While I think Pyrion and Lewis were misunderstanding each other, I'll say that, yeah, many stores don't want their margins to get too high. They know they make the most profit at a certain margin, because if prices are too high, people will buy less. I used to work at a store where we looked at our margin every hour. If it was too low, we'd promote something with a higher margin, like accessories. If it was too high, we'd run a timed sale or give out coupons. This led to more sales, on average. The worst-case scenario was ending the day with low sales and a high margin, because it looked like we weren't even trying.

I was that person who had to remind my roommates to pay bills and had the bills in my name. The way the utilities worked in my state it was connected to my SSN and affected my ability to get utilities in the future if it went deliquent. I think the reason islands choose to be tax havens is because they largely don't have their own industry or sellable natural or refined resource. Tax havens still charge tax, it's just much lighter than other countries, but that small amount of money goes a lot further in a small island which can directly see the effects of that money filtered through the country's industry and services. We see time and time again what happens when island nations do attempt to exploit a resource and for a while do well, pour all their money and culture into that resource, only to then be undercut by another area who can produce more and cheaper, then when that resource fails, all that investment and reliance goes down the drain and we see those islands become incredibly unstable. The thing with channel islands and The Isle of Man, is that they are surrounded by powerful neighbours and corporations and can build an effective service industry that is fairly guaranteed not to fail but the only way to ensure that corporations choose to settle there, pay tax and employ the locals is to make themselves profitable in a way that larger nations simply cannot afford to do. Even if a larger nation did promise low taxes and tried to be a tax haven, the size of the nation and the complexity of the political situation means that at any moment that could change and the company could find itself paying out for a costly relocation. This doesn't, of course, mean that it's a good or right practice, but it is understandable for islands who can't compete in resources, have physical environmental limitations and don't want people leaving the island in an exodus because there aren't enough opportunities - that is a death spiral for an island economy.

Regarding the business model of slashing your prices, it's probably about market segmentation. Higher markups sound better on paper, but won't do you any good if the cheapskates won't pay at all. If you are able to reach the people who wouldn't have bought your stuff before, even at a lower markup, you're still ahead. You just make sure it's marketed differently and maybe a bit harder to do, so not everyone buys at the lower price now.

In that sense, Godzilla, King Kong, and anything Kaijju really is anime-esque to me, right along with kung fu movies. Live adaptations of anime are still anime, so it's not the medium that defines it. Nor is it the source material, since lots of anime are adapted from manga.
