I have played The Last Of Us Part 1 at least a dozen times, & I can say that this show is the best videogame adaptation ever! It does what any good adaptation should do; be mostly loyal to the original source material, but change just enough so there's something new yet still enjoyable to watch. For example, about 80% of what we see in the 1st 3 episodes is from the 1st few levels of the game, but the remaining 20% is things like expanded backstory & more development for certain characters we didn't originally get. Here's hoping Season 2 is as good & faithful when they adapt Part 2.

Hey Adam, to help you a little with the pronunciation (dunno if you are gonna read this message), it's Gustavo "Santaolaja" (think of the "j" as in "jaws" or "jealous"); he is Argentinian, we tend to pronounce the "ll" or double l's as "j" (different pronuciation than "standard" Spanish)

It's why I go back to his Synechdoche New York videos so much; he's all shaped up to be this dude who trashes movies relentlessly, and sometimes it's nice to remember he does that because movies are usually such incredible pieces of shit. My biggest complaint about the show is that I think it should have been longer, 12 episodes would have fit the story better in my opinion, with the 9 we got it feels like the story gets too compact at the end and the show never really show the moment when Joel really starts to care for Ellie, it just happens out of the blue.

Agree 100% Also iirc it was one of the thing that people criticized about episode 3 : the show is already kinda short and you're waisting time with side characters. I disagree as I loved the episode but I get it. Although the homophobia of some was blatant, let's not kid ourselves. And btw, I ended up disliking the show overall, mostly because of the lack of chemistry between Joel and Ellie (I never bought Ramsey as Ellie), so I guess this little side step with Nick Offerman, whom I adore, was perfect for me.

I found that Tess and Joel arriving to find that Robert was already dead - in the first episode kinda robbed Tess of a bit of ruthlessness - how she shot Robert in the face with no hesitation or emotion in the game...But in the Movie she just tells Ellie "we're bad people" kinda didn't feel like it hit in the same way - I didn't buy it as much. I dunno if you felt the same way?

Ditto, I wish they had retained more of Tess’ hardhearted violent side. It really made her and Joel feel like two of a kind. And seeing her go from no bullshit ruthlessness to desperately seeking a little redemption was a really tragic and compelling way to set Joel and Ellie on their journey. I still liked the show’s version but it didn’t carry the same weight regarding Tess’ guilt and regret about who she was in life.
@Stiasteny

100% agree. She didn’t seem as tough and it felt like she had to make up for it by swearing twice as much 😕 (Spoiler) It felt so out of character when Tess stood still and got ‘infected’ by that super slow moving infected. I imagined her to have screamed on the top of her lungs, and that she’d stayed screaming to help Joel and Ellie as long as possible to make sure they were safe. Or at least to struggle when one infected came up to her. It made the infected seem less scary.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but Tess in the show was kinda awful for me. The way she was written to be way, way, way more vulnerable than her video game self who was already vulnerable in ways but still such a badass and capable character. The actress with her fake raspy voice who would deliver some of her lines while slipping back to her Australian accent which was comical. Whatever the hell they decided to do with her in those last moments with the infected which was just odd as all hell. The show kinda just butchered Tess for me, who was one of my favorite characters from the game despite her relatively short screentime. Hell, she's one of my all time favorite female characters in any game ever.

The problem with the show and the second game is that the two writers who used to contribute the most to ND's narrative driven games, weren't with ND anymore. Neil Cuckman took over and got rid of them. If you read into what his ideas for the first game were, and how the other two writers had to keep the idiot on a leash you quickly realise, Neil Drukman didn't actually make TLOU.

Left Behind in the game had context behind it, at least. You were playing Ellie's flashbacks of her initial infection, but also her in the between of Joel falling off the horse and suddenly being in the suburb. There was a duality to her trying to save Joel, a person she loved, and her thinking back to the last person she loved, although a bit differently, and the fact that she failed to protect them. In the show, we didn't really get that dynamic.

Honestly, my biggest criticism of episode 3 has more to do with the fact that it ultimately didn't add much to the overall plot except *some* characterization. I think that was the issue with some later episodes, where some of the stuff we had earlier didn't amount to much of anything. Like, thematically, Bill's guardedness and his opening up to live was something that could be mirrored to Joel's character arc, but the series goes in a different direction to explore the "dark side" of love. I think the issue I had is that there are some great scenes that are well shot and acted, but the show seems to have a balancing issue with its plot and its characterization. Ellie's flashback episode gave us a fair bit of context as to who she is, but I feel it could have been shortened and allowed for either development of other aspects of the world or story. Same for this episode. Though to be fair, I'm not sure how I would do it differently as I also tend to struggle with characterization and plot progression at times.

it plays into the theme of “it’s always worth it to keep goin” and the importance of human connections and relations, also inspire and show the younger joe a new way to be born again and live etc the series doesn’t only explore dark sides of love, a great story is multifaceted and nuanced. the point of last of us even as a game isn’t to get through the plot as quickly as possible. ellie’s flashback cleared the behaviours from before and it didn’t seem long at all, i do not see any scenes which could be cut to shorten it but perhaps that’s on me. i am actually curious as to which “other aspects of the story” would you have favoured you can look up on youtube as to why episode 3 progresses the last of us very much so, i remember watching them back when i wasn’t sure if i should watch the show in general (huge and old fan of the game) and those analyses swayed me.
@dfmrcv862
@dfmrcv862 Жыл бұрын
@@theaizere Again, it's not that these episodes aren't well shot or acted, just... they kinda add very little or nothing at all to the main plot. Maybe thematically they do to an extent, but the overall picture is lessened when you sit down to discuss the actual story. For example, I think a very interesting bit can be seen in Ellie's interactions with Riley. Riley sees the remnant of the US government as "fascists" that starve the people and Ellie points out that the Fireflies aren't really helping anyone because they blow food supplies up. Riley kinda stops the conversation right there by expressing annoyance with Ellie, and instead, they go on into the mall to goof around. Good for characterization, sure, but... instead of adding to the grayness of things, most of the Left Behind episode is about Riley and Ellie goofing around. It's not *bad* but what does it add to the plot? At first I thought this was set up to show how gray things are in the world so when Joel kills the Fireflies later on there's a heavier weight to it, but... no. As you said, it shows us Ellie's behavior and attitude and how she discovered she was immune, but very little else comes from it. Did we need the entirety of the episode dedicated to that while we could've set up the cannibals a bit better? Did we need the chat about how Riley sees FEDRA as fascists when that never comes up again since neither FEDRA nor the motivations of the fireflies are brought up after this? A lot of this kind of applies to episode 3, though at least that one works more for theme, but it adds very little. Same for some of the flashbacks. Basically, it's story details that go nowhere. Did we need the opening scene of episode 2 to be where the virus was discovered? It didn't really add anything to the plot except by cementing that a vaccine is impossible, but then the show acts as if the Fireflies could still make a vaccine without adding an explanation as to how. Imagine if we cut some of the flashback in episode 3 and instead focused on how the Fireflies were trying to make a vaccine, what did they discover that convinced them they could. Then the flashback in episode 2 at least adds something as suddenly the fireflies have done what scientists in 2003 with all their logistics and tech could not. But we don't get that and all that flashback does to the main plot is hang the idea in front of you that a vaccine is impossible. Presumably this was not the intention as in interviews Druckman stated that this episode *was* supposed to be about the darker side to love, as Joel would've slaughtered the Fireflies to save Ellie regardless of a vaccine or not, but at the same time the show almost implies Joel is even more correct here than in the game because with what we have seen the idea that a vaccine is impossible and that the Fireflies may be worse is all but established and nothing was done to push against it. Ask yourself what good thing does the show mention the fireflies are doing? They're hiring kids to carry out bombings, Ellie notes they purposefully blew up food storage facilities to try and push for revolution all while FEDRA, for all its faults, has maintained some level of order and when we do see an uprising in the show overthrow FEDRA the results are even worse. Basically, we get set up for elements of the show that didn't go anywhere, and as I said, that's my biggest criticism of the show. Which sucks, because The Last of Us has some pretty bad world building in the games that could use some expanding on, and the show looked like it would do that... but it kinda gave up, I guess?

I think that show had a strong start, but as it went, I would catch myself often comparing it to the game (which simply did most of the things better). There are aspects to the show that I feel the game did much better, spoiler for episode 8 When Ellie kills David and runs into Joel after walking away. I felt it was more impactful in the game where Joel finds Ellie chopping up David and stops her, and tries to calm her down Ellie snaps out of it, realizes what she had done, then hugs Joel felt much more impactful in the game plus the music really packed more of a punch.

I think for the scene in the burning building, to make it more tense and less rushed they could have filled the room up with smoke and have Ellie crawl around trying to escape David through the thick black blaze and have everything else play out the same but have some tense moments where Ellie could maybe have to hold in a cough from the smoke. could have fixed both the problems with one cool unique design element.

My only beef with the show was how they treated guns. Joel is a Latino dad, with a biracial daughter, in TEXAS! There is no way in hell such a man wouldn't own a gun. Joel isn't a "gun nut" but he did have a revolver for just in case situations in the game and this was cut out of the tv-show but, he still somehow ends up with the same revolver off-screen. Yet, they felt the need to show off Ellie's knife at least once an episode? Constantly reminding us of how important it is to her, to the point that the thing was involved in her birth. There was also that bizarre bit where Joel ditches the M-4 because he doubted they'd be able to find ammo for it, which is stupid because then why is FEDRA using them!? Roughly 1 in 20 Americans currently own AR-15s (which use the same ammo) and it's literally one of the most common firearms you can find in the US. With so many people dying so quickly during the initial outbreak, there'd be plenty of them and plenty of ammo. They are also pretty easy to repair, even with just basic tool knowledge. There was no reason for Joel to ditch it. And let's not forget he was on his way to Bill and Frank's place, so he knows there'd be tons of ammunition available for it! It makes no sense! And let's not forget Bill running outside in shorts with a bolt action when he most likely had fully automatic weapons. He was a prepper and there was no ATF or NFA around, so why wouldn't he be using something better suited to dealing with numerous shooters? Not to mention him not having a sniper's nest or shooting from the roof or a window of his two story house? Nope, he's engaging multiple shooters while making himself as visible as humanely possible. All he had to do was wake Frank up and tell him to hunker down in the basement, while he took potshots at the guys (less than half a dozen of them, easy if Bill is a decent marksman). And Joel not getting hit once during the final shootout was off-putting as well, even if I do enjoy the scene from a narrative/music standpoint. Joel is a badass but one man taking on over a dozen armed and trained soldiers is just stretching disbelief if you're going for realism. Joel's advantage was his experience and stealth, so you could have gotten the same results with him stalking the soldiers through the building, with some occasional shooting. It was just so weird with the way the show treated firearms and shooting, it took me out of it at times. EDIT: And the more I thought about it, the more I realized that only bad guys carry AR-15's or M-4's in the show. To such a degree that it actually jives with the narrative of the story (for the show). Joel is a "bad guy" because he uses one in the first two episodes and in the last one. Joel's positive moments are all when he doesn't have one. It's like when he has one, he turns into a monster and so do the other characters.

The show was incredibly average. As a stand alone production it was ok, but only ok. As an adaptation it's pretty bad, there is no tension at all, and that means there's very little real growth. The acting was mostly really good, but the characters were changed so much that it makes it difficult to judge whether or not Pedro is a good Joel. He did a great job as show Joel but he didn't have the menace, anger or depth that game Joel had at all. BUT game Joel might not of worked with this specific story. Just not into it

I think episode 3 was really good. Incredible even. I just think having it as a oneshot made more sense. I'm not entirely convinced it was necessary for Joel's story, at least not the whole episode. I think a lot of the game boiled down to a character drama about Joel and dedicating so much time to something else, even though I got it (Bill and Frank's story is Joel and Ellie's in a lot of ways), felt like a lot for a nine episode season.

Imagine having the last episode in the hospital as one long continuous take like the video game. Like Joel is going floor to floor and the he patches himself up or takes an enemies weapon but it has no ammo and he needs ammo, or have fun with the lighting of him hiding in the darkness and emerging from it, shiv someone. I feel like cinematically the last episode was a missed opportunity. Also they didn’t have the emotional chase of Joel holding Ellie and making a dash to the elevator. The first half of the show took its time then they just rushed to the finish line for the ending. Idk. Episode 3 hands down was my favorite only because it was so disconnected from the source material. Also they should have credited Bruce Straley.

I agree, and to be honest, I'd have preferred it if it were its own TV Special. As in, I feel like it wasn't appropriate for TLoU. While Adam makes a good point that it shows people can still be happy in the apocalypse, I think that the original story from the game between Frank & Bill fit the universe better. I won't provide spoilers, but it sends the opposite message of what Episode 3 provided, and I think that was integral to the overall story of what TLoU 1 was telling and ties in really well with Joel's decision at the end of the game. The gist is that it was a reflection, and I personally preferred that. So I didn't think it fit with the end of Season 1 either since the general format was the same in terms of events. Oh well, still great television either way.

The problem of episode 3 for me isn't that the characters are gay; it is that it's obvious that they completely changed these characters in particular BECAUSE they are gay and thus didn't want to portray them in a bad light. Why replace the original story of a love story that over they years fall apart due to the opposite nature of the characters exacerbated by the extreme conditions they are living in? Bill overzealous cautious nature taken to extreme suffocating the spirit of Frank to the point they act like they hate each other at the tragic end? Why replace all that with the cliche "I am gonna kill myself because I can't fathom to imagine my life without you" saccharine version? Because they are gay and thus can't be portrayed in a bad light in current media. Why not treat gay people like regular people instead of this kids gloves patronizing treatment? THIS is the kind of stiff that drives me nuts. Besides original Bill had some great moments with Ellie that contracted beautifully both of their characters. They had all to be sacrificed on the altar of not-be-offensive -towards-these-particular-grouo-of-people.

One reviewer said something that sums up the problem: The problem isn't diversity, it's representation. When a character is made to be representative of a trait they're predominantly presenting, they're not allowed to be a character. They have to represent that trait and a group of people, and so can't have intentional flaws. And yet, at the end of the day, they still buried their gays. So like many examples of representation over diversity, it's a reflection on the author's feelings more than the feelings of the represented group.

I HAD THE EXACT SAME THOUGHT ABOUT THAT SCENE THANK YOU Fully agree, 8/10, very good but not as good as the game (though I am biased, it's one of my favorite games of all time as well). And yeah, as a big fan of Part II I also feel like it in particular HAS to be a game, that it just won't work as well as a show. The way it used the inherent limited perspective of a video game was so masterful (even more than the first game's Winter section) and it just... won't translate. I think it's such a different experience being forced to BECOME a character you hate compared to just being forced to watch them. And there's no way the Ellie/Abby fights will hit as hard. Those hit because you feel like you're fighting yourself, and you don't want to lose, but you also don't want your other self to lose... you don't want any of it to be happening at all, either time! Interesting perspective. I actualy really liked the game-y parts as a homage to the orignal medium. Havent played the game yet, so it was fun to guess, what scenes mightve come from gameplay sections.

1 set up such a doomsday scene, and 3 showed how love could still exist in such a hellscape. 100% agree!

You were way more positive towards this adaptation than I expected. I thought it was actually rather lackluster.

When the skinny guy in episode 3 got old he look so much like Jordan Peterson, it was extremely funny to me
