lived in China for 11 years, and I want to thank you guys for coming to China with an open mind. So many people who talk about China online and in the media do so with an agenda, and most don't understand the country at all. The reality is that China is not a perfect country (no country is), but it is incredible in many ways. People in the US are constantly bombarded with negative information about China to the point that they imagine it as a scary, dystopian nightmare. I highly recommend that more Americans and Europeans visit China to see it for themselves. People-to-people exchanges are vital, and if more people understand China better, it will help ease the insane geopolitical tensions.

This channel has helped me in so many ways the past few years. From starting to learn how to snowboard all the way through my next adventure of climbing mountains in europa and South America..Covid brought me down in a deep dark depression that I only shared with myself and I was just starting to follow and watch this channel right before hand 2018. I still struggle with depression and such, but with the tools that I've been shown and how to use them, I've managed to want to continue on living and move outward in life with exploration of different countries on a budget, meet new people. Post covid it seems like there is a lot more youtubers coming to china and challenging the narrative they see on the media, and discovering this unique and interesting country for themselves! And as you experienced, China isn't nearly or scary or depraved as many westerners worry about (I mean, you got free starbucks! lol) I moved here in my 30's originally for 6 months and I haven't left since because of how much I like it here (especially in comparison to living in the US.) looking forward to your next videos!

As someone who currently lives in China and has done for 6 years, this makes me so happy. I love my life here, the people are so friendly and life is so comfortable. Of course, when it comes to visas and permits it can get a little stressful, but that's nothing new. I had just as much trouble visiting the US from the UK as I did when I first travelled to China from the UK. Glad you guys finally made it out and are able to educate more people about what life is really like here!

I agree, I also moved from the UK to China around 10 years ago. It shouldn't be easy to obtain the right to live in someone else's country. The UK gives out passports like candy at a sweetshop and this means a lot people moving to the UK are less than desirable. In China, sure you can come study for a short time but if you want to live here long term , you aren't going to get a free ride. That's how it should be.

Dancing in the streets is generally not allowed. Chinese people should go to parks or squares to dance. You can dance to your heart's content as long as it doesn't disturb traffic or other people, and there are usually no police there.

I agree with you. I visited Shanghai prior to COVID with my family and two kids. The people are so friendly and willing to help. I have been to over 35 countries and I would say this is my favorite by far. Selfie s with everyone. Specially our kids everyone wanted one with the little ones. Love what you all do.

As an American living in China for the past 5 years… the majority of the people here are so incredibly warm-hearted and welcoming. There’s so much that people outside of China would never or could never understand or see about life here. I’m so happy that this series is bringing new light into y’all’s eyes, but also the people that watch this video. As a British person who has lived in China for the past ten years I was confident that their experience would be great and their preconceptions would be quickly dissipated, their eyes have been slightly opened but to really realise how propagandised you are in the west it takes a long time living outside. The irony is that the US advises against travel to China when in reality you are at far more danger travelling to the US. I hope more people visit China and open their eyes, its really one of the best countries in the world to travel, its cheap (or at least it can be), transportation is cheap and convenient, it has unrivalled history and culture and its probably one of the safest countries in the world.

I really adore this video because I'm currently on exchange in China and I am overwhelmed by the kindness of strangers here and how easy it is to become instant friends with anyone. I have had so many fascinating conversations with strangers on the train, with taxi drivers and even people on the elevator. I wanted to add though that the people Matt took photos with were not police - it's funny here but security officers wear practically the same uniforms as police officers so it is very hard to tell them apart even for locals, but there are hardly any actual police on the street so don't worry!

Great video. But I have to point out: 1. The men in navy blue uniforms with whom you took selfie are actully security guards hired by property management companies. There are not many policemen patrolling the streets as foreigners might think. 2. The tiny car you were given a ride in is designed for grandpas' or grandmas' trip to grocery stores or for them to pick up their grandchildren from kindergartens. That's why there's not much room for adults. 3. People with whom you danced together were wearing traditional clothing of the Uygurs.

I was quire suprised that yest theory haven't traveled to china over the years yall've been traveling the world and seeking discomfort and i've bee wating for yall to show this beautiful country to the world. The media doesn't even have to tell peope what to think for people to think a certain way. what i mean by that is if u keep on showing only one side of the story to someone, it wouldn't take long for people to form a styriotipical view of a counry (and this is tru for china and the US). I'm so greatful for what you guys are doing for this world, to show the truth, to set aside our differences as individuals and to connect with strangers and learn about eachother. I’m a high school science teacher in the US, and most of my days are filled with people who have become so jaded, and have such a pessimistic view on life in the US and the world in general. This is due to China's history of poverty. It used to be so bad everywhere, that having something to eat was never guaranteed. Asking someone if that had eaten that day is a more sincere way of ask "How are you?" to the Chinese, and they actually cared if you ate of not.

As someone who lives in China, I found it funny how you guys thought it would one of the hardest places to go 24 hours with needing help from strangers. Say what you will about the Chinese government, Chinese people are some of the friendliest and most helpful people on the planet. I'm glad you got to experience that, and that people got to see it. Mainland Chinese culture is a lot more privatized in the sense that while there is public surveillance for safety purposes, civilians filming in public is a lot less of a common thing, especially if it's foreigners. Definitely a cultural thing since people are a lot more reserved in general in public. Despite this, there are many mainland Chinese and foreign KZbin channels that do actively film in many Chinese cities, so I wouldn't say this is a widespread thing. Could just be a cop seeing a foreigner group filming with professional cameras and asking them to take it somewhere else. This cop could be an isolated incident too because I don't think this happens too often given the number of videos you can find online of people filming their experience in China. Also had a friend travel to Henan Province back in March who took a lot of videos and pictures for me and received no trouble from the police.

they dont actually track what u do all the time. i would say its similar to the surveillance system in the US, where by suspicious activity online would be raised to the system, and actually many countries do so to counter terrorism. so as long as u dont break any serious laws is fine. using vpn for personal use to surf youtube etc is fine as well @@nenadpopov3601

I don't know if anyone will read this, but I have been struggling a lot lately to deal with the negativity of the world and even stopped going on news sites and talking about politics... Then randomly I get a yes theory video pop up in my recommended and I decided to watch it (the London taxi video, shout out big reg) and now it's been about a week and the effect the positivity if this channel has had on my mood is measurable. I find that already I'm thinking about how the world really isn't as bad as it seems, and I even started doing things I usually avoid by thinking about 'seek discomfort'... Which is not like me at all, I'm pretty negative normally. So just wanted to say thanks!

I could not have clicked on this video faster! China was the first country in Asia I visited back in 2011 and made it to 10 other countries in Asia since then but would love to go back to China. Everyone was very friendly and warm and the food was phenomenal! When we were in Shanghai we met a young couple and after taking for 2 minutes they insisted we join them for a traditional tea ceremony and translated the whole thing for us.

It's like going to a shopping mall in the United States and feeling intimidated because there are mall rent-a-cops walking around. I had a teacher in high school who taught and lived for a few years in China and said it was her favorite place she's ever lived. I asked her why and she told me that it was really just because of the people, that most everyone there is just warm and happy and friendly and there's just a feeling of joy of living that is contagious. Yes, the government is strict, the political climate is icy and tense, but when you cut that away we are all just people looking for connection with other people.

I can attest that China is one of the most Welcoming places I have ever visited as a foreigner/tourist. I spent 11 days between Beijing and Hunan Province, and every day was a new adventure full of smiles and conversations with locals. Granted the sheer amount of photos I was asked to be in was surprising, but I was more than happy to make another person’s day if it put a smile on their face

Staffan makes me laugh so much it's insane. Him and Matt are so adorable in this episode. But in general, I find it super cool, that they're all close and hug each other. It's kind of rare for men nowadays to show platonic affection like this. It's just reinforcing support though. You guys are amazing! Sad to see Matt go! If you ever tour for a new member, let me know where I'll have to be 😅❤ Your job is my life's purpose. I don't want money, just the adventure. Life is senseless without experiencing it. I've been backpacking half my life (34 now) and it's the most impactful thing I've ever done in my life. Meeting completely different people (in the sense of culture) teaches me more than anything else on the planet. It makes me want to give up everything, sell my stuff and start walking. Which I've done before and it became the time of my life! My neverending wanderlust is somewhat "cured" by watching you wholesome people doing what I did since I was 20.

Chinese people are very friendly. But some foreigners will take advantage of this friendliness, so it causes a lot of resentment. And some public institutions in China tend to treat foreigners too favourably. This also caused a lot of resentment

@dR1923 You are lying. During the epidemic, China produced masks, medical supplies and other daily necessities for the world. How did they produce products if China had been in lockdown? China did lockdown certain areas in order to keep 0 Covid , from time to time and the rest of the country is still productive and people lived in a normal life. We (the USA) never had a real lockdown. That’s the reason we lost about 1.2 million lives.
