Max McFarlin if you go to a BANH MI place and they use that electric toaster to reheat the BANH MI>> for sure it’s not a good place to eat. BANH MI should be freshly made and delivered every hour, or at least using charcoal is a better way.

In some places, they give you 2 sauces, a more foreign-friendly non-shrimpy one and the shrimp pasty one. But if you get only the shrimp one, you can put some herbs inside and squeeze a lime to balance the flavor

Cuisine is really a charm of Hanoi. Nuoc mam, mam tom or any spices are use on own ways, everything has balance flavor. it’s extremely delicate. Xoi xeo is my favorite breakfast ^^ Thank you for coming and introducing Vietnam. Enjoy your trip!

The black sticky rice cooks with black bean, the other one cooks with corn (Vietnamese corn) Bún đậu mắm tôm is just simply Rice vermicelli + fried tofu and the shrimp paste. But now we add more stuffs to that.

Really loving how down to earth you are (literally eating off the floor, with your hands, right next to a roaring traffic!) and so willing to try out the extreme flavours of the local dishes. And you've definitely got the right place for dessert - I love that old ice cream shop and their really cheap and delicious ice cream. I can never remember its name, but I just know the way there from the lake by heart. :)

OMG,now you're on Vietnamese's food university,Max.. and did you have some fun back in yesterday? Yesterday almost Vietnamese did have "Tết Hàn Thực" (dont know what is call in English,sorry) in that day,everybody in the family are united and make some "bánh trôi" (sticky-rice flour filled with brown sugar-cube) and "bánh chay" (a BIG sticky-rice flour ball filled with mungbean dump in sticky sweet soup topping with somemore mungbean and coconut) try to make some of it with the family and eat them is really fun

I converted my white friend to mam tom. But mine was mixed with Thai chilli, crushed pineapple with juice, lots of crushed garlic, and lots of sugar to balance the saltines. After you're done be ready to drunk gallons of water.

Some people have good immune, some take medicine when travelling aboard . I didn't get any problems eating street food in Asia (Thailand, Vn,China..) but I did get upset stomach in Oaxaca, Mexico when eating moles.

Yeah, you just never know really when your stomach will get upset. We all have a different microflora in our digestive tract and while generally many people may get sick in an area, it tends to be dependent on the individual.

that's the thing with vietnamese food u gotta eat it together if it got greens and sides. they got the tofu and the noodles for the texture because that sauce got alot of flavor so it will balance out the tofu and herbs and noodles. you sir got a taste bud of a man of the world *thumbs up*

I was like you could eat anything. 😂 I was surprised that you knew how to eat Bun Dau Mam Tom; putting it all together between your chopsticks. Some people call themselves backpackers but don't really know how to eat local dishes. I remember when I was in Sri Lanka, I didn't dare to eat the 7-flavour curry meal of theirs. I tried that shrimped paste and hated it but then for some reason I started craving it which is weird and so I went back to Vietnam and tried it again and loved it. So pungent and I love eating it with those round white eggplants that they pickle
