If I may comment on Lewis’s homeless stories: part of the reason America’s homeless people are so “weird” is partly due to how we treat mental illnesses. Pflax was dead on with the “if you don’t have money, you’re fucked” analogy

Pflax is correct on that.

Maybe because in America we don't want our money being taken by the government to do this, our system would be much better if it were completely privatized for innovation

No joke, when I was moving out of where I lived in Oregon, USA there was literally 3 different homeless folks scavenging through the dumpster in the 24 hour period it took me to clean out and pack up my apartment. Like they knew I was moving, passed the word along, and came by to dig through my leavings for the treasures. I gave away a lot of food that day but at the same time it's not only distressing as much as it is sad that that has to be the case. Some of those folk decide to live that way but the system definitely necessitates that level of poverty at some degree.

Homeless problem has some to do with mental illness, and a ton to do with drug/alcohol addiction. (Call it that a mental illness if you want, I really don't agree that it is..) Massive opiate addiction happening in America right now. People on the streets are mostly drug addicts who don't go to shelters because that would require them to get/stay clean from drugs/alcohol.
@MrDisgruntledGamer16 жыл бұрын
A massive percentage is also alcoholism, tons of drunk homeless out there. I feel like half of them start off clean and then they get it in their heads that all hope is lost and so they say wataheck ill try it cus another homeless guy is like this some good shit. IT just spreads like crazy. I mean why cant we just have basic income that would literally fix everything. Think about it, right now if you loose it all you dont have a chance in hell to climb back out but if the lowest you can go is living in a shitty condo but having all the basic necessities like shelter, food, water, sleeping, hygiene, you can atleast recover, recuperate, and reorganize to try and turn your life around.

When I saw the title I had a feeling there was going to be a San Francisco reference somewhere. I was staying in the Civic Centre last week and there was at least 6 Homeless people on every street for four blocks. I'm not from the US so maybe that's the case in every US city but it felt like SF took homelessness to a new level.
@Huzaku4 жыл бұрын
Bigger cities tend to have more homeless. Because they know the people in those cities tend to have extra money. In Austin Texas there is a homeless person at every light holding a sign. It's very odd because it's almost like it's a career. A large amount of then arent even actually homeless. They do it because its quick cash and they have no shame I suppose. I've talked to a few of them in different cities, because I also attract these kinds of people and they can make several hundred dollars in less than an 8 hour work day. It's very odd, and I feel the people who are actually homeless and in need of help have it harder because they have people who are poing as a homeless to avoid getting a real job, ect. Its fascinating, and sickening, and its everywhere throughout the US.

Outside a grocery store in Pismo, last summer, I go out the door with my basket with two bags of groceries in it. A homeless man came up to me, two feet outside the door, somehow behind me as well. So he must have been waiting, just.. pressed up against the wall on the left, and he comes out of no where aggressively saying "maam, maam, maam." I jumped and looked at him, he's dirty and grabbing at my cart, I said, "Uh, no. Sorry, I have to go... I just spent it all on groceries." and walked faster, and he angrily said, "I was just going to help you put your groceries away! But forget it now! I wouldn't help you with anything!" He didn't have a store vest that the employees wear so hes not associated with them. I'm a woman.. I wouldn't even let a clean stranger, man or woman, come to the back of my car with me, especially if they were aggressively going let me help you with that! If someone is just walking by behind me, I have half an eye on them.
