2:36 What I love about Scoot is his subtlety and how smart his humor is. Having replayed Silent Hill 1-4 recently, I agree with Adum. I very much appreciate what Silent Hill was trying to do with presentation and story, in spite of the technical limitations. It's stuff video games were just NOT doing back then. But as far as the actual game itself goes, the first Silent Hill is just fine. Most of the fun of replaying it is noticing the seeds of what the developers would do in the sequels. So thank you very much for the retrospective, can't wait to see Silent Hill 2!

Fun fact: Cybil Bennet (the cop) was possibly inspired by Laurie Bembenek, a killer cop who was the subject of a media circus at the time. Given that the devs intended the players to question the actions of the characters beyond the surface level, I guess they tried to imply that Cybil wasn't fully sane when she was giving the gun to Harry.

Ah printout walkthroughs. That's how I beat Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee for the first time. I printed out a walkthrough for the entire game (100% completion), then my sister and I sat down on the couch and went through the entire game, them reading the walkthrough out loud and me following directions in the game.

The whole "Silent Hill is based off of Pennsylvania" thing is a fact that got twisted in retellings. The director of the movie said he based specifically the movie version of Silent Hill off of that one town with the coal fire, but the town in the game has absolutely no connection to it.

I appreciate Adum's insights throughout the playthrough regarding the Silent Hill Series, it's like I'm listening to the developer commentary in HL2 & L4D. It's a shame the franchise is in such a rut nowadays. Bloober of all companies is handling the Remake for Silent Hill 2. These are the same guys that made that awful The Medium Game. Not really getting my hopes up for this one, so I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I know Its too late, but next time you play this or silent hill 2/3 try sneaking past the enemies by walking and turning off your flash light. You can sneak through most of these classrooms and hallways without having to fight at all. You basically NEED to do this to get past the school on hard mode without the newgame+ bullet adjust

I went to Silent Hill as a kid and I didn't even know it apparently its based off this place "Centralia" we visited back in the early 2000s, I was maybe 12, the main roads to the town are torn up from smoke billowing out, so we walked a bit to get there, it had burning pits, not dissimilar to an ant lion hole, but with perpetual flames shooting out, and a constant haze of smoke. A coal fire has been burning underneath the town for a long time now and when we visited like 7 people lived there. It wasn't until much later in life that I looked back and realized how nightmarish of a situation I was actually in.

The Silent Hill movie used Centralia as inspiration, the game didn't. The creators weren't aware of it, and they say it's just snow in the game, not ash.

Creepy old people in the misty distance, not talking, the one store turned off its lights when they saw us, the literal blocks in the road where you can't go any further. The pits of fire, it was very similar to a game, minus the demonic nurses. I remember my dad even had his pistol on him, I don't care if it wasn't the game, it was as close to a horror game irl reminiscent of silent Hill as one could get as a child in 2004 lol Good to know, though. I hate spreading misinformation.

One of my favorite game series of all time, and the first one is an absolute classic. I remember how people called it a Resident Evil ripoff back when it came out. Me being a stupid kid and RE fangirl, I was one of them without even having played it. When I finally did play it I got so scared I turned it off after Harry lost consciousness lol. Didn't touch it again until I was 18. Still scared the shit out of me then.
