I think unfinished handle is due to the personalization. Pretty much every Korean bow handle will be modified to the individuals hand after the purchase. We will cut, sand, and sometimes put on extra layers of tennis grip over the handle to make it as personal as possible. Beginners will have thicker handles, and it will get leaner as your skill progresses most of the times.

It's Korean composite bow called Gak-Gung which means 'Horn Bow'. It's because slice very thin horn is put in between wooden material. They glued together by bull's cartilage glue that is very vulnerable to humid air condition than anyother bow kinds so they had to keep dry, but in summer season it is hard. The first king of Jo-sen Dynasty, Lee seong-gye, when he throw up Goryeo kingdom write the letter of returning army to Capital city that was "Its consecutive heavy rainy days so bow glue has weekened we can't fight and returning army." For those who may be interested: The manufacturing of Korean bows were state secret during the Joseon Dynasty. The Chinese constantly wanted to know how the bows were made; they constantly sent spies to find out. Traditionally, Korean bows were laminated bows with various materials including bull's horns. Yeah, you will be surprised how advanced the Korean bows are. They are NOT just made with dried wood. A good bow will take over a year to make it. The making of the bows were controlled and overlooked by the government ministries. Supposedly, just like the Turkish recurve bows, Korean bows are farther shooting and highly penetrating but are smaller than any other bows. Thus, soldiers on horseback can carry and shoot it with ease. Historically, the Koreans, unlike the Japanese, preferred the bow in warfare. You don't want to mess with the Koreans with bows in warfare. Highly recommend the Korean movie "War of Arrows". Google it. I think Netflix had it on their offerings. It's an excellent movie. You will like it.

As far as I'm aware, Korean bows did little to stop concentrated, well-applied firearms and tactics for such. If anything, naval power and potent alliances saved Korea. The Japanese, it has to be said, repeatedly outfought Korean land troops in possession of these bows. It might be a better bow, but it sure isn't the reason Korea still exists.

A traditional Korean bow is one of extremely powerful and long range bows in the world. Its max range is 250~300 meters. It needs potent power even to pull a string and takes a long time to do it successfully for the beginners. From long ago It's been said in the Far East Asia that Korea is a land of bows, China is a land of spears and Japan is a land of swords.
@niclas9990
@niclas9990 3 жыл бұрын
That's interesting because historical records suggest English longbows generally reached a maximum of 300~350 meters, with 200 being a minimum acceptable range. That was probably due to constant practice by archers from a young age, as the lack of recurve didn't really force. Still, Korean and other recurve bows must be more accessible and powerful, if finicky due to problems with moisture and difficult to mass produce quickly.

Hello! That is a nice Korean bow. As for the bow handle, it should be wrapped with a leather which they call joompi/jumpi (I don't know the Korean alphabet translation of that sorry). When you buy a KTB, there should be a joompi included for you to wrap it to your bow handle. When I bought my KTB, I got the bow itself, bow bag, bow sock, 2 pcs of string and 2pcs joompi. Too bad they did not include the wrap with you. And yes, it is expensive. There are other KTB shops that sell YMG for 300 USD. I hope they ship their products through private shipping companies to justify the price.

Unlike English bows and Japanese bows, Korean bows make one bows by combining water buffalo horns, tendons, and bamboo birch trees. Of course, it takes a lot of effort and time to make the bow more expensive. The Korean bow has various pulling forces ranging from 40 to 55 pounds, but most beginners of the use of "45 pounds" bows at a speed of 50~55 m/s (170 fps). I hope this information helps. :)

Because the arrows were significantly shorter, it said that one could fire the arrow further and with more speed. And because the arrows were little, enemies had a hard time detecting the archers, making these the ultimate stealth arrow back in the day.

Wonderful!! Even though I'm a Korean, I've shot just several times in my life.. As you know, my ancestors are physically not a big or strong persons in comparison with western persons, but the bow itself is very strong because it is made to combine several different kinds of woods and pieces of horn of water cows together.(a kind of composite material..,I'm not sure whether yours are treal treditional one or modern one) So, when we pull the string, we normally use two arms together, one push, the other pull at the same time(dual action). By doing so, you can pull the string more easily.. The korean bows can be used as a direct aim shooting weapon, but also widely be used as a indirect high angle launcher on both real battle field or hunting yards, so, depends on the strength of the bow, shoot the arrow over 300 meters.(needs alot of practice to aim properly....) And, with thumb ring, arm protector is required for safe shooting, when releasing the string, the string hits inside of your arm... Thanks and hope Good Luck with you!!

Very informative and illuminating, Armin. Thanks for the video. I actually have that YMG at 100#. The master was nice enough to custom make one for me. Unfortunately, like yourself, I'm still working hard towards full draw. I really wonder how you manage such beautiful khatra even at a poundage beyond your current strength.

Hi Armin, I have this bow with 50" lenght and rated at 60 pounds at 31" ! That should give it a poundage of around 52 Pounds at 28" Yes, it is a wonderful bow !! The longer 50" version is probably even smoother to draw ( only for us Europeans, Koreans always shoot the short versions ! ) Compared to my other bows, mine seems to have a heavier poundage than advertised ( like yours ) But again, YMG bows are near the top end of the market when it comes to Korean bows, for sure !!

For now you are the only non-Korean archer who uses ggakji 깍지 (that auxiliary ring when you draw the bow). I have been learning bow here in Korea. I am using 50pound 현무궁(Hyun Mu Gung) and Elders make sure to draw my bow at full draw. So I suggest you to do the same! With 65! You said you can’t for now but you will be able to later!

I've been waiting for this review for awhile. This was a great shooting bow but I think it has serious stacking issues past 30", even with the 50" version that was claimed to work for my original 34" draw. I even reduced my draw to 32" but I thought the stacking was not good for my form. The first bow I received, which I didn't have for long enough to do a full draw curve was 50#/31" & 94#/34." The last bow I had that I had enough time to do a full draw curve had these results. Basically if you are shooting 31" on the 50" version I think this bow will work for you but if you have a longer draw then I would stay away from this one. 28" = 41.3 29" = 44 30" = 47.3 31" = 50.9 32" = 55.2 33" = 61 34" = 69.4

The bow you are introducing is for practice. This is an introductory bow used before using the traditional Korean bow. Place a target at a distance of 145 meters, shoot 5 shots, and repeat 5 times to cover the match. The effective range is about 250 meters and is for long distances. This is a very dangerous sport, so you must follow the safety rules.

I agree with JUSTICE. It is not real Korean traditional bow. There are no reinforced materials on bow center and grip and Korean traditional bow is composite materials weapon. Cow horn and chestnut wood or mulberry wood are on bamboo body for reinforcement such as strengthen and elastic power. Depends on archers' skill, usual effective range is 150~ 200 meters.
