So while I agree I have to wonder if people would rather get a crowd funded game like D1 released for example OR If they could get Destiny post the expansions that arguably fixed the game for the majority of the players but only on Epic for the first year. Because I seriously see the same shit brought up now back in Steams history yet everyone acts like Steam is some fucking Diamond company without compare. Where it was really just a penny covered in shit and over the years the shit has mostly been wiped off so you're like wow what a shiney and lucky penny... I'd never replace this.
@enlightendbel5 жыл бұрын
Thing is, people INVESTED through crowd funding. That's how that system (the specific platform this was hosted on) works. If the company/game does well, people get more in return, just like stocks (the platform used uses a stock alike system). People that invested are NOT customers, they are investors. And as with the stock market, if investors are not content with the direction a company is going, they are free to sell their stock. And the game studio is offering to buy back that stock. The issue here is not the actions of the game studio or the deal they made with Epic. The issue here is people being fucking idiots with their money and not understanding the system they put money in.

Exclusivity deals aren't the problem, it's business. It's the companies just outright turning their back on the consumer and changing their mind last minute. Exclusivity breeds competition and that can be good. But when the competition is outright inferior, there will be backlash. Exclusivity between Xbox and PS is great because it breeds competition for better first party titles or other exclusive titles. Epic is paying Developers to lock down on their store; they're paying enough that they basically don't have to sell the game to make the money. But if no one is buying the game; Epic isn't making a return on that investment - and the developer is left out in the dark with a game that isn't selling; once the bribe money runs dry, there's no players left to justify support of the game, and no income to fund the studio... I mean; I've heard the saying - It's too good to be true; and Epic's "Support" is literally too good to be true for any developer that doesn't already have the support and backing of a major publisher; and signing the Epic deal is 100% PR suicide.

No, it is exactly competition. Monopoly, oligopolies and other forms of monopolistic markets usually cut off new companies from joining the market, in hopes of keeping their market share. Epic games is merely offering a better deal to companies, and is not forcing competitors out of the market in the same way a monopoly would; by cutting prices or inflating the value of a certain object. Instead, I would even argue that steam is a monopoly, considering how many sales it makes, effectively barring out any competition because on other platforms sales are not as common.

Developers stated that they could have everybody refund and still make a profit. This has literally turned from making a game for your customers to making a game for the store you're selling through. They also said they expect about 6% to refund and are okay with that. Think about that. They are willingly trading away at least 6% of their customers for a store front. Epic Games is essentially telling developers, "We'll make it worth your while to screw your fans," and these dev teams are taking it. Gotta love Epic buying out games for exclusivity as an attempt to "compete" with Steam's library.
@wylie28355 жыл бұрын
Not whats happening. Steam is overcharging developers its ALLOWING epic to take advantage and sign exclusivity deals. We aren't consoles. Epic and steam have a few games they release and that is it. 99% of their sales come from outside studios. If steam were actually charging what they were worth devs would lose money signing the deals with epic. As the Epic wouldn't be able to pay them what they would lose by not going to another store. But because Steam stopped being worth 30% 5 fucking years ago when the store became a trash heap of games that allowed Epic to take advantage of their ridiculousness. And there is no "compete". They are currently beating steam at thier own game and will continue to do so until steam wakes the fuck up and lowers their cut to what their service is actually worth. Steam is the problem here. Steam never did anything that would stop Epic creating their own storefront and competing. Anyone could make a storefront and make it better than steam and there would be legitimate competition that would benefit the consumer. The precedent that epic is setting is like that of the console market, where each storefront will have it's own exclusives and once that happens, noone can break into the market because they won't have their own exclusives. It also prevents any competition between the stores as people will either have to pick their favourite exclusives, or use both anyway (so there's no actual competition). As much as Steam could do with better consumer protections, it has at least made steps towards them, gradually. Epic is taking a giant leap backwards. Exclusivity deals shouldn't even be legal. Arlack whats wrong with the epic games store? Seriously? Valve has had a monopoly on that market and monopolies are never a good thing.
@MaidenLoaf5 жыл бұрын
@Kratos - Epic Games isn't providing competition because they aren't actually providing the same product. If I buy a phone, be it an iPhone or a Samsung or an Oppo or a Sony, they ALL have the *same general functionality* of being smartphones. Where they differ is what they offer in terms of user experience and additional features on top of that. What Epic is doing with its exclusivity deal nonsense is *NOT* providing users with a different experience for fundamentally the same product - which is what proper competition would be in this regard. They aren't breaking Steam's monopoly by offering the same fundamental products with a better experience... they're just trying to make their own monopoly with their own products separate to Steam. For example, if Game X is released on Epic but not Steam, I can't have the Steam experience or the Epic experience of Game X, because Game X is epic exclusive - there's literally no competition to be had.

@@S71xx Ive mentioned it in another comment but I'll reply with my personal experience, it's a small 5 project sample with a essentially 50/50 success rate. ( All on Kickstarter) 1. The outlier project was a project called Skarp, which was removed by Kickstarter so I wasn't actually charged for it so I don't count it as success/fail. 2. The first successful project I aided was dungeons and drafts, a fantasy/DnD themed bar in Colorado. I got everything I backed for, they communicated well, and if I ever make it to Colorado I get perks as well. 3. The second successful project was Braeön (now called Forj) which was a ribbon that could adhere to itself when heated and was moldable and as strong as steel. I don't think communication was as good with this one but they still delivered and made up for the late delivery by doubling everyone's quantity of ribbon. 3. The first fail was funded around the same time as the bar was, and still has yet to deliver (I think we are reaching year 4 past the delivery date). This was actually from an already established company called Munitio to fund their Pro30 line of on ear headphones. Communication was good at first but the project ran into issues (I won't elaborate to keep this comment shorter, I'd say it's abandoned, no updates in a year) 4. The second fail was funded around the same time as the Forj ribbon and is working on 2 years past it's delivery. This was meant to be a case and cooling solution that used vapor cooling. It was also by an established company called Caylos and the prototype had even been at CES. Delivery has kept getting pushed back with various explanations, but I'd still classify as incomplete even if they haven't communicated well.

Steam has been around for 15 years, it could do with competition. however. If your a game developer and your signed up with steam as content distributor there ARE benefits of course. Yes 30% does seem pretty steep but that 30% gives you instant access to a market of 125+ million users, and your game is advertised in multiple ways. Steam sales are at Steams discretion based on various factors like theme, product sales slumps, sequel releases etc, its not stealing when you sign the agreement that lets them do that, by no means is that theft. Its a free market, devs and customers can use whatever platform they feel is best for them, but Epic Games is using Loss Leader techniques that will change once they get a certain amount of active users drawn in and they can afford to raise prices to make the arrangement better for themselves.

@@blaidddrwg-ye9dy Sure, but the way they are aggressively approaching devs to choose only their platform, forcing players on their platform, is an archaic practice. Especially when they couldn't even be bothered to release a basic featured store and platform. Their privacy policy is dubious. Its pretty much non-consumer friendly platform. Even Origins and Uplay launched in a way better state and theirs was only proprietary platform for their own games. Legally they might not be doing anything wrong, but they surely are getting tons of negative attention by doing these practices. Especially for everyone who loves and is used to Steam.

Ok so when good games come out now they go out on epic store. We can't have like just any normal experience with games now, the games either have to be upsetting/lied about and trashy, or the good ones that are getting out there now are going onto the Epic Store.
