The books were good. They changed the first 2 movies a little, but the third, well they went off the rails. There are only 3 books and they were going to make this movie in 2 parts, like the Hunger Games, or Harry Potter. It did so bad they just dropped the second half.
@melindamercier68112 жыл бұрын
No, the books were definitely not this bad. The problem is that these YA adaptations are big moneymakers so they followed the Twilight path, got greedy, and made the last book (at the time) into two movies. I personally LOVED the last book, but it made a lot of fans upset. In my opinion, it was an incredibly unique choice and quite a risk that I feel paid off. A minority were very vocal about not liking it, so the movie makers decided to announce a complete change to the ending and ignoring the majority who actually enjoyed the story. With that, this movie performed so abysmally, that they LOST money, and decided to not do another feature film but instead make the final part a series. That made the cast upset and they bailed. Thus….no ending. This franchise made me so mad lol.

Also this franchise didn't stick to the books and that really killed it. Twilight stayed pretty close to the story, excerpt that fake out battle scene in the last movie. That didn't happen in the book and that was why everyone freaked out when we saw it in theaters and thought they were killing our OG characters. People were actually screaming at the screen they were so mad lol. It was crazy. But it was very close to the books and the cheesy stuff kept the girls coming back and dragging their boyfriend's 🤣🤣🤣

One huge reason the Twilights stayed so close to the books is that Meyer retained a huge amount of the control over adaptation to screenplay. In some ways it was extremely detrimental to the story/plot (the media is the message). However, it kept her diehard fans very happy which paid off. Never disrespect the book fans.

I feel like the twilight fakeout was a change that added value which isnt super common with book>movie adaptations.. they could still shock and surprise even the biggest fans without actually changing the story
@shadowcat10172 жыл бұрын
So there's actually only 3 books, but they chose to split the 3rd book into 2 movies, which is a big part of the problem with this movie. Book 3 was in no way longer than the first 2, so splitting it up was a straight-up cash grab. They saw the success of Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and Twilight splitting up their last books into 2 movies and thought they could do the same thing, but it failed in this case. IMO, the reason it failed is because they strayed so very, very much from the source material. They kept the essence of the plot, in that Tris's group goes outside the wall, finds the Bureau, and finds out that David has his own agenda, but almost nothing that happened in the movie happens in the book, and there's a whole bunch of stuff that happens in the book that isn't in the movie. The book is the weakest of the 3, IMO, but it does delve much more into some of what Oak was looking for, plus it goes more into what's happening in Chicago and how the non-faction system that Evelyn violently enforces is just as wrong as enforcing a faction system. People still weren't given choices in their own lives, but instead forced to live a certain way. Also to your complaint that Tris is so much less badass this movie, in the book, it's Tris who is suspicious of everything in the Bureau and Four who trusts the wrong people, which leads to one of their friends dying. They changed SO MUCH. The climax of the movie is *sort of* the same in the book, except it's the Bureau who's planning to release the memory gas in the city to reset the experiment, and Evelyn has absolutely nothing to do with it or even knows anything about it. Four and some others go back to the city to try to inoculate certain people against the gas, while Tris and Caleb stay and try to stop the Bureau from releasing the gas in the first place, and all that happens about 90% of the way into the book. What in the hell were they planning to put in movie 4?? I guess they were gonna make up more stuff that didn't happen in the books! Anyway, all that to say, between unnecessarily splitting the book into two movies, and then basically rewriting the entire story, they just shot themselves in the foot with the fans, and it wasn't a good enough movie to stand on its own without the fan base behind it. I mean, it's entertaining enough, but ultimately, forgettable.

I read the Divergent series a couple months ago. However I did not finish the last book. The books did a really good job with world-building and creating tension. I am notorious for spoiler myself when reading, mostly because when I have a hunch I want to see if I’m right. Well that’s what happened when I read Allegiant, I was a few chapters in and I was like this is not going to end well and I jumped to the back of the book and read a death scene for one of the characters and when I tell you I bawled my eyes out, I am not joking. I never cry when reading, sometimes authors will get 2 tears but this was a 5 minute meltdown. And my Dad is sitting on the couch next to me and he’s like “What the hell is wrong with you?” They definitely bombed the movie. The book was so much better.

Great reaction guys! 😊 This is a really good movie. I loved the addition of Jeff Daniels and Bill Skarsgård to the cast. And I loved that we got to see more of Octavia Spencer's character Joanna in this one. There was supposed to have been a second part to this movie. "The Divergent Series: Ascendant" was going to be the title. But because of the low box office numbers the sequel was cancelled. Then in 2018 there was plans to bring it back as a mini-series for the Starz cable channel. But some of the cast stated that it wasn't in their contracts to do the mini-series. Just the feature film. So, again it was cancelled. If any of you guys are curious about how it ends, I highly recommend reading the "Allegiant". There are a few things that I would've loved to have seen on screen in the second part of the movie. But there is also something that I was glad that we didn't get to see. In my opinion, other than the image of David looming over everyone, the way this movie ended was good. Four and Tris are happy and together. Four and his mother Evelyn were on good terms. Tris and Caleb are finally on good terms(Caleb begins calling her "Tris" instead of "Beatrice" by the end of the movie). And Peter pretty much got what he deserved getting stranded in the Fringe. There's also a book about Four/Tobias before the events of the first "Divergent" movie. It's called "Four: A Divergent Collection". A big thank you to you guys for reacting to this trilogy. Looking forward to the next reaction. 😊

SPOILERS FOR THE BOOKS BELOW Personally I liked all the books, the third one was ehhh but I definitely wouldn't call it bad... I think the reason why most people hated the third book is because Tris dies at the end. She sacrifices herself to stop the spread of the memory wipe serum. It's obviously rare for the main protagonist to die at the end of a trilogy and even rarer for that to happen in one of these young adult dystopian series. So going into watching Allegiant I had low expectations already, but it was worse than I expected... they tried way too hard to make the outside world seem really dystopian and it just ended up being cheap. Plus, I'm not sure what they would've done in the 4th movie? Most of the plot from the books was covered here, so I'm assuming they were going to make up something new for the next movie. They could've just tied everything up in this movie if they wanted to, but of course they decided to split the last book into 2 movies (which was the trend at the time: Hunger Games, Twilight, Harry Potter are some of the other franchises that did the same thing).

Really enjoy watching you guys react to these YA dystopian books-to-movies! My fav book of the big three (Hunger Games, Maze Runner, and Divergent) is definitely Divergent and with the third book (Allegiant) my fav. As for the movies, Divergent was horribly done. Loved the Hunger Game and could watch that movie a million times and never get bored. To answer some of your questions or at least provide some insights, there are three big points in book three: 1.) Four learns he’s not Divergent or any of the factions. He’s completely something else. 2.) Peter fights Four on their walk back to the gated faction for the memory erase pill. Peter tells Four that he wants the erase pill because he hates his life and hates the person he is. He wants to be a good person, but he just can’t seem to be that person and he believes that if he wipes his memory he can start over as a good person (this really hit hard because it shows he’s a normal human even though we are told/shown that he’s Dauntless…this says a lot about the experiment). 3.) Tris dies in the process of destroying the large amount of erase gas planned for the gated faction. She did it to save all human lives. She eventually came to the conclusion that all humans were important, even those genetically altered to not be fully human (genetically altered to feel only certain emotions or do certain things). However, her suicide was already foreshadowed in one of the earlier books when she said something about wanting to die. I only learned this because I read the books 4x and figured this out during the 3rd read. I hope to revisit this trilogy again…but my tbr list is out the door. This trilogy would be great if Roth could continue the story but as a prequel so that we can see the world before it became what we know it as. I would wipe my tbr list clean for this. 😊

BOOK READER - I find, in certain aspects, the third book did sort of drop off from the first two but not in the sense that you are wondering. Firstly, I'm so glad the genetically engineered children struck a cord with you, Oak. I was expecting it to but you kept your reaction under wraps so thank you for keeping notes and saying something! Secondly, all of the books dive much deeper in the genetics of it all. Tris and Four have many conversations, a meeting of minds, to discuss what has happened with the world and what the ramifications are of the continuing of genetic manipulation. Answer, I'm curious as to what your thoughts were while you were erasing your board(the first time). What was your original opinion/thought? Why did you change it? Oak, the quote I think you're looking for at the end, Potter wise is with the philosophers stone, only those who wanted to find it - find it and not use it, could get it. It does translate well to good leadership, for sure! Much love for this reaction overall, always entertaining to watch with you guys!

It has been YEARS since I read these books and I remember really enjoying the first two, but then reading the third one and thinking it ruined the story. I enjoyed the third book until the ending, but IMO the author did not make Tris's end make sense story-wise. I think the author wanted to be shocking and do something unique but didn't do the work to make it work for the characters and the story. Like I said, it's been forever since I read this series, but I specifically remember something about Tris and/or Four's decision not making sense, and the author having to break one or both of their characters for it to work. So, I already went into this movie just so that I could say that I watched it, but it was somehow worse than the book even without the end. But at the same time, I hated the last book anyway, so the fact that they didn't continue never bothered me. I kind of forget this movie exists tbh which is sad because the first book and movie were actually really good IMO.

There are two different types of memory: semantic and episodic. Semantic memory is knowledge, such as math, how to tie shoes, that the earth goes round the sun, etc. Episodic is what we think of as memory. It's your actual experiences. This memory serum probably targets mostly episodic memory so you still know how to talk and eat and whatnot.

Okay. First off the books in entirety were great. There are only three, and the movie Allegiant had intended to follow the movie trend at the time to split final books into two movies (Harry Potter, Hunger Games, The Hobbit, etc). That in itself was a bad decision. In regard to the book Allegiant, it had its quirks and annoyances and it was definitely different in story building than the earlier novels, but like make people are saying, the character development was paramount in this book and was completely missed. Another qualm I have with the movie series as a whole is that it felt like the meticulous story, character and world building that happened in the books were disrespected in movie form. In all honesty, people (mostly who read the books first) were *happy* there wasn't another movie.

So overall this book series was pretty good I loved the first two as far as adaptations go they did pretty well with the first they changed a few things and didn’t include one of my favorite characters Uriah (who I think they tried to include in the 2nd movie but I don’t remember if they ever specifically said his name) the 3rd book I actually did enjoy even though Tris dies at the end at the time when I read it I was in middle school and hated that she died but looking back now as a 21 year old that’s a brave decision to make as an author and honestly is very consistent with Tris’s character it would be out of character for tris to not sacrifice herself. But yeah the last movie is a big yikes lmao so disappointing :(

If you want a good movie about Eugenics (modifying the population's genetics to have "better genes"), Gattaca is a great movie! For your information, we currently don't modify the human genome directly (in countries that have good ethics at least). Except for some people with very severe genetic diseases, there are some test trials, but nothing on a big scale and nowhere near ready to implement. The tests available are genetic tests that are done to tell you if you have a genetic variant that causes a disease, like cystic fibrosis for example. Depending on the disease in question, tests are offered at any point during the person's life, prenatally, or when doing fecondation in vitro, embryos can be tested. All this is followed by a doctor geneticist or by a genetic counsellor. The exceptions are at-home tests offered by private companies, but those don't always work and can give false negatives, and sometimes are not correctly interpreted by the patient, since there's not always a consultation with a specialist or a counsellor available (or it costs more money).

I think one of the major factors as to why this film didn't succeed at the box office is because of it's release date. The week before it's release Disney's Zootopia came out and the week after was Warner Bros's Batman vs. Superman. This film had no shot and people always overlook that detail when they speak of it's box office total.

The books were incredible, and the reason the later movies had such a bad review were because they strayed so much from the books. If they had stayed true to them, we likely would have the final movie.

No, I personally remember LOVING the books to pieces! With all the twists and turns! I remember reading all three books before seeing the movies and even saw Insurgent twice in theatres with my friends because I loved it soo much!!! BUT! I HATE what they did in the last movie to bits!!!! I DESPISED this movie and still do!!!!!!!!! THIS HAS VERY LITTLE OF THE BOOKS PLOTS IN THEM AT ALL!!!!!!! TRIS DIES FOR ONE AT THE END OF THE LAST BOOK!!!! I remember legit being so upset and mad about it that I chucked my Kindle Fire out the window!!!! AND THEN!! THEY NEVER DID THE LAST MOVIE!!!!!!!!! They said they were going to split the last book in the trilogy into two movies, like they did with the Hunger Games (even though neither book is ACTUALLY that long!!! They're both no more than 300 pages)... BUT... the last movie was sooo bad we all assume that was why they didn't make the fourth one like they said they were going to. SOOOO....... now it's just an unfinished trilogy that had sooo much potential to be AMAZING!!

From my perspective, The writers and the directors of this storyline were thinking about connecting a way to connect the second movie and the story of the four that we did not get at the end. I don't hate this movie, I love the other films and the books are good too. I just think they made a few mistakes in this movie that made it not as successful and in the end, it was not worth doing the four film. They did not explore the new plot well and disbanded a bit from the books (if I don't remember wrong). (The actors did not want to go with it also, just cause the characters were getting bland or with not have much screen time in the way that the films were going). I love your reactions, lot of support from Barcelona🙌🤩💖

The third book does get a lot more into the genetic modifications, and the wedge between Tris and Four, because she was "pure" and he wasn't. It didn't bother her at all, and she couldn't see why it bothered him, but I don't think the third book was as good as the other two. There was a lot of class division, and condescension for the impure. Book 3 kind of spoiled the series for me, to be honest, but it was better than this half movie.

I loved these books, I sped through them in a week. I loved the first movie, I don't hate the second one but I honestly didn't like it as much as the first. The third one I was already checked out of the adaptations when I started it but I turned it off when I got to the bubble part. I still haven't finished it on my own. The third book is my least favorite as well but it's still miles better than the movie.

Thanks for the video! I loved the 3. book - and am so sad the only mad half, because the ending was SO GOOD! It blow my mind! Ind my mind the first and last book was just so good - and the first movie was okay, but the last movie is so disappointing to me. (and I only read the books after seeing the movies - so it's not that they're total crap - but the books are just 1000 times better.) I would highly recommend anyone who just thought the movies were a bit okay to read the books because it just adds so much more. Thanks again and have a blessed day!

The third book does not drop off. It was the end of the story, the fourth book was short stories I believe so it does not matter. The third book was good and unfortunately the movies just get worse and worse. No one wanted to return to make the last part because they just didn't care about it anymore.
@elazybelleorr24722 жыл бұрын
Yea they really fumbled the bag n switched up the entire story, changed the characters and what they do, their CHARACTER lol. They completely switched tris n fours actions, and also peter and calebs. I was pretty disappointed, ik its difficult to fit an entire book in a time slot without being pure disposition, all tell no show and that's one thing, but they lost the point entirely.

I love these movies, but this movie is kind of how I felt about Mockingjay Part 1. You need part 4 for it all to work/make sense so to speak. I'm so bummed that they didn't make the last one because the books are very good, and they left out a lot of really good stuff that was in the books.

I didn't even know there was supposed to be a 4th movie. I read the books and read all the reviews saying not to bother with the third book because it was "totally different" from the other two. I agree it was totally different, but that didn't make it bad. It was in a completely different place! Of course, it was different!

There was meant to be another movie but they never filmed it. From what i know it goes DIVERGENT, INSERGANT, ALLEGIANT and the final one was meant to be ASCENDANT.

Movies (2 1/2, because first half of Allegiant is still great and the concept and the way they created it was Neat of really all 3 of the movies, but not quite the supposed (not really tho) ending of Allegiant.) Were Great!... I love the scene with the like "Candor Council"... Respect how they only wanted honesty and upheld truth, and when they gave people chances to confess, they still went hard with how just because they confessed doesn't mean they weren't immoral in their beliefs. Honestly, that guy (makai pheifer..?) murdered so many people under his notion, and he still wasn't sorry and would still hold those beliefs going forward. 🤷♀️ There's a point where just because you confess to an awful crime doesn't mean that crime's gonna be overlooked and it's not justified. So RESPECT, that scene was...🫡 Such cool creative concept in these films. The way it remained unfinished, tho, was like, idk when... You are into a good movie already halfway in it, and someone turns off the movie or changes the channel (You Know... That type of feeling, pisses me off...) I wish they'd pick it back up (but not ruin what the first, like 2 were workin' with, but pick it up and give us the satisfying conclusion to the series we NEED 😩👏

Allegiant was a box office bomb, which killed the change of the 2nd movie being made and finishing the story. When they planned to move it to TV, the actress who plays Tris (Shailene Woodley) balked and said she refused to do a TV series. That killed it for good. Even when it was broached to make the 2nd movie after all, Shailene said she wouldn't return. Guess she found out her character dies in the 2nd half of the book...

As a book reader, even with all the changes I still love 2nd movie, not as much as first but still love it, but the third one was just plainly bad movie, the plot was messy, the characters arc was awfully written, there's not a single character I could care about, even with the third book wasn't as good as previous ones, it still waaaay better than the movie. I think one of the dumbest thing they decided for this movie was split the last book into two, considering it is the shortest one of the trilogy, I just don't understand how come they decided to remove half of insurgent that has rich storylines but also split allegiant where it lacked story. Even back than the fans were confused where they would cut the story, and the thing is considering the last one was going to be called ascendant, and a lot of Natalie's backstories were cut, pretty much we knew the base for the the 4th one, but also it's kinda dumb because it lessen tris story in this movie and made her character not as engaging as the first two. It also removed tris emotional journey from this movie that I loved from the first two, and tris was also way smarter in the third book than the movie one where she was just following David or other characters. I could also say the same way with other characters arc, Tina's Peter's Caleb's even Matthew's and Nita's, also caleb relationship with tris was explored better in the book. there are also so many supporting characters that are fan-favorites that were cut from the movies which is fine but also a little bit frustrating. And also so you guys noticed how four was much more prominent in this movie, that was because the book used two pov aka add four's pov into the mix. And 4th book is also not continuation but short story collection from four, two was written before the writer decided to make the book with tris' pov, so it has two scenes from the book by four's pov, adding another story of what he did during divergent book and a prequel story about what happened during his transfer to dauntless and what happened with him and his father.

I remember when this movie came out, there were talks to make a television movie for the last film. The actors said they didn't sign on for TV. Boom your abrupt ending. They left too much on the table and the pandemic would have been a great time to finish the story. But so far that's it.

I really liked this video and it mirrored a lot of how I felt having just watched the series for myself for the first time over the last couple weeks. But I do wanna say: Answer, why did you edit your answer? Mason shared his opinion and you edited yours. Why? I'm interested in *your* opinion, not your opinion as seen through the filter of other people's opinions. What was your original score pre-edit? Also, Oak, myself and my partner are huge fans of yours!
