So glad to hear so many perspectives on this topic. This video is also a self reflection on my relationship with the gym, which I'm correctly working on. Thank you for sharing :)

My gym journey has been quite the ride. Started in 2009, trained a lot and enjoyed it a lot untill 2012. Around 2012 I started develloping some bodydysmorphia and my joy in the gym got replaced with stress and never being content with myself. This lasted till around 2014. I had to quit the gym because it really became far too overpowering, I was doing nothing else but gym gym gym, eating, prepping, tired from heavy workouts, little social life, stress and discontent about my physique. Quit for 4 years, had to put more time in my studies, focussing more on also other things in life but became unhealthy, skinny fat, lots of gaming, going out with bad friends, drinking more. Got back in the gym 2018 and had a far better mentallity. No longer bodydysmorphia, more happy. Made some progress untill 2020 where with covid all gyms closed and I purchased a full homegym. Got again some problems with being obsessed with the sport. Got a non gym related injury that forced me to quit for a while in 2021. Got back in 2022, suffered a serious injury in the gym after only 4 weeks of training. Only saw a 'gym' for 2 years doing some rehab work at a PT. Currently back in the gym since a month, but now the focus is only on getting my injury back to 100%. Might even need surgery anyway. Thanks for coming to my ted talk lol

I have a conflicted relationship with the gym. Part of me loves the consistency and dedication and the good feelings after a hard workout. The other side of me sees my weaknesses like body dysmorphia, competitive spirit and expecting growth which makes me nervous for the mental battle to keep the gym as a positive in life instead of letting it becoming a negative.

Bro, I feel you, I'm literally in the same boat. Been doing "bodybuilding" for a couple years, and I look and feel good, but sometimes it feels like it takes control of my life

i started going because my cousins and Sam Sulek got me into the gym, i already knew that almost all the physiques that I saw were basically unattainable for obvious reasons. instead i changed my goals at the gym and instead just focused on looking at my progress and pushing myself to just enjoy my time at the gym.

I'm really glad you had the right mentality from the start :)

I just go to the gym bc it gives me a more energetic feeling along the day and it makes me happy.

Same here, make sure to keep it that way :)

I wish that could be me. Ive never had a gym session, regardless of how easy or hard it was, that didnt make me feel awful and drained both physically and mentally. After almost 5 years of neurotic consistency I just find myself wondering why it never gets any better.

This won’t be popular because I am not spewing blind positivity like you’re encouraged to on this platform, but the video only has very surface level advice that you hear about anything and everything from a young age, it doesn’t show a new perspective or any real solution.
@javajuic37 күн бұрын
@@qweewq2606 if I understood correctly, your saying my video is very surface level, which is a fair critique. You can't really go too deep in only 8 minutes, but I hope to all who watched the video, that they would consider their reason of going to the gym, and have a healthier relationship with it :)

For me it's just something I can do every day that is a rock in my routine. If I go to the gym, I'm doing something good that day. It leads to more good things. It helps me break out of bad mental states. It helps me feel strong and accomplished on a daily basis. If you are torturing yourself with unrealistic expectations then you are doing it wrong. Just try and be better day by day, week by week. Even if you are the same this year as you were last year, you are still WAY stronger than you would be if you didn't lift at all.

Working out has only served to make my life worse in every concievable facet of life. I'm either sore or in pain every single day. Every workout triggers depression and anxiety. I fixate on food choice every second of the day. Im always too sore to do basic chores like clean or pull weeds. I cant have anyone over because my place is a mess. And even through all of that every day for years on end, I still look DYEL and cant even get a date if i wanted to. I'm trying so hard to let go and just give up, but i have been staring at this goal for so long, I don't know how to cope with never being able to become something worth it.

I’m really sorry to hear that. I don’t know what the right decision is for you right now, but I want to encourage you to stay strong. Recognizing the problem is already a huge step toward improving your life, and I believe in your ability to work through this man :)

this video is very very well put i don't know about other parts of the world but where i live no one has the culture sense of sports people would start MMA and start comparing them self's to jon jones or when they start weights they start comparing to CBUM or some influencers.. i was like that for sometime and it was stressful, as said in the video GYM or sport should be a part of your life not your entire life, people need to treat sport as a hobby/passion not as work it's a journey to look back to when we are older and smile and tell stories about not something we regret doing or dying for, thank you for the video.
