Great video, Sandy! So many KZbinrs make videos after they’ve experienced the project, rehearse what to do and say, and those are great…but it’s nice to see the initial reactions, successes and even occasionally even setbacks. It helps the rest of us to see that even the best among us can be intimidated. What makes them great is that they overcome the trepidation, and just do. Even if they’ve procrastinated a while! Thanks so much for sharing the “stream of consciousness.” 💜💜💜

Thanks for your insightful comment, Frank. That is the EXACT reason I made this video. :-) It could have turned out disastrously, but that would have been helpful to see, as well. Happy creating!

I signed up for a metal clay (silver) free seminar via the internet but didnt have time to watch at the time it aired except a few minutes (intro stuff) of the 1st class. The piece we were supposed to be able to make was beautiful it just came at a time family obligations kept me from participating both time wise and financially. Can't wait to sit down and watch this uninterrupted. 💜

Thank you for showing exactly how this clay behaves. I will be using your tips, polymer clay, the playing card idea, and practice strips when I start. Silver clay work is on a course I’m doing, so I want to watch and learn before I do it for real. I will use a blow torch. How long does it take to fire with a blow torch? How do I know when it is ‘done?’ Thank you for this video!

You have to carefully follow the directions for the particular clay that you have. If you watch part 2, you'll see me fire a piece with a torch and answer several of your questions as I'm doing so. 🙂

I’m so glad to know it was helpful, Joyce! Yes, I was intimidated, too. It was all the preparation and planning that made the difference. 🙂

thanks for the video =) the liquid you spray on the stand-a-side clay is 95%water and 5% white vinegar? If you are leaving the clay aside for only a few minutes, would you just spray water without the vinegar? thanks =)
@SandyHuntress
@SandyHuntress 6 күн бұрын
Yes, the 5% vinegar is just to prevent mold from forming. If you’re certain you’re going to be using it all in one session then it’s not necessary.

You can also spray it to with some water if you do feel it drying out as you're working with it

You could have also sprayed a little bit of the olive oil on your, and those baking sheets but not parchment paper I can't remember what they're called but those work very well with this type of clay. And if you can get a a mineral oil and mineral oil I believe that would be best. And it works well in a spray bottle. So every bit of surface you have to spray. And also with the clay you don't need to need the clay like you would with polymer. Cuz if you need it too much if he comes very pasty.....

PS. Oh yes I forgot even a small square of a piece of plexiglass works well to to also flatten out a ball of clay instead of a roller. And of course spray also with oil

I remember hearing about PMC on the Carol Duvall show back in the day. I have always been fascinated by it. Ive always wondered the best way to make an armature. That way you can use less clay for a larger piece. There are microwave kilns. They are aren’t that expensive. The only thing is that it is best to have a dedicated microwave, but you can pick a cheap one up at a thrift store.

I did look into the microwave kilns while I was researching this, but decided I wasn’t ready for that investment quite yet. Also, it doesn’t really seem like the best way to do it. As for armatures, they make a cork clay that you can use as a filler. It has to be used in a kiln, as the cork burns off during firing. If you get a chance, give it a try!

How far will the gold slip paint go? Only enough to fill the paint brush fibres lol, but seriously Thank You for this very original, unedited, honest, almost real time video on PMC3 I feel confident enough to try it now. It was so cool to see how your confidence grew as you played with it . Can’t wait for part two!! Thank you 😊

Thank you so much for your comment, Heather. 🤗What you said was exactly what I hoped to accomplish, to show for real what it’s like to try this medium. I keep watching the price of silver, hoping it will go down so I can get another package and have another go! Yeah, good point about the gold slip. Next time I have 100+ bucks to spare I’ll let you know. 😂

I can’t say for certain. Does the manufacturer say they are kiln safe? Be sure to wear eye protection when firing stones!

Like most videos on firing PMC, you neglected to show the actual firing. Also in using the olive oil, you were just a little too generous thus causing the "fresh clay" to become very sticky. Good ideas in working from polymer clay samples. Overall I give you kudos for doing this as it shows newbies how easy it is to make mistakes and recover from them.
@SandyHuntress

Thanks for the comment and the kudos, Michael! I do show the firing in part 2. 🙂
