Күн бұрын

We are back on potentially the rustiest Mitsubishi Evo In the UK! What has happened to this thing? We begin to start finishing removing the chassis rails as they were very rusty and we continue removing the underseal. But guess what, we found yet more rust!
We do however finally get to making some new panels by hand and cutting out all the rusty bits!

Actually, apart from the Laser- de- ruster- magic- thing they have and the lifts, it's pretty standard sheet metal working tools. And that makes it even more impressive. Shows that tools alone don't make craftsmen. Knowing how to use them does.

I just can't believe how bad these cars rust. I have an IX wagon in Canada and is originally from central Japan and it doesn't have a speck of rust on it and I intend on keeping it that way. Definitely no winter driving for me. I even sprayed the chassis rails with cavity wax as a precaution.

Guys a tip: invest in a high capacity dry ice blaster with a good air compressor around 1000 liter p/m. Saves you loads of work on the sheet metal no need for wire wheels etc and you get everything off.
@TheObnoxiousMrPug
@TheObnoxiousMrPug 2 сағат бұрын
They did have a dry ice blasting company come in a few months ago to do another car. Those systems are not cheap, so it has to be economically viable to buy one. They do have a laser cleaning machine, though.

I blame that shoddy widebody job for a lot of this de-evolution. I had to get a beadroller for JDM rear boot floors too, so many beads and flanges going on there, it did occur to me to use a vice and a hammer if it was just one small bit, but was spotting more rust than I would have liked, did not regret the purchase when it turned out I had to replace everything on each side of the spare wheel well a.k.a all of that floor! That aside, great work! Your friend is gonna be a happy Evo owner! Maybe you can fix up the one James May crashed too 😆

Just wondering, why did you fabricate the section at 11:15 onwards? This piece comes with the new chassis legs, so could have saved you some time. Perhaps you didn't have these available? Not a criticism btw. I am always blown away by your skills and I'm very happy to see an Evo being rescued. Keep up the good work!

There are lots of Evos around in exactly the same state - they were very poorly rustproofed from new and the steel used in their construction wasn't of particularly good quality either - they can and do literally rust anywhere and everywhere underneath - if the rear chassis legs and boot floor are showing signs of grot - you know it's just the tip of a potential iceberg - my mate does a lot of repair work on these - and they can be a right ballache.

Surly, it would be better to either make the rusted panels from scratch using the right tools or sauce replacement panels instead of patchwork quilting the whole car. Just dosn't seem right and on top of that, the price to the customer for the work you're doing mustn't be much more expensive that oem parts. Yes I understand that most of the cars you repair are getting a little low in numbers but it's got to be better than cutting a bit out of this and a bit out of that, just dosn't seem right.

When you restore something, you keep as much of the original as possible, otherwise it becomes a reproduction, and it can affect the value of certain items. This applies across the board to antiques, or even aircraft. You can get into deep water trying to get things re-certified of you replace too much original material. These guys use quality steel, and not cheap copy or knock off parts of dubious provenance.
