To shift a normal transfer case you are supposed to be rolling slowly as you pop it in neutral, shift the t case, then pop it back it gear. The teeth on your gears are hitting end to end. Rolling a bit will help them mesh together.

The problem you're having is called gear bind. Always go to neutral, bump it into reverse and then back to neutral to shift the t-case. She will shift like butter everytime.

Your transfer case gear is preloaded and making it hard to shift, you might have to move it back & forward to unload it to shift. The shift cable is the way to go, l did this to my NV241OR.

Try putting the trans in N. Leaving your foot off the break when shifting the Tcase. This takes the bind out of the gears. Gives them the slight movement they need to freely engage.

The new shifter looks Awesome!!! The old one looks off and out of place. You should get a better shift knob for the Tranny. The round knob looks out of place. You need something that will go with the interior or something that will Pop!!! Like a cool skull, piston head or something similar to the Transfer knob. You can billet one or get better lookin on off Amzon or Ebay. Anyways.... your build is comming out Awesome!!! Can't wait to see it finally done... keep up the Awesome work...

Cannot wait to see it in action!! About the t case, we used to go to neutral then shift it while in revers and it should just pop in.. When trying to shift when your stagnant, the gears dont really mesh in very well..

every 4wd truck/jeep ive owned t case behaved like this unless it had locking hubs....t case doesnt have as sophisticated syncro system like a manual transmission so everything must line up perfect to get it into gear.....im not sure if its supposed to be like this but its always been the situation for me so i just lived with it.

Put in a Behemoth transfer case if you are going to swap it out. I’ve had one in my obs for about 2 years with heavy use and it still the easiest shifting tcase I’ve ever had.

The push pull cable shifters need some adjustment/fine tuning to hit the sweet spot

That sounds normal. They won't shift well if you're stopped. You've gotta be rolling slightly. Like 0.5 mile per hr.

Almost all transfer cases are finicky like that. Drive it a while and just like anything else in life, you will get the hang of how to shift it smoothly with no issues.

@@austinniemela I’ve only had 4wd jeeps and samurais …. But that doesn’t seem right, from all the guys I have been around with the GM NP cases
