The only "structures" I can see in the POST GTR Solo Riff #2 are: 1) XOXO OXOX (symmetry) + XOOXX (twice) and then OXO (twice, also symmetry) + XXXOOX XOOXXX (symmetry) and, which I think has more mathematical/geometrical sense: 2) X + OXO OXO (symmetry and repetition) + XX OO XXX OO XX (symmetry, internal structure: 2+2+3+2+2) and then OXO OXO (again) + XXX OO XX OO XXX (similar to end of the first line but 3+2+2+2+3, exchanging the X amounts (2 becomes 3 and 3 becomes 2))

11:59 this one's actually perfectly symmetrical if you count the last 4-s as [ 4+(2+2)+4 ]. So, the last 4 not just ends the first appearance of the riff, but also begins the second one. 2+2 tied between the "measures"
@man_in_space4 ай бұрын
13:13 - The back half of the first line is XXOOXXXOOXX. This can be rendered 2-3-2. The back half of the second line is 3-2-3 by this reasoning. Other than that, that first X on the first line is the makeup for the first line being short a beat-the first parts are otherwise identical.

Glad to have you back ! For the guitar solo #1 part at 9:22 the pattern you noted 4343' 3'4'34 3'4'43 43'4'43 with ' being the accents. I tried to rewrite it and thought I would share this other logic I found. 4 3 4 3' 3' 4' 3 4 3' 4' 4 3 -> this phrase is the one above but 3 and 4s are swapped. Also it sounds like after those 3 accents in the first phrase, this is a new phrase. 4 3' 4' 4 3 -> this phrase just repeats what's above from the 2nd group and the accents are at the same places. I don't know if I'm seeing patterns where there aren't though :') Thank you for the video !

Maybe it's just coincidence, but the verse "5 5 5 3 5", the shortened 3 causes the next 5 to start on beat 1 of the last group of 4 measures of 4/4. In gtr solo #1 section, all three lines are palindromes, but the way you grouped "3443 43443" obscured that. The second phrase of gtr solo #1 might be the palindrome "4 4 3 3 4 4 3 3 4 4" plus a final 4 to finish out the 4/4. However I suspect there's something going on mirror-wise with the melody which might apply to first phrase and not second phrase, so maybe not. I'd have to write out the pitches to make sense of it. The x-o section can be broken down into palindromes several ways, but I dunno, again maybe coincidence. The first line could be: x o x o - o x o x x o o x - x - x o o x x or x o x o - o x o x x o o x - x - x o o x x The second line is just: o x o - o x o x x x - o o - x x - o o - x x x Oh, if we just look at the last palindrome phrase of both lines, it's: x x - o o - x x x - o o - x x (1st line) x x x - o o - x x - o o - x x x (2nd line) i.e. they're the same but swapping the "x x" and "x x x", which is unlikely to be a coincidence. In fact, the second phrase of guitar solo 1 is basically the same pattern. So my final analysis to show as much in common between both would be: your 1st line: x o x o - o x o x x - o o - x x x - o o - x x your 2nd line: o x o - o x o x x x - o o - x x - o o - x x x and that's definitely not a coincidence. Given all the other palindromes, and the stranded "x" at the beginning of the post-gtr-solo, I'd say your idea for the final section to split the 4 into "1+3" is appropriate. Grouping each 4+3 as a "y" (and then y is 3+4 in the second half), I believe it's yyy 4 yy 4 yy 3 1 3 yy 4 yy 4 yyy y

I have watched a bunch of your videos, esp the meshuggah ones, but I still struggle to do my own subdivision planning in my music; I'm not great at theory in general, but you always break it down right in the sweet spot between confusion and understanding. perhaps it could help others as well to see how one might conceive a new riff and achieve something meshuggah-like/inspired by using subdivisions creatively.

Great analysis, the numbers make it so much easier to navigate this song, thank you so much! This is probably too much nerding but here we go: when trying to find a pattern, it helps following the accents. Meshuggah are known for cutting their patterns short at their beginning and/or ending, and consequently adding/skipping beats in a -sometimes- random manner. Additionally, there are often main "melodic" aspects in a riff, followed/surrounded by "filler"-like beats or patterns, that work like rests (Meshuggah rarely have those, they tend to have lower ostinato notes instead). With that in mind here is how I analysed the last riff: Main (accented) pattern+ 7 (with one exception where the 2nd line misses a 3 which is supplemented in the next repetition) 4 3 4 + 3 4 3 4 + 4 3 4 3 4 + 4 3 4 + 3 3 4 3 4 + 3 4 4 3 4 + 3 4 4 3 4 + 3 4 3 4 + 3 4 There is sort of a mirror if you look the "filler" beats on the first 4 lines (3443,4334) but maaaybe we are (I am) reading too much into this. The solo 1 can be analysed in a similar way: main (accented) + 10 4 + 3 4 3 2 4 2 + 3 4 3 4 + 3 4 3 2 4 2 + 3 4 3 4 + 4 3 4 (exception- the last accented 4 of the mirror) main (accented)+ 7 3 3 4 + 3 4 3 4 4 + 3 4 3 4 + 4 3 Hope this is doesn't bring further confusion haha!

The explanation you gave about the numbers representing the duration of the groups that divide the riff is in perfect alliance with the intuition I gained from watching your videos, which helped me unlock the extra brain cells needed to actually count the songs by myself. Since you hadn't explained it in plain words before this video, I was thinking about commenting on the way the numbers represent duration ( independently of how that duration is expressed via stops or dotted notes or whatever ), but I thought it would sound confusing. After gaining this intuition, all I usually do is create small groups of 2/3/4/5 16th notes and slowly correct my way to the completion of the riff. Needless to say, you showed me a new way of listening to music and helped me appreciate even more the genius of Meshuggah! You are a great content creator with great intuition that can be transfered to others, which is a rare thing to do. Cheers mate! Wish you the best and I hope that the thing you don't want to talk about evolves to the best possible scenario.

But there is a missing X at the end of the first phrase (or an extra X at the very end depending on how you look at it). "X O X O O X O X X O O X" was mirrored with an X to be the center, then an "X X X O O X" that has also been mirrored right after.
