I think the Mandela effect happens because when you remember something, you remember the last time you remembered it, not the original instance. You're basically playing the Telephone Game with yourself. But similar to how text is handled in dreams, text we read in our memories gets replaced with the concept of what was written. Like a pointer referencing a string in programming. You 'remember' the pointer, not the string itself. We don't read each letter after all, we only read the vague, pattern-recognized word sizes and shapes as a single unit. (Unless you have some types of dyslexia.) So when we remember that word written down, we know the concept that was there, pick what it most accurately represents (filtered through bias and other similar recollections), and then visualize what we're now thinking about in its place. This lets us, essentially, complete change the words/titles on things to match our expectations rather than our observations. People remember seeing your Twitch username and URL, and just think that's what they saw on your KZbin URL, since they DON'T remember penguinz0 anywhere near as well. When they remember looking at your KZbin URL, they replace it with the memory of looking at your Twitch URL. Penguin is tied to lots of other competing memories. "moistcr1tikal" isn't.

@wheredoesdonkeykonglive51472 жыл бұрын
The berenstein vs stain has a pretty simple explanation. It’s written in cursive so your brain may skip over a letter easier than if it was in print. Most would assume it is the typical ending to a name stein and fill in the “a” spot with an e in their mind. And once you say stein once you’re going to skip of the letter a in it forever.

This happened to my dad. He remembered working at some store and he saw a keychain or something like it that said “vote for Pedro” and that’s a reference from Napolian Dynamite. Well, here’s the interesting part, my dad saw the keychain in 1995 as he says with his co-worker pointing it out and he asked my mom if she remembers him taking about it and she said she did. Well, how can that be true when Napolian Dynamite was released in 2008, 12 years after he supposedly saw the “vote for Pedro” chain. This phenomenon is not necessarily the Mandela effect, it’s more deep. Sometimes you memories can get twisted and the order can be interrupted. Weird right.

So according to the internet there are two main reasons that we remember Berenstein Bears, not counting the Mandela Effect. First, there were actual knock-offs that spelled it wrong in books. Second, the voice acted stuff pronounced it ambiguously meaning many of us probably heard it as Berenstein.
@nomoretwitterhandles2 жыл бұрын
I'd also like to point out that a lot of children don't know how to spell around the age they'd be reading books like that. Yes, kids can READ, but most cannot read WELL, and out of those that can read well, only few can SPELL well. Now, let's take into account the fact that our memories change as we get older (not the core part of memories, but the little details). For a lot of those kids who cannot spell, as they get older and learn how to spell, they figure out how sounds work within the English language. When it comes to Berenstain vs. Berenstein, we still pronounce the "stain" as "stein" because it's.. not exactly English in origin. So when we learn about how sound AND language effects spelling, most people would assume "Berenstein" because that's how it SOUNDS. When, in reality, due to LANGUAGE, it is spelt "Berenstain". As a person who was a really good reader and writer at a very young age, I frankly didn't give 2 shits about the Berenstain Bears because I had already outgrown that shit when I was 6. By that age, I was already reading books like R.L. Stein's "Goosebumps". Naturally I'd forget how to spell "Berenstain" because I hadn't read those books since I was a toddler; hell, if I was asked how to spell it without any help, I would've spelt it "Bearenstain" or some shit, because they're bears! It's a play on words! That doesn't mean the Mandela Effect is real, it just means I haven't fucking read those books for nearly 2 decades! If anyone tried to remember how to spell the indigenous name of a city they'd heard about 20 years ago, they'd for sure fuck up the spelling. Anyways, people who believe in the Mandela Effect clearly have no understanding of the human brain, nor of child development... There is a REASON we misremember these things, and it's because our memories are just like that! A memory is not a 100% guarantee that something is true!

I think the Barenstain thing, at least for me, is because it is a children’s book, and my parents and teachers always read it to me as stein. Sometimes I replace words I see with fake ones because of the context of the sentence, for example, I will initially read “Will went to the park” as “I Will go to the park”, because I thought I saw and “i” and go makes more sense than went. I think that because stein is a name much more common than stain, a quick glance at the title is read as stein.

I already made this reply, but I'll copy/pasta here. Plenty of us watched their show as kids or read their books, at home, completely unconnected to someone else's pronunciation of that family's name and often with VHS tapes or book covers where we could clearly see how it was spelled. This one is fascinating because there is absolutely no easy explanation for it, it can't just be teachers and parents getting it wrong because that's not how every single person was introduced to the family, and as Charlie said we're all aware of the word "stain" so you'd think if we'd specifically remember that name. We're also introduced to that series early, sure, but you're suggesting despite that series of books and videos being prevalent and us being exposed to it on a weekly or daily basis we never looked at that name again for like another decade and a half. That can't be the explanation, it makes less sense than the alternative, which to be fair is ridiculous.

Same with the fruit of the loom think I remeber very fondly asking my dad what a cornucopia was after seeing it on the logo, and then he taught me. And now people are telling me there was no cornucopia? Also a cornucopia is extremely specific, I can see people thinking curious George would have a tail but thousands of people randomly coming up with the idea of a cornucopia? Nah I’m pretty sure at some point they put it on their products

The brain takes shortcuts when storing memories. For Cheez Itz: imagine a bag of Doritos. You take one of those corn chips out and put it in your hand and you would call that a Dorito. Our brain applies the same logic to Cheez It because we naturally pluralise a product of large quantities. Without taking in too much detail to what we are looking at, we know there is a Z somewhere in the logo of the product but we never pay too much attention to learn where that is. If you think that you are the type of person to pay full attention to every detail you see in your life I want you to tell me right now, without looking, from left to right what colours appear in the Google logo and do it with complete confidence. A logo you’ve no doubt seen multiple times throughout your life but I’m betting most people couldn’t do it. As far as The Berenstain Bears goes, it’s the same thing. We’ve all seen plenty of names that end with -stein, so without paying too much attention to the title, we naturally remember it as Berenstein. As far as Charlie’s own shamwow Mandela effect, he made a great point with Jaboody dubs making a similar video but also I believe that many people are confusing Charlie’s old brand of dubbing videos to similar content. Watching back-to-back videos clicking suggestions over and over seeing dubbed videos, it’s possible people make the connection to Charlie for the shamwow because of Charlie’s video “The Real Smart Mop” which is another cleaning product.

I genuinely don't believe in the mandela effect. It's so easy to make simple mistakes and never notice and its not a streatch to say many others make that same mistake. The human brain just works like that. You know that thing where when you were a kid and you were being drove somewhere and you would imagine a little guy running alongside the car or jumping the buildings keeping up with you? Or you simply visualize it with your fingers as if they were running. Okay maybe you specifically never did that, but many others including I have. In my mind it was always sonic the hedgehog lol, We're all human, we will have similar thoughts, and make similar mistakes. Also bearenstein and stain are only 1 letter off, its not that hard to mistake it. Especially when you're a wee child. I have never heard an adult mistake bearanstein. I even did a little test with asking all my elders whiich we have a lot of here as a native american lol. Its as simple as remembering stuff wrong, and I thought it was stein as well when i was a kid. The fact charlie said he always wrote stain but was corrected to stein shows that he knew back then it was stain but was corrrected to stein so often that his mind switched

Most Mandela effect cases can be easily reasoned by logic. Cheese-It was never Cheese-Itz but you would say cheese-itz because how often are you gonna refer to one cheese-it. Another common instance is misquoting darth vader’s iconic luke I am your father line. It just sounds better than whatever the kind actually was so that’s how people remember it. Some actually are extremely odd and unexplainable like the event the Mandela effect is named after but a lot can make sense if you just take a few minutes to think about how it happened

I think that the Mandela one was because of how history was taught in school. We all assumed his story happened so long ago, and the fact that we were too young to understand how much time had actually passed, that he had to have been dead. I love the mandela effect, ever since I witnessed the Apollo 13 movie quote: "Houston, we have a problem" switch to "Houston, we've had a problem", and then the next day, changed back to the original "Houston, we have a problem". I remember seeing the mandela effect reddit page blowing up about the famous quote being changed, and then seeing the next day all these same thousands of people freaking out because it had clearly reverted to our memory's version. However if you go onto the mandela effect reddit it's full of people with very clear mental illnesses, conspiracy theories, and people arguing over whether their memory is false or not. It's pretty ridiculous.

@c.m.93692 жыл бұрын
People insisting that they remember something correctly is a weird phenomenon. There was this study around the event of 9/11, where people right after the event wrote down what they did and where they were when the towers came down. And then years later they found the same people again, asked them again, and turned out many of them would now tell a different story about where they were and what they did during that time. And many of them were absolutely convinced, even though their actual record of imediatelly after the event said something differently. And how correct they got their memory really didn't link up to how accurate their memory actually was. Which kinda proves that, yeah, no matter how much we think we remember something for sure, there is a good chance that we could be wrong about it. And the hillerious thing is: Even if today, you confront somebody with that study, the response you'll often get will be "Well, sure, but... at least I remember for sure where I was and what I did on 9/11. I'm sure about that, trust me". People really struggle to accept how bad human memory is. And even when you come to accept that data proves how bad human memory is, you are willing to accept it for other people... but for YOURSELF, you will always be convinced that you remember stuff correctly, even if you can't possibly have the conviction you have.

That one at least I can't forget, because the thing I was doing immediately prior to realizing that the events of 9/11 were transpiring was "driving back home from college (I lived 10 minutes or so away and commuted), after my honors sociology course for the day - that took place inside of a tallish building in the downtown area of the city that college is a part of - was unexpectedly canceled mid-class without an explanation as to why they were doing that, except that we should go home", and I walked into my house calling out to my family about having been sent home early for unspecified reasons only to see them gathered around the television, watching the explanation for why I had been sent home play out on the news. I couldn't even begin to recount how my morning or the rest of that afternoon after that "Ah... that's why" moment of realization went though.

I think it comes from assumptions we make about how things work to simplify our memory. Like it sounds correct to say Berenstein because of how many last names end with stein so it makes sense to me that people rely on that assumption, especially in retrospect. Not to mention that most of a long word gets completely ignored by the brain when you're reading it. Neural networks are basically statistical shortcut machines, not really pure computers. Every shared cognitive blind spot we have comes back to that.

Well, -stein is German. A lot of American Jews came from Austria/Germany, so many Jewish Americans have -stein in their names. Also, depending on the dialect of German, the ei combination can be pronounced as like the i in bite, or like the ee in see, or like the ay in may. For example, the word bereit is something like “beh-right” in Standard High German, but in Switzerland you can hear it as “beh-rate” whilst in areas close to the Netherlands you can hear it as “beh-reet” in some dialects. Also, back around WWI many Americans with German names changed the pronunciation to make them sound less German, because the Germans were the enemy in WWI.

as far as the berenstain bears situation it probably originates from the fact that “stain” in a surname is a lot less conventional, kind of awkward and almost derogatory sounding, meanwhile “stein” is a more conventional and familiar end to a surname in real life and pop culture (think Frankenstein) so if you’re not actively looking at the cover of the book (which none of us had probably done for a long time) then you just subconsciously replace the name to something that feels more familiar/real, this probably could explain Charlie’s teacher correcting him as well if she was just a bit of a shit teacher and just assumed that the name had to be “stein” because “stain” sounds weird

This is 100% the case. Couldnt agree more. Like the monopoly guy having a monocle, his design just fits it so well, and intentionally. But he never had one. In Germany, a specific instance of the Mandela effect I've experienced is that we imagine there to be cigarette machine somewhere in the city where there is actually none. Probably because it would be logical or fitting for there to be one but no. Has screwed me over a few times already...

The one that’s undeniable for me is the message on review mirrors of cars saying “objects in the mirror are closer than they appear” when I was a kid I remember vividly reading “objects in the mirror MAY BE closer than they appear” I remember seeing this as a kid and thinking that wording was so funny, why is it may be? It either is or isn’t right? I remember looking for it to see if they all said that and sure enough they did. I think when I was a little older I might’ve noticed the “are” as it is now, but didn’t think much of it, maybe that they finally fixed it. But apparently no cars have the “may be” phrasing. Older cars, nothing. So strange
@Brony_Sage2 жыл бұрын
Oh damn I actually thought it was may be and I remember questioning the "are" part of the phrase a few times.
@d_clarence61742 жыл бұрын
That is very strange, because since my earliest memories of being able to read, the message has always been "objects in the mirror are closer than they appear", in that matter of fact sort of way. Like not 'may be', but 'is'.

Am I really the only one who remembers it as “Bearenstain”? I distinctly remember watching a tv adaptation and finding it odd that the pronunciation in the show didn’t match the spelling of the title. Whenever I look back on that memory, I think “that must be why people who so confused.” But no one ever brings this up.

When we were cleaning out my grandma’s house a few years back I found some old books that very definitely said Bearenstain. And I distinctly remember it always being stain because it struck me as an odd spelling
@LiamTolentino2 жыл бұрын
Finally, another person who remembers it being "-stain"! I distinctly remember it being spelled that way, so every time people bring it up, I feel like I'm alone because no one seems to remember it the same way I do. Maybe it's just the way I remember things compared to other people because I tend to remember overly specific details, usually ones that stand out, and I'm guessing that as a kid I noticed how the name was spelled in an unexpected way so my brain kept that memory while most people just shrugged it off and forgot about it. That's just my theory anyway, but nice knowing that another person remembers it the same :)
@Valstrax4202 жыл бұрын
Simple explanation, you saw it more recently, "a few years" has to be like 2019, at that time it was Barenstain. Before maybe 2014 it was Barenstein. After that was Barenstain. So what you saw is the post madela effect.

I'm thoroughly convinced that the only reason everyone thinks it's spelled "Berenstein" is because they put so much country stank on the name in the intro song for the show. We were all just children who either couldn't read well or pay attention to anything but the animation on the screen.

growing up with ocd, i remember going through this huuuuge bookshelf in my second grade classroom and pulling out groups of books to sort. even though i didn't like 'the berenstain bears' (i thought they were cringe) i would pull out the entire collection of berenstein bear books, and i would literally sort them based on which books spelt it "BerenstEin" and which books spelt it "berenstAin"! i remember this so well since it was on ocd thing, meaning i did it over and over, and the whole time i was doing it i was feeling like the 'E' books were inherently superior and better and more 'right' than the 'A' books.

The Mandela Effect really is scary. Sometimes I ask my mom about certain trips we have taken, people we have met, and she has no idea what I am talking about. Some of my older dreams just sneak their way alongside my memories and totally change them. But I totally agree about the Berenstein Bears, it has never been Beren'stain.' We really are living in a simulation.
