The first thing I thought of was bloom, where when a source of light is bright enough, the light "bleeds", it emulates light above the standard range by making it look like more light.

I believe the term you were looking for was "ambient lighting". Ambient light sources don't "shine" like you'd expect a normal light source to. Instead, they just sort of magically add a light value to every surface. They don't look anything like real light, but they are very useful for establishing a minimum level of visibility for a scene. So, yeah, exactly what this mod needed.

might've also been dynamic light, light that is calculated in real time for objects in a game to cast shadows. One example is the HL2 flashlight. So it seems in this mod all the dynamic lighting is obviously broken as the flashlight isn't working

So, this mod is Russian and probably is pretty eurojank. Here is some translation from the old posts from the mod authors. "We've overdone it with the dark gamma too much, it was not done on purpose, the color correction is already adjusted in the necessary scenes, and will fix the the gamma." There was also a mention of how if the mod is too dark you need to adjust it manually and there is even a button bound to increase brightness... except it doesn't work. My only theory is that the mod author has a very, VERY weird monitor or there is some bug that fucked up all of the lightning. Also, about the snowmobile, I found this post "Snowmobile was reworked from previous releases, in general, I had to see exactly how the players would like it. We tried with an emphasis on realism, in real life snowmobile also jerks to the side if you go too fast. But the conclusion begs itself, we just need a convenient controlled transport without the gimmicks, even if it's like in cod mw2." It also seems like they are planning to remaster this mod? How do you screw lighting up so badly? Why do these environments in broad daylight have pitch black shadows? Especially in a place like the arctic where sunlight would be refracting and bouncing off the white snow like crazy. Source's lightmap tech supports pseudo global illumination and this mod straight up ignores it in a setting where it would be the most noticeable. It wouldn't even be as bad if the flashlight worked as it did in base HL2 but as we see in the video that is *not* the case. Thanks for the new content, love you guys.

I'm fairly sure they just purposely toned down the lighting to an absolute minimum to create a "dark horror atmosphere" without ever actually booting up the game to see how it looks, same with all the other wacky cinematic effects... The flashlight being useless is the best part though

the overall darkness in the mod might be a problem in the video settings, some of the other playthroughs for this mod, they have the lightning working; try checking if the mod is HDR reliant on handling light, nonetheless, still amazing that you completed the mod in this screwed up state

We actually went into the video settings and maxed out the brightness. Beyond that, there was a function called something like "screen brightness mode" bound to the 'insert' key on the keyboard, but when we tried pressing it nothing happened.

Ohey, use host_timescale 5 instead of host_framerate. host_timescale literally speeds up or slows down the time by the amount you specify; a value of 5 is 5x faster, value of 1 is default normal time. This is way simpler and stabler than using host_framerate. You can also use mat_fullbright 1 to make everything very visibly bright; probably better than this tbh lol
