When i played explorers of sky a few years back for the first time i took the quiz a few times until i got an eevee and chose a vulpix as my partner. At the time i was just picking pokemon i liked, i didnt expect to get so attached to them over the course of the game. Especially my vulpix partner Amber. Amber was easily my favorite character of the game. It really was like she was my best friend. I cried at least three times throughout the game, and thats saying something because im not normally phased by video games that claim to be emotional. Whenever anyone asks what the saddest game i ever played was, i usually tell them this game.

I'm pretty sure why this hit the hearts of so many more people than the originals is that it's more personal. In the originals, everyone was there to see you go, so that meant only little amounts of dialogue from each character. In this, only the partner sees you go, meaning more dialogue and more emotion. All the more since the partner does so much more than the partner in the originals.
