I spent 2yrs to the day building a diesel rat rod with only a 85yr old cab. Besides the seats, I built everything including the frame. I wanted to quit many times but never did and when I took it on the first drive it was the best feeling.

Consider looking at a modern utility trailer build. Notice many of these have a long V shape that ties the coupler assembly to the main frame. This is for lateral and longitudinal stability. If you are going to use that receiver assembly for a recovery point only you should be OK. If you pull a trailer, I think you need a bit more metal connecting the hitch directly to your truck frame, not just the bed assembly. Your overall form and design look well planed. I'm just a little overcautious about customer designed hitches that have no rated load calculations supporting the design.
@sultankuto87244 жыл бұрын
Hey man,i welcome correction since we all learn,but shouldn't the hitch be mounted with support from the chassis?am worried about that awesome bed should you pull something heavy.

Who knew how much cardboard it takes to build a flatbed? 😁 This is going to be a unique truck, solidly built and plenty strong enough. When it's all buttoned-up, I'd be interested to hear how much heavier it is than a stock pickup. She's certainly going to look good. 😁👍👌

Nice bed design but how come you did not make it of aluminum like those on tow trucks? I also have a concern regarding to your structural design of the trailer hitch. All of the trailer hitches that I've seen are bolted or welded to the truck frame for added safety just in case the truck bed mounting bolts or nuts come loose. Hopefully your design can handle the pulling and pushing of the load. Also can handle the load if you use your truck to pull somebody who is stuck or if you are the one who is stuck and they are trying to winch you. It seems that there is a considerable amount of drop from your truck bed frame to the trailer hitch. You should consider installing some E-Tracks for your tie downs.

Great vid. Can you show how you made the mount
@rickfoss11364 жыл бұрын
Harrison Griffin cut square tube to the height you need. Then cut a plate to cap one end. Drill a hole through that plate for whatever size bolt your going to use. Slide your bolt through the hole and put a cpl strong tack welds on the hex side. (Once it’s welded to flatbed you won’t be able to hold the back side) Set your cap plate on one end of the tube with threaded end sticking out and weld it to the tube.

Box your frame while the flatbed is off, and integrate a nice solid hitch that ties into the strength you are adding to to frame(its a win win) due to the extra weight your adding to that frame it can't hurt. . . And have it pop out in that same area behind the license plate. . Just my $00.02 !

**nvm i made this comment before i saw you went a diff route!

You just gave me an idea.. I bought a homemade but well built utility trailer, my only complaint was it has no tie down points, never even thought about just drilling some holes in the metal of the sides in various places. Sure beats noisy and in the way D rigs

Having your rear bed mounts at the end of the Toyota frame may cause the frame to flex at the end with a heavy load. Consider boxing the end of the Toyota frame with plate. The plate will stiffen the frame and should stop it from flexing.
