I am glad you mentioned the (literally stolen) Airplanes. I was following that story before I found and started watching your channel. It is not just a few hundred planes though, it is over 600 planes (about 2/3 of the commercially owned planes in the country). The leasing companies did not abandon the planes. They asked for them back and Russia refused. I think maybe a couple planes were stopped at international airports. After that they started only flying planes they owned outright internationally and blocked any attempts at recovery. Another point about the Airplanes is that Russia cannot buy replacement parts for any of those planes. And with tight maintenance regulations in aviation, if they use anything but approved parts on the planes, they become effectively worthless as the airworthiness of the plane cannot be guaranteed. The only short term solution is grounding some planes and cannibalizing them for parts. But even this is not a long term solution. And there is no way they will be able to lease any planes again. Apparently leasing planes is common practice in the Airline industry due to the high cost of new planes. Russia really is shooting itself in the foot with its actions as it is unlikely that any companies with lease them planes after this. I guess oligarchs should get into the domestic plane leasing business since they can't spend any money on their SuperYachts.
@bubba990092 жыл бұрын
Russia also signed a treaty that deals with the return of leased aircraft to the owner which of course they renegged on. But many people like to think they actually abide by arms control treaties - what a joke.

I’ve heard different figures quoted for the value of the seized planes, from 8 billion to 12 billion dollars. Something else to consider - would arresting the yachts and freezing foreign bank accounts of US congressmen put any sort of strain on the congressmen? Oh, it may annoy them, but they’ll have significant assets in the US. Th Russian oligarchs, have been investing rather heavily in foreign (ie - not Russian) businesses, making them especially vulnerable to the tactic of freezing assets. Which is like three orders of stupid on their part, but if you want to control your people, you might not want your people to be rich, so perhaps investing their money locally might not have rated highly for them?

There's great coverage of the airliner issues on the MentourPilot youtube channel. Many problems similar to the yachts with registration and insurance. It's also interesting because they can't get proper parts for them... As soon as they start putting non-certified parts in them they're completely worthless as they can't be certified airworthy (internationally) ever again. Also, this action means that no Russian airline company is likely to be able to lease planes again for a very long time. No matter what happens with Ukraine, Russian civilian aviation is screwed.

The thing with the Planes is, even when they would get them back they might be worthless. Because of sanctions they don't get spare parts, so the required manufacturer-specific maintenance is no longer possible. If this isn't done and protocoled correctly you won't get them international licensed. They could fly domestic but they would have to take apart half of the fleet to supply parts for the rest and I don't think this works at least not for long before such "Frankenstein-Plane" falls from the Russian sky. They have to get their Antonows, Ilyushin's und Tupolew's back. _Sorry to bother you maritime people with aviation stuff_ 😏

So, there will be all sorts of lawsuits. Realistically, the governments don’t want to hold onto and maintain these massive vessels through protracted lawsuits, appeals, etc. They’re seizing them to put financial/lifestyle pressure on the beneficial owners (who are friends with Putin), with the hope their aggravation leads to them getting in Putin’s ear.

Every country has the ability to reverse engineer. Most of the parts can be easily manufactured. The coding integration on the other hand will be a little harder. If we fear trade secrets of tech being stolen and being reversed engineered, these are full planes that they can dismantle, study, and test to build parts.

I've been having fun using Google maps in satellite mode to find these huge yachts (there's one toward the east end of the Panama canal and another anchored off Dubai, and yeah I know those aren't live views), and thank you for the Schadenfreude I experience with every arrest or seizure you report. I think DD's surname is pronounced dahVEEdovitch

I don't buy that any yacht of any size is "incognito" or "low profile". There must be deeper meanings behind owning so many vessels. Some meaning that requires a certain opulence and stature in its dealings. The obvious question is why does Abramovich feel the need to be so secretive? I do not accept that such behavior, owning six yachts is for "security" purposes.
@seandelaney17002 жыл бұрын
I have always assumed it is because he wants to jet off to any place and the yachts can't keep up with jets. I suppose it also has to do with, "I have the biggest, coolest and the most". I found it pretty interesting that he charters as well. However I do appreciate how much he likes the sea... I think?

Given the background of how these oligarchs got their money, and the evil, criminal behaviour of Putin, it’s far to far a stretch of my imagination to believe something far more covert military strategy is going on. I suspect these yachts are spying

The only thing which surprises me now is that Abramovich hasn't bought a shipyard yet... I mean that shipyard would already be halfway profitable from servicing his fleet alone and there have been some good shipyards like Nobiskrug or Blohm+Voss for sale in the last couple of years

Vanity Alekperov owns the shipbuilder and Barcelona’s port on behalf of the oligarchs. But he just got sanctioned, too. By Australia.

It’s like cockroaches scattering in all directions when you lift a rock. Trying to get somewhere where the vessel is “safe”. It’s about time that we, the Dutch people, built in a remote activated self destruct option in every Dutch built vessel.

What would be fun is if Ukrainians abroad could drop a few anti armour missiles into the engineering spaces of these yachts. Fantasy of course unless a government helped to make it possible. Shame.

Question: Will the repossessing of all these superyachts drive down the cost (de-valuate) the superyacht market overall?
@seandelaney17002 жыл бұрын
Supposedly they own a small percentage of the market I believe he has said, however they have always seemed anecdotally to me that they own many, and some of the biggest. So if this goes on I would think it might have some effect at least on the very large market, for folks like them and the Middle East seem to have a fair few of the largest.

an addendum: As to coming to Australia, that's just asking for trouble, Australia supports Ukraine in her struggle, so any Russian owned vessel is really putting themselves in harms way, especially a super yacht owned by a close supporter of Vladimir Putin.
