@sodasaintcommentaries4054 But what made the scene such a great character study is that EVERYONE knows that admitting he ordered the code red would sink Jessup...... EXCEPT JESSUP. After the fact, he can't believe he's being charged with a crime. He gave an order, and that's the end of it. Everything else, the cover-up, the trial is all BS to him. Kaffee cottoned onto this and was able to put Jessup in a place where he just wants to say and do what he wants, by ordering him to sit down, by treating him with no redirect, by making him feel stupid by repeating previous testimony, like a child. By then, Jessup's had enough of the crap. He just wants to say what happened and go back to being the boss. Brilliant.

Such a great movie with great moments throughout and Kaffe's "You're under arrest, you son of a bitch" was so satisfying. Great cast and so amazing to learn that Wolfgang Bodison (Harold Dawson) wasn't a trained actor before this film. No acting experience and yet Rob Reiner saw something in him before asking him to audition. Bodison's performance is one of the standout performances in the film. He really owns his character 100%.

Doesn't change anything. That was a different tack by the defense, that Santiago's death was an accident. Jessup's confession proves nothing one way or another in that regard, it only changes the responsibility for the assault. If Jessup ordered the Code Red, maybe his orders led to the rag being poisoned, or the use of an accidentally poisoned rag.

Sad but true, Colonel Nathan R. Jessup is absolutely right, no country is defended by following good morals. Because your enemy is willing to do anything you aren't and thus gets upper hand in every situation, leaving you weak and vulnerable. When you sign up as a soldier, you are giving your life to defend the country, not morals. That is the sacrafice every soldier must accept. People can't handle the truth!

No, that's not even remotely true. Jessup, while he was seeking to maintain operational excellence, ordered a hazing that resulted in a man being murdered. This was done on his orders. And then he had the audacity to try to hide it. He knowingly falsified official documents statements, knowingly committed perjury, and basically left the two men he ordered to commit the hazing hanging out to dry for murder. All of which are very serious crimes. Just because he defends the nation doesn't give him a pass to do whatever the heck he wants; by that logic, Ahab had the right to murder Naboth over a vineyard when Naboth refused to sell it to him. The correct way to handle this was to get Santiago to wash out or have him transferred where he wouldn't be a risk to himself and others, not ordering him to be put in critical condition. The only one who weakened the US that day was Jessup, not the attorney daring to tell him the truth to his face. This is Jessup projecting, not putting the attorney in his place. A guilty conscience tends to do that.

Agreed. Whilst this is a film and the circumstances made up, the threats that face a nation are often unseen and unreported but still require unpalatable actions to negate them. I’m grateful to those in the military and security services who do this dirty work knowing that they will be hung out to dry by the very people they are protecting.
