I’m Australian and started a new job recently. The guy in charge there asked me what kind of music I listen to. I had been listening to ‘Sound as ever’ recently and said that I had been listening to You am I. He replied with ‘I’ve never heard of them’ so I played him Berlin chair. He listened to the song and said ‘Yeah, they’re shit’. I don’t work there anymore.

This was the song that kicked off Aussie rock in the 90s. Absolute classic, and as most of us know, half of the inspiration for silverchair's name (with Nirvana's 'Sliver')! Tim Rogers is a bloody legend, I've met him very briefly. Aussie icon, national treasure.

A 15 year old me discovered this song 1994 as a music track that was included on an American CD-ROM computer game called Quarantine. It was probably my first music CD and the best track of the game. The heyday of Australia music. I saw them in Berry this year - they were the best band there by a mile - 25 years on.

You Am I were always the tightest band on any bill they were on. Being that rehearsed let them lash out when they wanted, and still be in sync. Last time I saw them was when they were touring the Hi Fi Way/Hourly Daily anniversary shows. One of the best concerts I've ever been to. I think Tim is perhaps the best song writer Australia has ever produced.
@benwatson34822 жыл бұрын
@@Neilios1000 agreed, Tim is an under rated gem. I saw them play support in a pub bar in Chicago one time. After Tim lit the bar on fire the main band came out and chastised the crowd for not appreciating what they had just witnessed. Was a fun gig. A shame they were never able to crack the US.

The Phoenician. I remember after a young girl OD'd on e it ended up turning into a pokies venue. We started losing a LOT of great venues in Sydney after 1999. The Olympics really homogenised the place - took a good 10 years for some vibe to get back in the city than lock-out laws hit and so many clubs and restaurants closed down. Than COVID hit. I remember listening to a recorded live show of YAI playing on JJJ - they were at a festival in the States in the late 90s. They were nowhere close to being the headline act. They are absolutely killing it. Crowd were quiet then louder and louder as the band started really getting into it. In between songs, some guy yells out "WHOOO ARRRRRE YOOOOU?". Tim replies immediately: "Who are we? Who are you? WHO ARE ANY OF US, WHO THE F&CK KNOWS???? Alright, We're Crosby, Stills & Nash - THANKS FOR PAYING ALL THAT MONEY FOR ALL THAT FREE LOVE PEOPLLLLLE"." Crowd goes nuts. Just an amazing band, so lucky to have had them performing for most of my life.
