I grew up in the 1970's. The pigments on crayons used to be much stronger. It was lovely. By the 80's, it was cheaper to use less pigments and more wax. Very, very upsetting to go from a medium that had the vibrancy of oil pastels, to now a dull candle. Love your videos!

I resonate with this so much. I hated crayons as a kid (and still now, honestly) because they didn't leave the kind of coverage I wanted even if I pressed very very hard, and colored pencils on textured paper... More people have practice with crayon than probably anything else, so pushing yourself to change it up is great practice if you don't want to buy new paints like watercolor. Also being able to work with unique material is a great artist trait to have, no one can really copy your work!

I almost got held back in the first grade because of this. I was having a hard time staying in the lines, turns out I needed glasses. They told me to outline it but gave me absolutely no explanation but outline. If you're a first grader and you've never heard the term "outline" before, where do you think you put the outline? That's right! I did it on the outside of whatever I was coloring. They had a meeting with my parents and everything. I was pissed. Like, you gave me absolutely no explanation at all except to outline it and I did outline it you just didn't tell me that the outline should be inside. I was a very literal child.

For the Love of Summoning As an artist also, I love using children’s art products, especially Crayola! I do mix media so incorporating kids art supplies give me more to throw into the mix. I love pallets of kids watercolors! Most come with the same basic and few colors, but I do occasionally find some with different colors at dollar stores. I’ve even found matte and glossy watercolors. I started with them because I was broke and kept using kids stuff because I enjoyed it. I have a series called inner child art. My parents would never buy me the big box. @@PippaPPod I agree with your assessment 100%. My ex (we're still friends) just sent some dollar store watercolors for me to use after losing all my art supplies to a small catastrophe (house burnt). My preferred medium is oils and only considered watercolors for rough sketching/washes and just playing around similar to doodling. I must confess the "36-pack" she sent, as generic as it is, works wonderfully! I was duly impressed and have just received a commission to paint whales for a soon-to-be born child's bedroom, based upon my scribblings with these paints! This should be lots of fun! Gonna have stock up on those sets (my youngest son is staring because I was laughing at my phone...picturing myself doing a mural on a bedroom wall using one set after another! Lol! I used to do the same thing! I scraped it off with my thumb nail then rubbed it enough to warm it up to smudge it. It doesnt clump if you scrape the excess wax off first and dont press too hard.

Kira Doray Coloring is one of the first creative outlets we receive as children. There are “rules” according to non creatives. Pressing hard was looked down upon in my house. “Do it right or I’m putting them away!” My gramma was a crazy ass creative. I was taught to break crayons into pieces and carve into the side to create purposeful texture and shadow.... it was our secret, which is code for “your mom will kill me if she knew I taught you this.” At home my crayons were perfect, at grammas the had no wrappers, were broken into pieces and some were no longer round. Oh, and they were stored in one of grandpas tobacco tins..... it was the 60’s.

I got 850 awesome points. When I was in elementary school in the 80s my art teacher taught us a method where you color a design using pressure, then cover that design with a black crayon; again using pressure. You then proceeded to scratch of whatever areas you wished to expose with a penny then used a hairdryer on low to lightly melt the left over built up wax to create cool ass pictures.

@@kaivickers166 And to sing. I never went to kindergarten. When I got to school and heard of this magical place where you played and sang songs and did awesome art and got a social group I felt severely deprived. I was one of 11 children so it wasn't so much sharing as a fight to the death over limited resources. Think Hunger Games, but over toys and pencils and everything else.

Thanks ever so much. Wow! Why wasn’t I taught this in kindergarten. I always achieved straight A’s in math and science but as a kid, likely the only kid, who could fail colouring in primary school. Until recently I hadn’t picked up a crayon in decades. I had even forgotten the way they taste. Your excellent tutorial has raised my recent level up to a solid D. I’ve become a closet crayon artist when the laboratory door is closed and nobody can see me. However, I still have the urge to peel the paper off of crayons and have recently had an urge to eat paste. Cheers from western Canada.
