It annoys me how the edge and Johnny Marr get all the credit when it comes to innovative guitarists of the 80’s and guitarists like Paul Reynolds and Stuart Adamson of Big Country go under the radar.
@AntwhaleNearfar2 жыл бұрын
Matthew Ashman of Bow Wow Wow and Warren Cuccurullo of Missing Persons as well.
@deathmetaldouglas692 жыл бұрын
Paul has OK style but he sounded like a beginner who just learned how to play some leads. Kind of a one trick pony as his rhythm playing was non-existent. People say the same about The Edge but I think he was a better player back then. Also Johnny Marr was/is far better guitarist than either of those guys. He had/has every ridiculously hard chord to play in his arsenal. He is practically a virtuoso. Start Adamson (RIP) was not virtuosic but extremely creative. Fairly technical and innovative as is his sidekick Bruce Watson who still plays Big country music to this day.
@deathmetaldouglas692 жыл бұрын
@@AntwhaleNearfar Ashman (RIP) was a virtuoso as is Cuccurillo (also in Duran Duran for longer stretch as well as Frank Zappa briefly). Thing is Matthew let us know how great he was almost every tune. Warren tried his best to cover up his advanced playing and was light years ahead of Andy Taylor (Duran Duran) although you wouldn't know it.
@AntwhaleNearfar2 жыл бұрын
@@deathmetaldouglas69 “Light years ahead”. The parts Andy created for DD were much more musically memorable and perfect for the overall sound of the band than anything Warren ever did. If you judge Paul Reynolds and Andy Taylor’s playing by how complex, fast, “mind blowing” etc they were (which it seems you are), then of course you won’t really appreciate what they did. But if you judge them based upon their ability to use a guitar to create the perfect part for a great “New Wave” tune (as I do), they were both excellent players. The irony is that people like you are why people like the OP feels people like Paul are underrated (his playing being too understated to impress those like yourself). “Difficult chords”, knowledge of music theory, technical prowess and fast leads etc are all great, but being able to play WITH and FOR a song in the perfect way is also noteworthy and something many “wow factor” guitarists didn’t and seemingly couldn’t do. Oh and PR’s rhythmic part for “Spage Age Love Song” is effin great.

When i Heard about the May 83 US festival i meant to be there to see A Flock of Seagulls & my favorite bands.... The Clash , Men at Work , , U-2 , Stray Cats , i have photos i took with a Disk Camera ....it was Heaven ...in the same camera site..... By the way , while getting on stage , the drummer from the Clash was fighting security ....the rest of the Clash went back to help him , the incident help Jones made a political-social speech before playing....New Weavers at front mix with Punks.....New Wave sounds & shields.....fashion look was new in conservative America.....God Bless Reynolds , iconic way to dance those days just like Molly Ringwald did in the Breakfast Club....film .....
@middleclassic5 жыл бұрын
Woohoo! I was there!!! The lineup for that day was The Clash (Headlining!), then Men at Work, Stray Cats, English Beat, Flock of Seagulls, Oingo Boingo, Wall of Voodoo, INXS, Divinyls. Even though I was there I must admit I remember nothing of seeing A Flock of Seagulls :-/ And that is how A Flock of Seagulls was for me and everybody I knew. Nobody I knew could get past what they wore and Paul's glasses. I know that all looks like iconic New Wave swag now, but in the early '80s they looked plain goofy to us. I just remember having no desire to see The Divinyls, probably INXS because they were so new at the time, Oingo Boingo, because every jock who wanted to jump on the "Punk Rock New Wave" band wagon was going to see Oingo Boingo. And that just ruined them for me because going to one of their shows was like going to a football game with an audience filled with chowder heads .... it sucked! And Men at Work, no explanation needed I hope, they just suck ... period. Otherwise they are all great bands! This recording has to have come from the sound board because it sounds great! Whereas this place was HUGE for those days and seemed hastily thrown together. Within an hour all the grass was trampled to dirt and dust was flying everywhere!!! I know I have pictures of us just covered in dirt and there are pictures I took specifically to show how much dirt was being kicked about. I did have a blast but it was far from an ideal environment and didn't sound that good either. Plus I saw The Clash, Stray Cats, English Beat, Oingo Boingo, all in much smaller venues here in Los Angeles. One of my most vivid memories from that day because it was so shocking was when we first walked over the hill into the venue were these 3 black dudes all spread out about 100 yards from the other yelling out "ACID! OPIUM! ACID! OPIUM!" over and over!!! I couldn't believe my ears or eyes!!! And no, I did not take them up on their offers. I drank beer.

I was at this concert. A couple friends and I took the "US Bus" (US Festival chartered bus) from UC Santa Barbara. It was so unorganized that the bus driver didn't know when he was supposed to leave Santa Barbara so we (as kids) had to go find a payphone and call the US Festival hotline to see if we could get that info for him. There was supposed to be a bus leaving every 15 minutes for 2 hours from that location but there was only us 3 and 3 other girls. It was so empty that we made a stop in Pasadena to pick up more people from that pick up zone. Because of that delay we showed up at the Festival two bands into it with the Divinyls already having played and INXS on the stage. By the time we got in the amphitheater they were probably off stage. It was probably 85-90 degrees and you could see this layer of smog between us and the stage and I got this raging headache after a few hours that, luckily, went away. On the way back to Santa Barbara (after making a drop at Pasadena again) we were the only passengers on this full sized coach and the driver didn't even know where UCSB was or where he was supposed to drop us off. I think he flagged down a police and asked where a certain lot was or something like that. I seem to recall getting back when the sun was up so we probably left around 8am the previous day and got back around 7am the next day. It was quite an adventure for us high school kids. I think that festival lost a lot of money and if there were similar issues like chartering a bus from Santa Barbara to San Bernadino with only 3 kids in it, I could see how that would happen. It was a full bus from Pasadena but still.

It's a crying shame they broke up. They all pulled their own weight in this band. Mike Score is an excellent songwriter, Ali is a fantastic drummer, Frank on his bass is awesome and Paul on that guitar! Had they not fell victim to Mike's enormous ego, they might have been still around like Depeche and U2. What a complete shame. I miss them.
