Hi, thanks, so i was wrong :P, you are totally correct ; will have a better look at the measurements next time. but i have both camera's so will see for myself in real life shooting. I looked up the sensors; i think i totally forgot about it when ( or why) buying the D40x, perhaps there were 'other' reasons .... Sony ICX-453-AQ (CCD) D40 , D50 , D70 , D70s Sony ICX-493-AQA (CCD) D40x , D60 , D80 , D3000 I don't have the D70 but i shoot from time to time the D50, as it can handle the older AF lenses, i think due older firmware / hardware involved the output from the same chip ( at same reading) is different, the D50 produces more contrast in JPEG files, and shows less DR . If we look at the DXO measurements it does show the D40 is better at dynamic range and tonality. ( in RAW) It's really funny to see they just seem very small differences in measurements, but I can vouch for the output of the D40. Not sure what Nikon did but they squeezed every ounce of that sensor. Some time ago I came across a picture of a whale coming out the water by Lance Kinney , he mentioned he used a 18-55 kit lens, on a rocky boat at iso 1600 , and to be honest this file can still be used as a wallpaper or print :P

Thank you for your superb comment! Indeed, sometimes small measurement differences can hide a big difference in image quality... I am trying to puzzle the pieces together, but likely it comes to the point of how the sensor turns out - what the team put together. You have fine cameras, I really hope to try out / own some of these classic Nikons! Cheers, Janos
