The biggest mistake we made in the USA animation industry was allowing celebrity casting to take center stage. Voice acting is a craft, and though some actors can do it, it's clear this cast was not up to the task. The reason the foreign dubs are good is because they cast professional voice actors instead of celebrities. Bring back real voice actors in animated movies!
@DJKennedy904 жыл бұрын
With Robin Williams, it was a novelty that was lightning in a bottle: he could sing, act and have enough emotion to make his character feel GENUINE. Disney and the other studios that came after tried to do this with greatly diminished returns. The original Lion King was a somewhat of a fluke with having more film actors in the VA cast, but almost all of them pulling it off completely... meanwhile, Mel Gibson was as interesting as a block of wood as John Smith in Pocahontas the next year.
@MeeplandHeights3 жыл бұрын
It's also especially annoying to see Hollywood adapt Broadway shows and get a shitty famous singer who can't act or sing in the range expected for the character they were given (usually they were cast based on looks or fame). Like just hire Broadway actors, sure they aren't as well known as Taylor Swift but they're trained to act, sing, and usually dance. Or at least if they're unknown to begin with they likely won't be hired for the wrong parts and given a lead role they aren't physically capable of doing Like the Mamma Mia movie was awful by all means, but at least Meryl Streep was giving it her all and had fun with the role vs other Hollywood actors like Anne Hathaway who seemed to care more about getting her Oscar than being a good actor/singer. While technically Anne was singing better than Steep, Streep just felt more like Donna, Anne just looked like Oscar-bait and a dying waif

The thing is, unlike Kimba there doesn't seem to be new depths here; no twist or nuance. It's a thoroughly lazily made film which prioritized celebrity worship over integrity. I'm not even surprised how this came to be as I completely expected it and it's on par for modern Disney. Like, the bits about clipping are mildly interesting and reinforce the points being made, but we already could tell that the voicework was sloppy, lifeless and without craft. It's fun to dunk on Disney but honestly I'm not sure this film will be worth a 1.5 hour rant to be entirely honest. I guess for Adam it's personal, and that's ok.

The thing is. Because the 2019 version doesn't have facial expressions the cast have to act twice as hard to compensate for the lack of expressions which is something experienced voice actors can do. But the cast is mainly celebrities and people used to doing on screen acting which is different from voice acting all together plus it feels like there's no real direction involved and that's possibly due to Faverau not knowing how to work on animation vs working on live action. Because no matter how realistic an animated movie is, it's still animation. And that's why the Japanese dub is 10x better.

The irony of Scar, his highly testosterone mane, and sad revelation of him being first in line says so much to me about him, mufasa, and their relationship... and not just mufasa keeping scar around for pact reasons but maybe also for reasons of the guilt he may feel for inheriting the kingdom over someone who may be more right for the job. Another reason could also be mufasa even needing him around as a “sperm donor” for a stronger lineage in their pact. It’s just interesting to see that there’s a possibility of conflict within mufasa while showcasing scar may have been right. The remake completely removes that human-like quality in favor of realism of mufasa having the darker mane ... I think it’s more interesting to see the other and adds more complexity to the relationship between the two brothers.

16:09 In the '94 film, the chord that hits when Scar jabs his claws and Mufasa cries out in pain, I'm pretty sure it's a minor 7 flat 5 chord (the notes in this case being E, G, Bb, and D, with the E as the highest note of the chord in that instance); it's used in that case to emphasize Mufasa's shock at what's happening and what is about to happen, and Hans saves the minor chord until he's thrown from the cliff. In the remake, I wouldn't be surprised if Favreau asked him to make it more sad for the sake of the audience knowing what's going to happen based on their knowledge of its original, because he thinks the audience can't figure things out for themselves.

In the original Aladdin, he was just as energetic as Robin Williams. When dubbing in spanish, Disney has 2 priorities: keep the original emotion (even if it's bad acting) and have perfect lip-sinc. Those are not the right priorities. They're faithful to both good and bad acting; and they change the words and their meaning just so the sound coming from the characters' mouth coincides with the mouth movement, sometimes leading to what I call: -"Yoda speech": like when "Yzma is back" became "Yzma de regreso está" wich means "Yzma back is"; or "The wilderness must be explored" to "La naturaleza vamos a explorar" wich means "the nature we will explore"; or "you're lower than dirt, you're an ant" to "Una hormiga es lo que eres, no eres nada" (an ant is what you are, you are nothing) just to name a few. -and Anime speech: like changing "Is your brother uninteligent?" to "¿Y tu hermano no tiene inteligencia"? (Does your brother not have intelligence?); or "And then she eats it" to "Y luego se lo cena" (and then she has it for dinner); or "I was born" to "vine al mundo" (I arrived at the world"). As a spanish speaker I must say this is really gringy. They even changed the wildebeasts from "The Wild" into "antílopes" (antelopes) because it fits the lip movement better than the spanish word for wildebeast (ñu).

Voice acting in Japan is huge. In France (even thought it makes me cringe and I prefer watching a movie in its original language) we also have a long tradition of voice acting. Some of them are famous and have done their job for more than 30 years. And the thing is, there is also a good tradition of voice acting in the USA. Just watch Avatar the last airbender, Batman the animated series. Great voice acting... But it seems that they didn't cast voice actors for that movie, they casted celebrities. And that's always a recipe for disaster.
@kramenisfalling4 жыл бұрын
There definately are really good professional voice actors in the US, but they're not anywhere near famous as regular actors are. Unless you're specifically interested in animation, most of the general public don't ever care to remember voice actors names. They almost exclusively get work on television shows or as memorable side characters because movie industry would rather hire known celebrities they can use to push ticket sales. Not a lot of respect for voice acting as a profession. 🙁
@-Zakhiel-4 жыл бұрын
@@kramenisfalling Oh I agree and it's obviously the same in France. But because at least a third of the movies we watch (for the last 50 years) are american movies, we are more used to hear voice actors, a lot of them are even the official voice for some actors. But yeah, they don't have the same status as "real" actors. Still, casting your voice actors just because they are famous is nonsensical.

The worst thing about the quote about the lion king being "unfinished" is that originally the Lion King wasnt expected to make money so they made it the least important secondary production and actually sent people to lion king as a PUNISHMENT! And yet it made more money than Pocahontas did. So as a secondary production i wouldnt be surprised if they decided to delay the lion king back a bit because of its lack of importance compared go Pocahontas at the time. And the reason why we wouldnt have known it was because of the internet at the time not being so expansive or as developed as it is here now. Thats how we knew so much about Gigantic before it got canceled

I think I can explain all the clipping. I've worked as a studio engineer before and you can have the most expensive mics, preamps, mixing consoles and what have you - but you still have to set the levels and that usually requires the singer to do a bit of a test run - sing as loud and as quiet as they're gonna so you can adjust levels accordingly. And they never do it as loud as they end up being in the real take - so in a normal studio environment you'd ask your singer to redo that part so that you can readjust the gain accordingly. But this aint a normal studio environment and this is freaking Beayonce and I'm sure asking her to do retakes because of sound issues is just out of the question. Still agree there's no excuse - you can setup mics with outboard comps, limiters etc to help keep a more consistent signal going in and I could probably find you lots of kids fresh out of recording school that would have done a way better job. I've heard this kind of stuff before though in a Celine Dion acapella track for a remix competition. Poorly recorded vocals on a Celine Dion song! So kids if you wanna get into this DO IT since the "pros" apparently aren't all that good anymore.
