The original mufflers are NLA, but we figured out how to make an aftermarket part fit into this 356.

I was recently at a large car show (AACA Eastern meet in Hershey, PA) and saw a 356 fully restored that was for sale at about $200,000. Now I know why you're taking your time and doing this right. Keep taking it one step at a time. Cheers!

The market for these cars is a bit insane. But yes... It's probably a bit more work than another VW but the value is 10x when it's all said and done. I can't afford to drop 6 figures on one, so I'm starting with a basket case. I'm confident the car will be a blast when it's done.

I wonder if the purpose of the “muffler” is to conserve heat? Maybe they are like double wall stove pipe? I’m very impressed with your work and the progress you are making 👍

Thanks!!! I think they are there to quiet the engine noise... I'm not going to swear to it, but I've been told the cabin noise in a 356 is significant... That said, I don't know how much difference they make.

I'm amazed. You can darn near build one of these out of steel from the ground up. The fact that so many panels exist is a testament to how bad these cars rusted out!

Great progress. A real motivation for a 914 and other older projects I just can’t get committed to. Wish I had known you would be in KC. We’ve never met but the local flight opportunity still stands and I would have bought you a beer or coffee. Keep up the strong work!

I'm back and forth between CO and KC all the time. My office is HQ'd in downtown KC, so I'm in for meetings a lot. I've been pre-occupied with a few personal things and with the car the last few trips. I'll be in for the holidays at some point. I suspect you're watching CT's channel??? He's tearing into a 914 project.

@@GregsGarage my FiL is “holding “ his 914 for me. I was gonna bring it to KC(OLATHE) but it was a puking fuel. I completely rebuilt it’s Weber 46 IDAs for the 3.0L he swapped out in the 90s. Fun but has not been gone through since the swap. Too low see under it, etc. but it’s mine if I’m game. I need your inspiration! We travel a lot but if I know you’ll be here... Been considering going out that way to cycle a bit with a friend so maybe we’ll meet.

Looking great so far Greg. The heating systems on the air cooled cars has always been "interesting" Back when I had my Type3 I had to repair the heater channels on it and looked things over and decided to run exhaust tubing with fiberglass insulation around it. Figured it might hold more heat in the pipe that way. Should have looked at Porsche, might have tried using glass pack mufflers instead!
@GregsGarage
@GregsGarage 11 ай бұрын
I find it interesting the VW just used the sheet metal on the rockers as a duct, but Porsche added pipes to control the air. I suspect someone pointed out that if it's cold outside, water will condense on the warm surface, thus the rockers will rot on a VW. The sad truth is that the rockers on a 356 will rot no matter what you're doing! LOL!
@Blazer02LS
@Blazer02LS 11 ай бұрын
When I first got it I didn't understand the system and it had rotted out rockers, typical NY car. I was like, "Why doesn't this thing have heat?" Once I figured it out I decided VWs with add on heaters were a good thing! LOL

Heat exchanger?
@GregsGarage
@GregsGarage 11 ай бұрын
There will be 2 heat exchangers bolted on the motor. These mufflers are just there to quiet the engine noise coming off the motor. From what I understand, these cars are notoriously loud from the driver's perspective.
@BruceBoschek
@BruceBoschek 11 ай бұрын
@@GregsGarage Oh, I was suggesting that those were heat exchangers. I guess I didn't look carefully enough. I had an S90 back in the days and I didn't think it was particularly noisy, but I was young and in love with the car, so I guess that's not a very objective opinion. I love to see this car getting the love and care it needs and deserves. Thanks.
@GregsGarage
@GregsGarage 11 ай бұрын
@@BruceBoschek I bet your S90 had the factory heater mufflers still... Just a guess. I have only driven the 356 Roadster, so I've never been in one of these cars with a roof. After owning a VW for a most of my life, I suspect it's a similar noise level. I am going to add a little extra sound insulation in this one, just to make it as quiet as possible.

@@GregsGarage Yes, my car was imported by a Porsche mechanic who kept it stock in all ways. It was only a year old when I bought it in 1963 for US $ 4000. The Super 90 was rather special even back then and I absolutely loved it. I left the States in 1965 and it went the way of all the rest of my belongings. IIRC it was a bit louder than my 59 VW.
