What a great trip. This route is epic, connecting coastal area and mountainous area. That moment you preparing the food supplies reminds me about I also doing the same, but the difference is I'm using Long Distance Passenger ship, meanwhile this is Long Distance Train. They changed locomotive because operational range limitations (CMIIW). Tibetan plateau is amazing, epic, and mind-blowing. Feels unreal watching it.

I was on a similar trip from Chengdu to Lhasa in April 2008. The trip took app 45 hours. We didn't have to change train / cars, but several times we got new locomotives, especially for the last part across the Qinghai plateau. Outside Lhasa we went to a lake at 5500 m altitute, but without needing additional O2. Very nice trip and also nice to watch your video. Best regards from Denmark

In fact, there are two main reasons for changing locomotives in China: different locomotives to suit different lines, and the need to use the appropriate locomotive when trains enter different lines. Take two examples: for example, if a train enters a non-electrified railroad from an electrified railroad, it is necessary to replace the electric locomotive with an internal combustion locomotive. Secondly, China Railway Group divides the national railway lines into different traction sections, each of which has a different length. At the end of the traction section of the railroad branch to which a locomotive belongs, although the train has not yet reached the end, the locomotive will be replaced for the next section. The fundamental purpose is to ensure the safe operation of the locomotive as well as the rest of the driver. Each group of locomotives has its own fixed allotted section which is responsible for the management and maintenance of the locomotives. (For example, the South Bureau of the South Section indicates that the locomotive is assigned to the Nanchang Locomotive Section of Nanchang Railway Bureau), and the driver of this section is also responsible for driving this group of locomotives. Therefore, for the convenience of management and operation, corresponding locomotive crossings are assigned for general locomotives. But this problem does not exist in China's high-speed railroad network. The trains belonging to the Northern Railway Bureau can go directly to the South without changing trains

Obrigado pelo vídeo. Gostei do nascer do sol. Imagino que suas férias começaram bem. Viajar é muito bom, ainda mais sem pressa d chegar. Saudações brasileiras, desde Feira de Santana na Bahia.
Thanks for a great touring train video, lovely to see central Asia, and from a Chinese viewpoint. Your question about locomotive changes... Usually each loco has a base (shed) and will be arranged to return to that shed at regular intervals (the same goes for the crew, but shorter intervals due to human resources & safety regulations). In this case for example the Wuhan loco will take the train forward, leaving the Guanzhou loco to take another trainset back home. Or it may be that Wuhan provides both locos. The idea is that every loco gets an assignment to every line that it can cover, so that all locos get an equal amount of mileage in the same service interval. Hope that makes sense!

To answer your question about why they change locos at WUHAN. there are several reasons why a loco change is neccassary. 1 the elevation of the line means less oxygen available for running. locos need oxygen or the diesel engine wont work. if a diesel has been deliberately designed to run on a low oxygen atmospehere it needs to be attached to the train just before it goes into that environment. A loco tuned to operate within a richer atmosphere needs to run in that atmosphere or it wont burn up the hydrocarbons efficiently. thereby not enough power and produces soot. the trains running over that line are heavy and need 6000 HP to climb to the plateau. they need that power. so have to be tuned to use less oxygen in combustion. and yes, diesels do combust. maybe not the same way as petrol engines to. but they still combust and need oxygen. the other reasons may be to do with running the special atmosphere in the train overal. not just the coaches need it. so does the driver. plus various other technical issues. as China is pretty closed to giving out technical info. i cant find much about them at all
