the biggest problems i heard is the inconsistency in game logic and the occasionally attrocious controls, so pretty much in line with this review. Oh and the writing as well. The dialogue is relatively poor and the main characters don't have a single interaction with the primary antagonist until like world 4 or so.
@OreMiner647 жыл бұрын
Reviews is not about seeing as many as possible and getting a number.It's following Critics their opinion you agree with.If every single critic I follow says it's shit then for me it will indeed be shit.You might say: then it's not about the game but about the Critics so read other Critics.Which if you do say this please do not even bother replying because I will automatically assume you are an idiot because you are basically saying "This game is so good that these Critics are wrong" and "Your taste is shit"

Sure, ZP videos are entertaining, but he's also providing his opinion on games. It's just that he doesn't really do what most reviewers do and say "This game is good," or "This game is bad," it's more like he's trying to mention some pros and cons of games, letting the audience decide if the pros he mentioned are worth buying the game for, and the cons aren't a deal-breaker. He's also trying to explain in five minutes his own personal opinion of a game, rather than spending 10-minutes explaining why he thinks a game is good or bad. Really, saying "It's only entertainment, it doesn't matter," is something most ZP fans say when he reviews something they like and says some bad things about it, so they justify disagreeing with his opinion with that defense. Try Angry Joe or one of those reviewers who review old games where the public has already formed their own opinion for a clear-cut "It's good or it's bad, and here's why," ZP is for people who can use their brains and want to hear advice on which modern game to get.
@havoren6 жыл бұрын
Well from what I could tell from the review, it’s a boring game that tries too hard to convince you that it’s fun. Rather than a game like A Hat In Time that ISN’T a boring game and doesn’t bother trying to convince you that it’s fun because it already knows that you’re having fun when you play it.

I can't help but agree with Yahtzee, there is no point in a platformer being 3D, Jak and Dexter realized that early on and went the action-adventure route and Mario tries to bridge the 3D spectacle with 2D accessibility, because his 3D games don't sell and his 2D ones are same-y. Rare and Psychonauts received a pass because their games are full of life and colorful characters, but if we were to actually judge them as platformers, the nostalgia wouldn't allow it to taint.
@keklekekle11147 жыл бұрын
Me: I dont agree with this guy, im going to tell him why i disagree. wait... i agree with what he says, i just didnt realize... Im guessing its beacuse it feels wrong that 3D platformers dont have a place and that just couldn't enter my mind.
@jackinthebox73197 жыл бұрын
Have to agree on Psychonauts, I picked it up as an adult and while I adore the game for it's style, imagination, overall charm and story the platforming can get more than a little bit contrived. Still gets a pass though, since the positives far outweigh the negatives.
@CuriousKey7 жыл бұрын
I think it comes down to what you define as "platforming" gameplay. For example, I think the Prince of Persia/Assassins's Creed core gameplay works very well in 3d, and I would definitely say that while it's not the platforming of the early 3d era, it is certainly part of the extended family of platforming. We can't take 2d platforming, shove a third dimension on it, and expect it to still work, but I think platforming *can* work in 3d, it just needs to be designed very differently.
@LordConstipation7 жыл бұрын
Jackinthebox Not only contrived, the platforming in Psychonauts was often (for me) annoyingly difficult and buggy. In particular I remember doing a section inside the crazy actress's head where you have to swing from pole to pole, but the poles are arranged in an upward spiral, so they're all at a different angle and elevation from the one you're on. You're supposed to be able to get to the next one just by jumping/swinging in its direction, but for me Raz would constantly either not jump high enough to grab the next one or he would simply jump straight ahead, into the abyss. That platforming bit as well as many others throughout the game made me want to tear my computer apart, but fortunately I stuck with it for the story and characters.
@soylentgreenb7 жыл бұрын
It's not only the the 3D-ness that ruins platformers. 2D sprite based hardware was literally chasing the beam and the CRT TVs had merely microseconds of display latency. It's as responsive as playing a game at ~200 FPS on a PC today. Early 3D hardware ran platformers at ~15-30 FPS with double buffering. That's ass. Modern 3D hardware and multicore CPUs often have 3-5 frames of latency and an LCD TV without game mode has 50 ms or so latency. That's downright horrifying even at "perfect" 60 FPS.

I really don''t like the use of nostalgia in contexts like this because it always seems to be used to imply that we falsely enjoy something. People don't still like Banjo Kazooie because they are blind of its faults, they liked it despite its faults back in the day and still do now. Games like Mighty no 9 and Yooka Laylee have other problems, new problems, that would have left us with the same opinion back in the day.

All his points are fair, but that being said if you're in the mood for some good old fashion Rare goodness, I think this game serves its purpose quite well.

Yooka-Laylee is a really good game if you STILL enjoy playing Banjo-Kazooie. If you don't like this "outdated" kind of gameplay, then of-course you won't like Yooka-Laylee either. It was made for the fans of Banjo-Kazooie by the same core team, and the fans got exactly what was promised in the Kickstarter. The soundtrack is also one of the best video game soundtracks of the year. You can't say the same for Mighty No. 9 as it plays nothing like classic Mega Man and the creator had little to nothing to do with the project (he was more busy trying to kickstart even more games and anime bases on them), it just a quick cash-grab without any soul.

To be fair to that point, Yooka's review scores are all over the place; one could just as easily assume it hits a sweet spot for some people and not for others as they could that it's a good game with a bunch of haters or a bad game that some diehards are refusing to give a negative score to.

As a fan of Banjo-Kazooie I can confirm that not only is the "it supposed to be poorly designed game that has lazy written all over it. Um, I mean its supposed to feel old so you can't complain that it feels old!" really stupid and misses the point but also shows that maybe you haven't played Kazooie in a while. Because both Banjo games are way better than Yooka-Laylee. And if they wanted to make a sequel they should have made it an evolution that expanded the genre. Not hid behind some sorry ass "its supposed to feel old that's why the game feels like it slapped together last minute" excuse.
@Tamacat3887 жыл бұрын
Crispy Bacon Shovel Knight is a good example. It was filled with nostalgia while still building on concepts and making a name for itself. It hit with players young and old without any excuses. Nobody has ever had to say "well its like an 8-bit platformer NES games its supposed to be bad"

Which is probably why its release passed with almost no real notice from the media.

Amy what pisses me off is The Completionist's review of it, saying he was move to tears by this game that is mediocre-at-best just reeks of nostalgia to me, it didnt improved from the flaws of Banjo-Kazooie, the music is alright but personally the style isnt my thing and the character's voices are just annoying, ive played a little and honestly you can get more rewarding platforming from Mario Maker. As someone playing Yooka Laylee for the first time, it makes me wonder how much of my enjoyment of the Rare games was due to A) nostalgia, and B) the fact that they were the best games AT THE TIME. Then I have to ask "Is Yooka-Laylee BETTER than Banjo-Kazooie?" And my answer is a disappointing "No." The Rare games were simple. The worlds were compact. There were maybe two dozen characters. The controls were basic. You could say it was the "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" of video games. Yooka Laylee is the kid on youtube who adds electric guitar riffs and a drum solo to "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and wonders why it gets maybe 1k views and 20 likes. The worlds have inflated, but there's still only 100 notes and 10 jiggies, and now there's so much visual filler that finding them all is like combing your yard for pennies. Speaking of endless and unrewarding, the dialogue is painful. Many "cutscenes" can't be sped up, and the 4th wall jokes are run into the ground very quickly. They've expanded controls, which is good, but the original controls are still buggy and the new stuff doesn't add any depth. Which is honestly a good description of Yooka Laylee as a whole. They kept the good stuff, the bad stuff, and threw in way too much extra stuff that adds way too little.

The game's a solid 7 or 8 out of ten, leaning more towards the 7. And that's okay. The fans got what they backed the game for. Very good points raised here, though.

Why did people think this game was going to be good? These nostalgia-driven Scamstarter games are completely mystifying to me. "We're blatantly aping something you played when you were 9, so please give us thousands of dollars that you won't get any return on. Oh yeah, and here's a few concept art drawings. The game's not actually done yet, but it will be."

Actually the Kickstarter for Yooka Laylee did in fact show gameplay though, this wasn't a Mighty No 9 situation. Also you have to understand there are people who like 3D collectathons and not due to nosalgia. It's a fun genre and quite a few people got into it when they were teens or adults much later after the collectathon genre died. If a genre you currently liked stopped being made for 15 years and someone came along saying "we're going to bring it back" you'd want to support it. I actually loved Yooka Laylee because it was exactly what I wanted and I didn't even back it.

''that you won't get any return on'' On kickstarter I spent less on the game the game than I would have in retail. The game was what I wanted it to be and thanks to my investment they now have a studio that can bring more games.

1:44 Yes, I hate when games break the 4th wall. It's so pretentious. So many Indie RPGs HAVE to do this, because of course taking the game seriously would be nerdy. We can't have that. We're playing a computer role playing game.

I like the game a lot, but he's right about inconsistency, the rules are kind of case-by-case and I find myself having to find new solutions to puzzles that are essentially the same as something I've already done, except the trick I used then suddenly isn't working now without any explanation.

"Yooka-Laylee is to Banjo-Kazooie as Mighty No. 9 was to Megaman" Yeah that's legitimately obvious, seeing as Yooka Laylee is trying to bring back and use all of BK's various tropes to otherwise reboot the franchise, and it actually did a good job at that as opposed to Mighty No. 9 which tried to be Megaman, but failed miserably
@ArtificialDjDAGX7 жыл бұрын
It did just like MN9, failed miserably, you dolt. I guess you've played the entire game now so I bet you know better now. Also, it showed multiple red flags during its development that lead to it becoming shovelware trash.

Well, JonTron was going to be in the game, then he said stuff like "rich black people commit more crimes than poor white people" (I actually don't know how he went from making funny videos about games to that statement), and then the developers were like "Oh shit, abort! Abort!", and JonTron was like "Oh well, that kinda sucks". So JonTron's not in the game anymore.

@QuartzIsAnOxide7 жыл бұрын
You should watch Jirard's review. He spent half of the review criticizing other reviews for giving it a bad score. Reviewception. His main argument was that it was unfair to give the game a bad score for the technical issues and then not update the reviews when a patch fixes those issues. He had a point.
@VileLasagna7 жыл бұрын
I+Crispy Bacon I was really confused by Jim's review. Controls felt pretty tight throughout the vast majority of the game for me, which I personally enjoyed enough to 100% over easter holidays. There were a few exceptions but mostly minor things. Only thing I found awkward is flight controls. Same with camera. Jim was very critical of this and I found that it was mostly fine. A few select places have some fixed camera angles that are annoying and this compounds the clunkyness of flying around sometimes; Flying is one of the situations the camera can be awkward and flight must keep momentum and turns very wide... so it's hard to make very precise movement, but nothing like... horrendous... Also remember he complaining about framerate issues. I played the Linux GoG build and those were gone. My Low Profile 1050Ti handled that game like a boss. Smooth 2550x1400 all the way with solid frames. Caveat that that build has a bug with the model having a bunch of corrupted vertex coords for the first world boss which wasn't patched last time I checked, but that was it. Regarding Yahtzee's review, I agree with most of what he complains about, but my general opinion of the game is higher. Guess the core substance of the game just appealed to me more as it's still generally pretty good, imo.
@VileLasagna7 жыл бұрын
darkrage6 I must be a god of oldschool platformers then cause I 100%ed this game and didn't feel anything like the control and camera issues he complained about, save for like a couple situations for each. You may also bow in awe of both my FX8150 and my 1050ti, as they kept the game running at smooth 60, even with all the bling at 2550p. That silicon was touched by the spirit of Gaben himself to manage such an impossible feat

If you want to make a Trump joke, by all means, go for it. But a reference or an insult is not a joke. I backed up the video after hearing the words "American politics" and then the ending jingle to see if I'd missed something, but no, "Trump is a pig and ruined everything America has ever done" is apparently supposed to be a joke. It's pretty sad to be making these kinds of "jokes." I got tired of people mentioning that Bill Cosby is a horrible person and calling it a joke, and I'm tired of hearing about Trump.

Kevin R Lol did the little snowflake get triggered?
@kevinr4177 жыл бұрын
hedgehog3180 Did you actually read my comment? I didn't say that Yahtzee shouldn't say bad things about Trump. I said that if that was supposed to be a joke, it wasn't funny. I don't know, I guess I'd just like to watch a video about how bad Yooka-Laylee is and not have someone's political views shoved in my face. It didn't fit. It was literally slapped on at the end. As for being "triggered", I'm way too old for that nonsense. When I was growing up, kids made fun of the nerds and the fat kids. Not saying it was right, but at least kids didn't grow up thinking the whole world had to be nice to them. Now the fat girls demand to be called beautiful, like we can all just stop being disgusted by obesity. This upcoming generation is full of whiny babies who need to learn to toughen up. If you have the right to dress like a weirdo or tell me you're really a wolf in a person's body, I have the right to make fun of you. Freedom of speech. If these people want special treatment, maybe they should contribute something to society. It's weird. I went from not knowing what "triggered" or "safe spaces" meant, to hearing about it and assuming these people were just a fringe group of wackos, to seeing their culture take hold all over the country. What the heck happened?! If things keep going the way they are, our country is screwed. Not only will freedom of speech disappear, but when the country is full of nothing but special snowflakes, other countries will lose respect for us and one more aggressive than we are will probably conquer us when it sees our weakness. So, no. I was not triggered. I'm just tired of all these people patting each other on the back for insulting the President, like they're so clever and original. A lot of these people also need to learn the definition of "Fascist". In many ways, I'm just tired of hearing unsolicited political views everywhere. It just never seems to stop. You hate Trump. Fantastic. Let's all just try to get through the next four years, alright?
@Powoga7 жыл бұрын
You know, a simple "no" would've done the job. No need to cry about it.
@kevinr4177 жыл бұрын
Powoga I did initially just write "no" and was going to leave it at that, but it just didn't feel right. "No" is merely a contridiction. I decided to offer an actual argument instead. It reminds me of a Monty Python sketch about a guy paying to have an argument with someone, but then the guy just contradicts every statement. No it isn't, yes it is, etc. Sometimes I think that's what KZbin comment sections turn into, just people contradicting each other. Or hurling insults. I wanted the gentleman who called me a triggered snowflake to understand WHY he was incorrect, not just deny his statement. Are there better ways to spend my time? Absolutely. But my health sucks lately and I spend a lot of time in bed, so I'm apparently not only bored enough to watch too many KZbin videos, but make comments too. And respond to comments. If I came across as defensive, I apologize. But there's nothing wrong with a good argument. I think a lot of people often decide to take a particular stance on an issue, but can't really tell you why they believe what they believe, and in the worst case you end up with people who resort to violence because they know they're right and you're wrong. The fact that so many people are gathering together to "protest" and end up hurting innocent bystanders and destroying property disturbs me. I can only hope this current political climate is temporary and that people will learn to be more reasonable. But stating that Trump is a pig at the end of a video is only reenforcing people's beliefs without adding any real substance. Just fuel for the fire.
@juliettami776 жыл бұрын
Actually it is a joke. It's talking about one thing and then making an unexpected analogy to something else. Very, very classic joke structure. Just because one person is tired of the subject does not change the rules for various types of jokes.

The Mighty #9 fiasco and the lukewarm reception of Yooka Laylee are victims of what I like to call "Duke Nukem paradox" aka: Too much time to let people imagine in anticipation hype is always in an inverse proportion of what the quality of the game eventually will be. Which is why I'm very anxious about the new Oddworld game...
