There's a really interesting piece of design in this game, which is that getting hit doesn't mean "game over" - it means you have to spend energy in recovering your position. You have to rescue baby mario, or you have to hurry to beat the timer on your transformation. That's something games don't do very often, and it's a really valuable aspect of this game, encouraging players (many of them younger players) to push through difficulty, instead of giving up.

As a parent, I can clarify a little. For the most part parenting just involves a lot of sleepless, keeping the house free of any pests such as frogs, monkey and bandits, and child-proofing any bombs, swords, or other military devices. Hope that helps

I know I played that Frog boss battle at some point, but I had completely forgotten Yoshi's expression when it was over. That is some seriously good image design.

2:57: Not the canniest toad in the hole. It keeps hopping into the wall. 20:50: Also not a clever toad. Partly because it's probably a frog, mostly because it's antagonizing a dinosaur who can turn into a tank. 23:55: A frog enemy. Frenemy, if you will. 24:45: I wouldn't call it a villainess frog, though. She's not classy enough. 26:55: I don't think I'd call it an offal frog either. Not smelly enough. 1:00: Their timing could use a little work. Also their camouflage. 10:55: Mario moved up and to the left while Yoshi fell into the hole. A portent of things to come. 13:10: Nep-en deez? 22:10: "Toby Fox expressions" is an odd descriptor, but I know what you mean, so... 24:30: Thank goodness the koopas saved Baby Mario from being eaten by that frog! 38:05: I love how Yoshi's bulging-eye sprite is used. It's not often, but it adds a bit of expression to that dully cheerful archosaur.

13:05 - This is one of those head-scratchers of a localization choice: the creature is called _Unbaba (Ao)_ in Japanese, which probably ought to have been brought over as _(Blue) Blargg,_ yet we somehow got _Nep-enut_ instead; a play on _Neptune._ If I had to hazard a guess, it would be that _Unbaba_ spelled backwards is _Babaun_ - awfully close to _baboon_ - so you go into the next level expecting still more monkeys in monkey world only to find that the sign reads _'Yeknom's Domain',_ and then surely enough, you encounter a _"Yeknom"_ (Blargg). The localizer picked up on this wordplay, but it just didn't make the jump over to English despite their earnest attempt. Look, if you've got a better explanation I'm all ears.

Your playthrough actually got me to replay Yoshi's NEW Island. And while it is sorta lackluster compared to this, I'll give credit where credit is due. The original Yoshi's Island story has been redone several times, but New Island is the only game to do it while sticking to the basic original mechanics and being its own game instead of a remake. The platforming, keep mario on your back, collect all the stars red coins and flowers gameplay remains. But it has completely new levels for a familiar yet different experience for the Super Nintendo and GBA generations. The only new mechanics are the giant egg and giant metallic egg. And while the eggs were probably advertised a lot in the trailers, they don't become too common in gameplay and overstay their welcome, thus focusing on the familiarity. I don't think you've done a playthrough for anything on the 3Ds, but I recommend one for Yoshi's New Island if you get the chance

The midway rings 100% _do_ retain all of your progress up to that point, red coins, flowers and stars included (even the 10 stars you get for passing through the ring, itself), which is a handy thing to keep in mind. It's often worth skipping the rings until you've done everything else you can so they preserve as much progress as possible (and the 10 star bump helps you recover from any mistakes you made in the process). More importantly, knowing that progress is preserved makes 100%ing the boss stages _far_ less frustrating and tedious than it would be. Yes, at the slightest scratch, you need to wait for the timer to count down completely, so you can make another attempt, but that's preferable to replaying the _entire_ stage up to that point, for sure, especially given how tricky it can be to avoid taking damage in some of those boss fights, like the one in this episode (though there _is_ a trick that makes this one deceptively simple).

14:32 "Panic" isn't the word I'd use for my reaction. 15:05 150% Kudos to actual parents... which includes my brother. The more I learn about parenting, the less I understand why people inflict it on themselves voluntarily. 18:22 Shame we aren't a Yellow Yoshi. 20:37 Hey, at least it was intentional. Not to be a bummer, but a lot of whales have been accidentally torpedoed because someone missed. 22:17 I suddenly crave frog's legs... I wonder why. 23:19 It feels consistent until there's no comparison nearby. 24:08 What an actual "because fuck you" moment. Apparently you can egg or eat them, but idk how with their range. 24:23 I'm sorry, what!? 25:55 I wonder how much hot sauce you need to cover how awful that frog is. 31:28 They are mean out here... bet you can still cook em, though. 32:40 Can confirm, secret red coins are not 100% tinted. 33:35 If you find one, let me know. Closest I can think of is C4, which is very safe until it isn't. 35:47 I was just about to make the "tired of this sound yet?" joke. 37:34 Like it's a cool fight and all, I just can't not think "but there's no uvula in your stomach". 38:04 I'm very glad they don't show them "leaving". Also, Yoshi's expression is on point.

From his comments earlier, it sounds like he _is_ planning to go back, on his own time, to try to 100% the levels he hasn't already (i.e. most of them), so he can tackle the extra stages, though I have no idea if he's going to attempt _all_ of them or not. I wouldn't be surprised if this follows the original SMW playthrough, where the extra stages are tacked on, some weeks later, as a sort of bonus segment, well after the original run wraps up.
