Two Jewish languages compared through Pater Noster… 🙃

Pater noster, qui es in cœlis: sanctificetur nomen tuum; adveniat regnum tuum; fiat voluntas tua, sicut in cœlo et in terra. Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie, et dimitte nobis debita nostra, sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris; et ne nos inducas in tentationem; sed libera nos a malo. Amen.

I think it's just because the Lord's Prayer is a short well-known text, that has been translated into hundreda of languages, which contains a good number of basic vocabulary items. I agree it's not the most culturally appropriate, however. Perhaps a few lines from Genesis 1 would be better, since the Old Testament is also used by Jews, and it's also suitable from a practical viewpoint - the Bible is the most translated text in the world.

I wish Ladino was widely spoken. It’s so cool how similar it is to Spanish but it’s rarer than Yiddish (which German speakers probably feel how cool the similarities are…which I’m jealous of 😂)

Yiddish is also rare outside of Hasidic communities
@Dhi_Bee
@Dhi_Bee 13 күн бұрын
@@user-kb8zv5ob2q Yeah but older people still speak it, like those who survived the Holocaust. I live in Florida where it’s still spoken in retirement communities & their kids (boomers) mix English with Yiddish words & sentences too. Not sure about the other generations after boomers. I speak Spanish too, so it would be cool to communicate with a Sephardic Jewish person in Ladino
@user-kb8zv5ob2q
@user-kb8zv5ob2q 13 күн бұрын
@@Dhi_Bee that's also true for Ladino but Ladino doesn't have a big isolated religious group that preserve the language so that's why it's rarer (And there aren't many Sephardi Jews in the USA so it's even rarer there)

Is Ladino not written using the Hebrew script?
@musiktranen

It used to be written in the Hebrew Rashi script, or occasionally in the square standard script, but now, the standard is to write it in Latin characters

There were also some Ladino books published using a Greek alphabet orthography but nowadays the Latin script orthography is far and large the most usual.

Why didn't Jews in Europe spoke every day any derivates of Aramaic as their ancestors in Judea, only the variations of host's languages?
@user-jy7ln3ej6i
@user-jy7ln3ej6i 6 күн бұрын
As many refugees and minorities did, jews also had to accommodate to the environment they lived in and adopt the local languages. The truth actually is, that Aramaic was also not the original language of the jews - it was simply the Lingua Franca spoken in the land of Israel because of influence of the Assyrian empire. The jews' original language is Hebrew, the language of the bible, of which you can still hear some words in Yiddish and Ladino - for example "Baalei Choivos" (debtors) in Yiddish and Sh'maim (sky) and Olam (world) in Ladino. And of course, as part of the jewish homeland return, and the reestablishment of the jewish state of Israel, the jews have revived their ancient Hebrew language and it is spoken nowadays in Israel.

How similar are Iraqi Arabic and Persian?
@Meteorul
@Meteorul 9 күн бұрын
They aren’t related languages at all. Arabic is a Semitic language from the branch of Afro-Asiatic. While Persian is Indo-Iranian language in the branch of Indo-European. While both countries have border they have managed to influence each other a lot. Persian has influenced on Arabic with words, phrases, grammar, etc and Arabic has also done the same with Persian. I want to also include Turkish too because it also had a big role in the influence. But yea, as languages they aren’t related at all but they’ve influenced each other a lot

Traditionally it is, but it's not used much anymore. Most people write Ladino in Latin script (usually either the Turkish spelling, Israeli spelling, or Spanish spelling). It also has been written in Greek, Cyrillic, and Arabic script, but most of the time you'll only see it in Latin or Hebrew script (usually either in Rashi or Solitreo style fonts)
