All of them end in apathy
@wordswordswords242 жыл бұрын
Most likely either the first or fourth one. It has been stated that the show was intended to be something else, but HBO wouldn't let it go through unless it was about Scooby Doo, after that the writers either said "let's show them by making a terrible show so we can make the thing we really want!" or "eh, whatever, let's keep writing what we were already making but with new names and faces"
@GioSerpo2 жыл бұрын
It's exactly the opposite, but in a way, similar to what is happening with the Hogwarts Legacy video game. Let me explain. A certain group of people absolutely hate the owner of the Harry Potter, IP, which should be obvious. They've gained over a million people in a boycott against said video game, except, them talking about it and giving it free publicity is causing it to be the best selling game on Steam AND Xbox, and the SECOND best selling game on Playstation... It don't come out for another month. This show does have a target audience, it's a small but extremely loud group. Normal people hating this show is getting it publicity and viewership, even though it is bad publicity. The group that this show is for absolutely hate J. K. Rowling, and in trying to cancel a Harry Potter game, have given it publicity and sales. Completely opposite circumstances, same outcome. It should be a well established and known pattern at this point. Hate sales. It sucks, but it's true. If you can drum up hate about something, that hate will boil and fester into publicity. Then you're golden. This isn't even the first time it's happened. Time and time again. Look at ANY EA Sports game. All the hate they get every time they pull more of their anti-consumer garbage just equates to sales. I guess this was just a long form way of saying that they intentionally made it to be hated. And the sad thing is, I don't see this trend stopping soon.

I have my own hypothesis that relates more to higher management. I remember the news about multiple cartoon shows being dropped on HBO Max. And now a show with so much dislike comes around? I call that suspicious. I think, at least on the executive level, the show was approved so it could fail. If Velma fails, HBO Max executives could say, "See. Adults don't *really* want cartoons. Let's never fund a single one again." What their end goal is escapes me, but I imagine downsizing is a part of it.

That actually makes kinda sense. I can totally imagine HBO execs allowing this to be made so it inevitably fails (right now it might be viral, but things that go viral due to hate hype tend to crater off instantly once the hype dies down) in order to justify to investors the shelving of properties like Scooby Doo to refocus on other kinds of properties. The trailer was very clear that the show was going to challenge preconceived notions of the original characters. Fred being a man child in this series for example is on point, he was always a preppy douche. Velma being a nerd with bad hygiene, like hello, how are people missing the joke here. The part I hated the most was how Shaggy was being _very_ vulnerable with his feelings for Velma while in the house where Fred got shot, and not only did she gaslight him and belittle his feelings, but they made it an integral part of the solution to her hallucinations. Not only that, she is portrayed as not even giving FRIENDSHIP value to Shaggy, and constantly asks him to do things for her without reciprocating at all. It's like, "the value he gets from driving her around and giving her math answers is the intrinsic value in and of itself." Which, if the show had ANY decent form of narrative expression, COULD be used as a building point for character evolution in relation to his submissive nature, but no. She just uses him in said one-dimensional fashion.

@rosettenrudi I don't necessarily "love or hate" the show. My main gripe (although I never actually stated this) is that it has no coherent direction. Everything is random. Even the general "seriousness" of the show is uncertain. For example, Fred throwing the paper cutter and cutting the guys legs off was just a gag and ignored? But... Why do that? It's like they took a bunch of tropes , amplified them to absurdity, and just said "take it! 😈" Satire is good. Family Guy is a great example of that. But what's needed is a coherent structure of character relatability (to the watcher) and a decent level of interpersonal depth (between characters) Otherwise, everything will feel completely detached, random, unrelatable

NOBODY in Hollywood understands what subverting expectations _means_ let alone how to do it. Oddly enough, Scooby-Doo created the _perfect_ examples of HOW subverting expectations is supposed to work. Not once, but _twice_ in a YEAR. First was Scooby-Doo On Zombie Island, then _again_ with Scooby-Doo and the Witch’s Ghost. Both films set up the joke from the get-go: _Zombie Island_ had an 80s-style montage where every ghost and monster was a guy in a mask, then the Mystery Inc crew got to the cursed bayou, and it turns out there _is_ actual supernatural shit going down out there. In _Witch’s Ghost_ the plot frames the titular character as a wrongfully accused neo-pagan healer that was wrongfully put to death; cue the reveal that, no, she was an actual evil crone, and Mystery Inc has to figure out how to put her down for good. Both movies were landmarks in the Scooby-Doo franchise because they were made _honestly_ and had the right people behind the scenes to make the story and characters engaging and entertaining _without making them bafoons_ in the process.
@Sorain12 жыл бұрын
It occurs to me that the writers for Witch's Ghost (if not the same as Zombie Island) really deserve my respect. When the one biggest twist you can do with Scooby-doo's formula has already been done (and well.) where do you go? How do you surprise and delight the audience? Going with both 'Yes this is Supernatural' and 'But the twist is the 'victim' is evil' let them do that. If one was to try and do a series, the logical route would be to have only a few cases (episodes so to speak) be Supernatural, so the audience isn't sure. Meaning no 'mid season and season ender' always being Supernatural. Something like a one in six ratio, or even lower. There is a lot of miles to journey character wise with the crew accepting that the Supernatural both exists and is vanishingly rare, and learning to be able to face it. Not a shift from 'mystery solving crew' to 'supernatural solving crew' but an acceptance that Supernatural stuff does exist, some of it's evil that need's to be fought, and a reasoned examination of possible supernatural issues matters. You could easily get a 24 episode season and have 2-3 cases be Supernatural in total, provided you resist the temptation to make the opening and season enders among them. (One or the other is fine, but the point is that we the audience need to be unsure.) Go with a really convincing hoax for the first episode, with the crew less willing to dogmatically dismiss a supernatural explanation specifically because they've run into supernatural stuff before. (Oblique reference to Zombie Island and Witch's Ghost incidents works here.) If your going to be 'adult' about it? Then focus on that feeling of having the foundations of your world feeling like sand under your feet. This band of rational (more or less) people ran face first into the Supernatural after debunking it time and again, and then kept going. How did they manage that? Or are they partially on inertia at the start of the season? One could easily write a 'gathering the band together' plot to open with over how they couldn't keep doing the mystery thing after experiencing those two incidents, if they wanted. I would prefer not, because it'd eat screen time you could be spending on making a given mystery's arc better, or the through plot of bigger questions like 'How much supernatural stuff is there really?', 'Why is it that magic hasn't been examined by society?' and 'How does this Supernatural thing work anyhow?'

You know society’s fucked when they go after Scooby-Doo. What’s next? The flinstones? Maybe Fred would have secret gay relationship with barney. God help us all.

Your best and only way to stop such invasion of childhood favs is to ignore everything they're trying create from it. And I mean every single one, don't even engage discussions for it. Give them a total blackout.

Why can't people hate-watch the proper way? You know, on Pirate Bay?

This was my exact thought after my KZbin feed vomited a torrent of Velma reviews. Each one of these videos had thousands of views which made me wonder what percentage of these viewers would watch the show.
@josephbellamy19762 жыл бұрын
Thank you for having this take. I feel like people underestimate how much hate-watching and bad reviews can be good for the thing that you're hating. As long as content creators en masse are constantly reminding people of how bad this piece of art is, people collectively are keeping said art in their minds longer than they otherwise would. And if people are constantly being reminded of Velma, even if the show is critiqued and/or given other negative associations, that's inevitably going to lead to more sales/engagement/whatever. Even if the vast majority of people decide not to watch, that doesn't mean that the small minority of people who do "hate-watch" are in anyways negligible or can't be the demographic that can propel something into commercial success.

Razorfist was right, content creators need to stop covering these obviously bad ragebait sows.

I don't mind, let them waste more money on it. Maybe they can go bankrupt sooner.

@@MephiticMiasma ...WBD will go bankrupt with lousy quarter earnings for spring,summer,fall...decisions like this are just foolish. I HATE when companies get whipped by F3minist groups,actors,media tell them what to do for THEIR audience. Such TRASH...

People may watch part of the first episode but they won’t continue to watch what they don’t like.

*THANK U FOR BREAKING THE INTRO DOWN BC YOU ARE THE FIRST KZbinR WHO GETS IT!* AND I LOVE THAT! This isnt for u but for anyone who may be reading.... Please listen Believe it or not bro but I didn't even know this show existed. I've worked in PR and trust me, these excs know exactly what they're doing. They were banking on the fact that we would hate the material so much, that u would actually create content just to say how much we hate it. *THIS IS A MARKETING MANAGERS DREAM!* They run the show on their partnered (and in this case) patented publishers (hbo max) and pocket all the monies for promotional runs. All thanks to the hundreds of content creators and millions of upset opinions. They didn't have to pay a single cent for promotion. Seriously... *think about that for a sec* Never forget Amazon did the exact same thing with: "The ring of power" So, I say lets really teach these ppl a lesson by not WATCHING or TALKING about their bs cringe works. 🤷

So that's why they are (absolutely) confident on getting a season 2, probably. To sum it up, they're pulling a Reverse Uno Card on us.
