I agree with his advice. I’ve been doing extremely heavy lifts and now I’ve switched over to high volume training and I’ve been achieving insane results. However, it’s the focus on heavy lifting that allowed me to become big. When your max bench press is 420lbs and you do Vince Gironda’s 8x8 with 210lbs, you’ll get a lot bigger than someone who only does that with 120lbs. For reference, I’m 6ft tall and weigh 258lbs at 25% BF. The fat is a little high but that’s still of muscle for a natural which will be apparent once my cut is finished.

@@GoldenEraBookworm How in the world is anyone going to do those reps with 300 in the bench without the use of PEDs dude?

What is the weight on your lifts. I'm 6' prob 22% bf. I'm just starting to get 2 good squats for 225. Then I drop down and go to failure. For bench I can do 80 lbs DBs for 8 reps then drop down, can't even do 1 more rep at that weight. I'm getting stronger, but I feel like I'm not strong at all based on the weight I'm moving. I do 1 rep max deadlift of 315 then drop to 225 and go to failure. My real question is how are you only 25% bf at 258? My belly fat would be hanging down very low. If I'd want to go down to 10% I'd have to be maybe 160 or a little less.

@@Bigelite094 Hey bro thanks for your questions. I'll answer the stats one first lol. When you have more muscle, you can 'get away with' carrying more fat on your body without it looking utterly unseemly. I presume you weigh about 190lbs? If you pack on just 40lbs of mass (30lbs lean tissue) in the right places, even though your BF is the same, you'd look more muscular than fat. In terms of my other lifts, they're not proportionally comparable to my bench, but my 2RM squat and 4RM deadlift are 495lbs. In terms of training, for you, I'd prioritise basic movements and gaining strength and skill in those. I'd stick to using only barbell bench, squat and deadlifts for the main exercises and I'd use calisthenics to supplement, like dips, pull ups, push ups, sit ups etc. Keep your reps 6 reps or lower and the warm up reps about 12-15. Make sure you consistently do this at least 3-4 days a week and get adequate protein and sleep. You should gain slabs of muscle in a year with this. Once you gain sufficient strength, I think that's when you'll be at a good place to transition to typical bodybuilding training. Hope this advice helps!
@nickepic18632 жыл бұрын
I can confirm this, this style of training works wonders. I started to use HIT training and I train in a Mike Mentzer way, and it is the best thing I ever experienced. My friends think I do steroids since I progressed in one month more than most of them in 8 months. Most of the times I train 20-25 minutes, I spend most of the time warming up and preparing for that one set to failure. Only difference is that I do 6-8 reps, and sometimes I like to superset with one more exercise in order to bring muscle to total failure. But most of the times only one exercise to complete failure is enough to trigger growth mechanism. When I say to complete failure I mean that! And I control weight all the time, my one repetition lasts five seconds and their is no jerking, only complete control because that is how the whole muscle is involved in lifting that weight. Since I train alone I like to do exercises where I can help myself with other arm in order to help myself on a positive aspect of the repetition when my strength is gone, and then I help myself lift the weight up and I do negative aspect of repetition to complete failure, and I do that until there is nothing left in a muscle. I think rest Is important thing, most people cant train every day, their body needs more time for rest and this is why we see so many people do not progress. So finding right amount of rest is important. Thank you for this video it was beautiful.

I wouldn’t say lazy at all; the Arthur jones/metzger old school approach of the complete aspect to failure takes guts and balls. Pushing that aspect well past the point where most would quit will give you results; in the same way overcoming isometrics has been forgotten, yet is a great addition to any program, the metzger approach has been forgotten yet why does that mean it is automatically suited for “the lazy?” I would be intimidated to train in metzger’s style as it was pure masochism, yet he is arguably the peak physique. Also a brilliant mind as far as what I’ve seen and heard from him. I’m going to start utilizing these aspects periodically in my own program as I liked reading this dudes comment, and forgot about the metzger books I have stashed in my closet. Jerry has fallen into a very common mistake: the idea that strength increases are definitionally made in low rep ranges. Those high rep studies specify proximity to failure. If you approach/reach failure regularly in ANY rep range, you'll have to add weight to the bar over time. Even if you are doing 25 rep sets, YOU ARE GETTING STRONGER. Granted I have gained exponential size gains especially recently with me gaining 8lbs of mostly muscle to go from 177lbs to 185lbs from may to the beginning of june. But my strength is lacking as I know for a fact that i can get REALLY STRONG (I can only bench a max of 225 and squat 315 for 5 and barley press 90lbs for reps on military press) My father was almost able to bench 405 and was able to Military press behind the neck 315lbs for reps. So my goal right now is to do what i have been doing for gaining muscle which is what steve reeves did ( aka building where he is constantly in a state of building) and try to keep on working up to 215- 220lbs at 6ft with a 29in waist.

Jerry is talking pretty much about the principals of the MAX OT TRAINING SYSTEM, which both Natural Bodybuilder's, Skip La cour and Jeff Willet did. It's where you work at 85% 1rm for 4-6 reps, and low volume sets, and pure compound movements, and resting 2-4 minutes between sets. You recruit the fast twitch white type 2b fibers. Reg Park, was also within in this method, but it was called 5 sets of 5 reps. Not really much of a difference. But it works GREAT AND VERY FAST!!!!!💪🙂👍

Really appreciate these conversations, man, you're doing such hard work out there. It's really good to see people like this, and the results they got, especially with a HIT style of training. It's hard to believe they're natural, given how we live in an era that's just flooded with gear use. Having said that, I do see some people in the calisthenics community, like That's Good Money's channel, for example, and some of them do kind of look somewhat similar (much less leg development, of course). I think we need to remind ourselves that it is possible to be strong, big and natural, like okay we might not be able to be as lean and still hold that size, but we shouldn't be black pilled by gear users. I will say, I very much doubt he was 6% bodyfat, in the photo shown, but that's no criticism. As naturals, we don't need to sit under 10% to look amazing.

I'm age 66, began bodybuilding at age 15 in 1971, and am still bodybuilding fifty years later. Regrettably, whether someone chooses to train naturally/drug-free or to train using drugs, what ultimately decides anyone's potential maximum lean mass is GENETICS. Variables such as bone thicknesses, muscle-belly-lengths, the number and distribution of muscle fiber types (especially Type II, the type which can increase in size substantially), number and distribution of androgen receptors (which determine how readily the body utilizes testosterone and testosterone derivatives), neural efficiency (the percentage of fibers in a muscle which contract at once, affecting strength), and others, are set at birth by genetics. With proper training, proper nutrition, and time, almost anyone can reach his maximum natural muscle mass potential, optimizing his genetics...but no one can naturally exceed the mass limits set by his genetics. To exceed natural mass limits requires anabolic steroids and other growth drugs; but even response to drugs is determined by genetics, with some responding much better than others to identical cycles of dosages and types of PEDs. A few, such as Brainum (and the pictured George Eiferman, 1948 AAU Mr. America,from the pre-steroid era), are born with genetics which respond exceptionally well to progressive training, giving them the potential for outstanding size; the top physiques, whether drug-free or drug-using, are among those few. Most are born with genetics which respond moderately well; they can add significant lean mass naturally , but not as much as someone like Brainum. A few are born with genetics which respond very poorly (fitness researchers term them "non-responders"). They can add little lean mass, despite doing everything correctly. Some among them even have little response to anabolic steroids. Consistent proper training and proper nutrition (which each individual eventually has to customize to his own specific genetics) for at least three consecutive years (after finishing puberty; until finishing puberty, the body can respond to training, but won't respond as well as it can), will enable anyone seriously committed to maximizing his muscle-mass potential to achieve 90-95% of it. Point is, that NOT everyone can even become as big, naturally, as Brainum, despite dedicated proper training, eating, and years of persevering. Each can become as big as his genetics allow, but only the relatively few with genetics like Brainum, and like the pre-steroid era champions such as Eiferman, Jack Delinger, Steve Reeves, Clarence Ross, John Grimek, Dan Lurie, and Melvin Wells, can develop outstanding lean mass. After all...if everyone could, then no one would be "outstanding"...
@dtm40712 жыл бұрын
The people who cry the most about 'Genetics' are the ones who have never built much muscle. If people stopped following 'hardgainer' routines and actually put the work in they'd realize it's an excuse. Funny, When I was doing HIT people said I had poor genetics, When I started using an 'overtraining' steroid routine people told me I have great genetics, laughable. Do the work.
@joesantus16632 жыл бұрын
@@dtm4071 I fully agree that "poor genetics!" is used too-often as an excuse to avoid serious, intense, consistent progressive training. Through my fifty years in bodybuilding, my advice to beginners has been, "You can't know what mass potential you have until after you've given it your all for about three consecutive years; don't complain about 'poor genetics' until you can honestly say you've given 101% for three years." And, I also agree, that "hardgainer'" has become another excuse to avoid hard training; really, gains happen slowly and only through intense, consistent training for almost everyone, so in a sense, almost everyone is a "hardgainer". A few people are genuine genetic "non-responders", but, as I mentioned, MOST people are very much able to add a moderate amount of lean mass by optimizing their genetics. But, the fact that it's used as an excuse to evade putting in the consistent hard work and to evade the discipline of consistent proper eating and recuperating doesn't change the fact that ultimate potential IS limited by each person's genetics.
@bernardo2904991112 жыл бұрын
I dont mean to argue obviously, but I disagree with most things you said because of my experience (even if it’s only 10 years of training, it’s “outstanding” as well). I started lifting 10 years ago at age 13 as very skinny boy, couldnt do one push up, one of those you’d look at and say “meh, he’s never going to be strong, he clearly doesnt have the genetics”, and as the years passed I perfected my diet and overall routine, to the extent that as a teenager i wouldnt drink nor party until late night, at 16 I could bench press easily 100 kg for reps with 80 kg of body weight and still had narrow bones especially in my forearms, now I’m 23 at 95 kg bodyweight with almost 50cm arms at 18% bodyfat, I dont ego lift anymore but I could easily bench 150 kg now, and never used anything more than whey, BCAAs and creatine. So for me it’s too easy to say genetics play such a giant role, I think starting from an early age did helped a lot but nothing beats hard work and dedication through the test of time, you must certainly know that more than I do, no matter your progress. I wish I can lift and train for as long as you do, Sir!

I had 19.5” arms at 5’11” and 225lbs back in the late 1970’s & 1980’s. All natural. My late Dad had 17.5” arms into his 60’s & he never lifted a day in his life. So, it is possible to get big if you have great genetics.

Growing up in the cabbibean as a kid in the 80's era, I was about 12yrs old, and my Dad who was a farmer For most of his life, at least ever since I've known him , he was about 62yrs at the time, one day as he finished taking his shower he came into the living room with just a towel around his waist, first time ever seeing my dad topless I was like now way, he was huge and muscular he was like Ronnie Coleman at 35yrs old, unfortunately I never found any pictures of him topless because he never like talking photos. Ever since that I always believed it's possible to get big without using drugs.

I don't think I've ever seen any big bodybuilders that didn't, at some point in time, try to drive up their lifts by using heavy heavy weights. Not saying that lighter weights don't build muscle better or worse, but having that strength and it transferring into the hypertrophy movements makes a huge difference.
@signs802 жыл бұрын
Best practice from what I've heard from many many bodybuilders and powerlifters is that you do the lighter weight stuff to build some mass and then you spend a month or 2 on increasing weight and lowering rep count to get the muscle up to its max strength potential, and then you repeat since you'll be lifting heavier weights than before on your lighter weight training cycles which means more stimulus and growth
@TypicallyUniqueOfficial2 жыл бұрын
@@signs80 that's one way to do it too. I've been training for 15 years (with some breaks here and there) and I've done many different programs and I can attest that many of them work well, some work ok, and some are in-optimal. Any program that has you using all repranges is the best, and occasionally training to failure for a period of time and a period of time where you don't. The only routine I haven't really messed with too much for a long period of time is rest pause, but I've read many many positive things about it.

I will do the compound exercises push-day(weighted dips, OH shoulder press, bench press) + triceps + side + side & rear-deltoid pull-day(weighted pull-up, bent-over-back-row) + traps + biceps lower-day(Squats, Dead Lifts) I will perform my reps with a 4 second eccentrics & 3 sec concentric tempo Please criticize this, suggest something better. thanks in advance, lovely video

Mike Mentzer died at 48 and his brother Ray Mentzer died 2 days later. This is the story of many body builders. The strain of going to failure is something Bill Pearl didn't believe in. He said 30 to 50 grams of protein a day and you shouldn't take more than your body can fully utilize and you hurt yourself if you do. Pearl is in his 90's and has been a vegetarian for about 70 years. He does eat dairy and eggs. He never believed in steroids or going to failure on sets. "Train don't strain. six to eight reps." After several years out of competition and winning just about every contest he entered, he came back in 1971 when challenged by Joe Weider to face Reg Park and Sergio Oliva. He blew them away winning Mr. Universe.

I’m really all for how far a person can go without steroids. And you can certainly get big without steroids. But you can’t get big, look great, and have low body fat without steroids comparatively. The drugs take your biology to another level. So when they say stuff like you can get big well duh. But how good would you look? And how long can you maintain that as you get older, the body ages, and your testosterone levels go down. You can get big. The lift weights and you can eat a lot of food and drink a lot of water and sleep a lot. But can you look like a bodybuilder? And compete and do well? Not likely without the genetics and getting started early in life. And you will always have a plateau.
