Curiosity is one thing but what I don’t like is that people will forget their manners In the presence of people who look different. So I think you giving advice to people about not reaching out to touch black hair is a good thing because I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t simply stick their fingers into the hair of someone who is similar to them even if it was a style they had never seen before. Most people would ask first.

My first year in Japan, I was in a mall going up an escalator when I heard some people laughing. I look up, and it was a group of young people (late teens/ early-20s, maybe?) ahead of me looking directly at me and laughing... HARD. I was used to people staring, but laughing at me? Never. I realised later that it was the first time I'd worn my hair out. So, I crafted an experiment, and sure enough: any time I wore my hair out, there was a dramatic spike in the intensity of the stares, the pointing, the comments, and a laughter that I never got otherwise. I've been natural for over 20 years, and I LIVE for wearing my hair out. My hair is BIG. It's long (BSL) and beautiful, and I love how voluminous it is. But here in Japan, I keep it in plaits or twists (sans extensions). The constant and unending staring from Japanese people every day is one thing, but the added pointing and laughter when I wear my hair out is another. So, I feel you. Serious respect to everyone who wears their fro out regularly.

​@@anqearlivv That's because they are from an insular, mono-ethnic society and just choose to be dumbfounded in each generation. This is the same society that is a proponent of having white skin over dark. Even the ones that aren't ignorant tend to think straighter hair is the norm over type 4 hair. In their minds, standing out and being different from the "norm" is not good, although you have some of them that like to appropriate our hairstyles, such as kinky twists and braids. Psychological bullying is the norm here (Japan), and they are rather "white yielding" when it comes to dealing with foreigners. Just look at how many of them run after white men, yet hold their own men to a higher standard. Being a foreigner just gives them enough ammunition to start talking sh*t, especially if you are the only one in the given situation.

I'm in India and I'm really glad that a lot of my friends(and strangers) ask for permission to touch. I have met a few people that just touched it and made fun of it but I'm glad that majority of people do ask for permission and even if I say no, they respect my answer. Im Black American. Growing up in an area that had an almost non existent black population, I relate to a lot of these experiences. It took a lot of self love and reflection to learn to love my hair. Happy to say that I’ve natural now for 4 years and I’m never going back!

Our hair is so incredibly beautiful. The rarest of all the races. The only hair type to grow toward the sun. I have been laughed at when at a salon and have even had my hair compared to a clown wig. There was even a woman who picked her nose and then tried to touch my hair, of course without asking. People doing this sh*t would have rightfully gotten their asses kicked elsewhere. Foreign country or not, don't let people disrespect you. From a Congolese, actually things have changed a lot, people won’t be asking why you didn’t do your hair, they will just look at you and try to do the same thing the next day, some may come at you to say that it looks good 👍🏾 The Afro style has gained so much popularity with in older and younger generations and I think that we should always be proud of our natural hair.

I guess it has changed from her time My parents and everyone else wore their Afros in highschool (80s) and before. When I was born (USA ) my mom would always tell me how beautiful my Afro was randomly, and my aunts would feel my Afro and tell me how beautiful it was. Haha little me was like ok? But my grandma did suggest a relaxer,which I did get at age 6-7.

When I walked around Sapporo with my fro for the first time, no one seemed to notice. When I went to my usual bar, everyone acted like nothing. Finally, one of the employees said I had a fashionable hat. When I told them it was my hair, they were so shocked at first, but ended up loving it. They said I should wear my hair out more, but told them due to the snow and cold, it was better to have box braids.

I think it's our responsibility as African women to display our hair to others so the ignorance can be eradicated. If we keep hiding it they will never know and continue to act without manners towards us. They are usually just curious. No need to take it personal. I've been in Japan for roughly 7 months and I seldom wear my natural hair out. On only one occasion I wore my hair in a high bun and I had a stray strand dangling and a student came up and smoothed it down and then in surprise commented on how soft my hair was, then a crowd of teenage girls were making quick steps in our direction to also try and cop a feel, I said thank you and politely excused myself and headed to the staff room ahead of the touch session. The following day I was back to wig life. I don't want to be touched, it's just something I don't like, from Japanese people and from any other race, even my own. My students are excited everytime I wear a new wig to school. I have afro textured wigs which I prefer and they say it's cute however when I wear straight wigs, everyone is overly excited and give many nice compliments, so they definitely have a preference. This comment got super long super fast... Oops😳

I recently went to Dotombori Namba and I was approached by this but wearing a really dirty Afro and he pointed at himself and pointed back at me and I yelled “ isho janai “ he put his tail between his legs and went off with his friend! All in all I have zero issues with old people or kids being curious about my hair but having all this young people with their phones stuck to their face trying to act as if they don’t know anything! To me it’s disrespectful! I live it when kids touch my hair because they are expanding their knowledge and it’s a great opportunity for me to teach them !

I am not black but I have a bit of curly hair and I got asked in japan by a Japanese acquaintance of mine if it was real and she proceeded to touch it as well, it was weird lol it happened only in Japan and it was still someone I knew but it made me feel uncomfortable so I cant even begin to imagine what its like if it happens a lot to you / if done by strangers :/ yikes moment. I've been living in Japan for 7 months and I live in the country side area. So I understand this completely however I mostly put my hair in one. So it would have my big puff in the back and I can feel people watching me and taking photos. However honestly my trick to survive everything is having this main character energy thinking lol. And after awhile everything just fades out and it doesn't bother me how people perceive it. Because I love my hair, and grateful for it and yes I am different so I accept it. Taking care of your hair here is crazy, I have my family ship me products because I can't get anything here lol. And my braiding skills aren't the best , so accepting my hair and just wearing it helps me so much.

This is awful. I feel you, but with less intensity. I'm white, but I have curly hair. I'm a 3c. Even in my own country people touched my hair without permission all the time. I also like to touch curly hair, but I always ask for permission bcs i know how it feels to have your hair constantly touched without consent. I hated my hair for years, only now have i started liking it. It used to annoy me when people wished they had curly hair, bcs I was made fun of when my hair had a frizzy day or had the hairdressers say nasty things throughout entire appointments. As an adult it's different bcs I am a guy, people dont touch you randomly anymore and they don't expect you to have perfect hair always like they do with women.

I really needed this video. I just moved to South Korea a month ago, and my hair is natural. Every time I wear space buns, a style that’s fairly normal in the US. I get SO many more stares. Usually young men, college age, point and laugh. I’ve never had this reaction to this particular style before so I feel so weird. It’s nice to know I’m not alone in this experience.

Japan is a lot different than many places because the population is predominantly Japanese. A lot of Japanese people have never been exposed to other races and cultures from every nation. This is mostly curiosity and Awe. To make the decision to live in a country such as Japan, it is very expectant to experience looks that could make one feel not to good. Just remember there’s nothing wrong with you, you’re in a foreign country and should expect this.

I like that you brought up perceptions of Afro hair in black spaces too like your home country! It reminds me of my family's home country (Jamaica), a lot of people there think there's some big reason I'm natural and wear my afro out regularly instead of straightening it or wearing wigs.

Some afros are so huge they would attract stares even in the USA. The smaller, rounder and smooth afros don't get as much attention. They also probably get more compliments.
