They literally only have 5 kits, including 3 Forgeworld ones. Infantry kit to make one of 3 units, an upgrade kit to make a 4th, a plastic character, a resin character, and a transport. The transport looks like it came out of a 50's Sci-Fi Spy thriller, which would be a great aesthetic basis for new models, but GW went for "wahmen stronk"

I've been active in the hobby since late 4th edition. This is the first lore change where the response from.forums and groups is to ban anyone that disagrees with it. (Be it a temp or perma ban). When the Necrons changed, primaris were added, squats reintroduced i did not see any noticable levels of people being banned for not liking the new change. But with this one, you so much as laugh react someones "conversion" of a femstode and you get a slap from the admins. This rot has been at the highest levels of online social spaces for a while, and now the corporation is on their side, the mask is well and truly off.

I think Cawl was the worst change. Cawl was worse than the Necrons by far. He took away the entire ethos of the Asimovian degeneration of science. agree. I'm honestly a bit surprised they didn't just do this at the start of 8th, my guess is that they were already nervous about a fan backlash and didn't want to risk a big drop in sales. I feel like the current media landscape is like the wave of shit sequels to great 80s movies that happened in the 90s. It was like one awful film after another, all the good IPs falling like dominos. Take existing IP with proven sales record, milk until dry with abysmal writing, piss off the fanbase and then come back in 4 or 5 years with something even worse and try to resuscitate the corpse. It takes so much effort and luck and the goodwill and love of many people to summon something like 40k into existence, it feels like some sort of dire war crime to not treat it with respect.

I'm not even as mad at the Custodian situation as i am mad at the sisters of silence getting a raw deal out of this and your already stated point about settings needing consistency. the all women order who is stuck at the hip of an order that isn't even all male all of a sudden messes with a dynamic i personally enjoyed about the two. they served as a lovely defensive line of the custodians handling bodily threats, but needed the sisters of silence to aid them with mental and immaterial threats. the male- body, Female- Mind dynamic was something i really liked about the two, even though I had wished for an expansion to the sisters of silence to the point i never needed to consider custodes. Only to see this tempest also gave them nothing new, and took away from that dynamic. the sisters of silence are already one of the more unfortunate groups in the lore, and it seems true that outside of the story they are passed over as well. it was actually funny to me when you pointed out that by claiming the custodes were always not all-male, that this duality the two had not only never existed by GW's standards as of now, but it was gone in order to point out there has yet to be a female custodian worth discussing in all this in game and real time. The sisters of silence didn't just get passed over. they got lessened by something by GW's own admission wasn't even worth a footnoting until they decided it was. don't blanks suffer enough?

The biggest change to be was a subtle or not so subtle one: their soft retcon of the Imperial Guard. Well, not a retcon as they don't always maintain the change. The guard for most of the lore were elite. They were recruited from the best of the Planetary Defence Force, militia, and gangers from hives. They were given a BS3 which signified a high level of training. They were better than most conventional Western forces, the equivalent of say Army Rangers or Royal Marines. Not the best, but better than average. When you put that metal squad of ten guard on the table: there was pride. Around when the Starship Troopers was released they started to reduce the guard to a joke. They leaned hard on they were "cannon fodder" (which tragically was always the case) but pretended they were just conscripts or random lads given a weapon: that was never the case. In fact only the best of the Imperial Guard were even allowed to leave the system. They flip back and forth currently but for me that was a significant retcon and allowed them to sneak in female guardsmen which I shouldn't have to explain is more or less nonsensical given the skill level and physical endurance the guard are MEANT to have.

For the fluff "changing", to me its always felt like there's always been an over arching theme to the setting, but the information we had (such as the Horus Heresy) has always been "blurry" and vague, then over the years GW have explained these events and ideas further. Its never really been a huge crowbar change like this where one thing used to be "X way" and now it is "Y way"

It just makes no sense to enhance women into supersoldiers. Female soldiers already cost more for less performance, why would it make sense to have a process that enhances males to supersoldiers and then spend money on a process that would allow women to bridge the gap in peak performance when scaled up to super soldier level? If it costs a planet's gdp to make and equip a custodes why soend 1.3-2x more to make a female one when the added cost could be used to further enhance a male? Makes no sense to spend on that scale to fit an ideology that doesn't exist in the setting.

Would the process of making their nervous systems equally responsive take extra steps? People underestimate how big the gulf in performance is between men and women, but take UCONN's famous Women's basketball team as an example. They are often at or near the top of Division 1 College Basketball; but they regularly get schooled by a practice team of average dudes who are also students who would NEVER make it on the men's team. The U.S. Women's national soccer/footbal team was beaten in a game by a boy's high school team. These are examples of peak female athletes not even matching up to men who aren't close to peak male performance specimens; my point is that it is arbitrary to even have a process that closes that gulf in performance.

It was a lore change that really didn't need to happen. There was nothing wrong with the lore in 9th, 8th, 7th editions, or from Rogue trader. The HH books etc etc, and all the lore before that It's done more harm than good; it's divided the community even more now. We have the Sister's of Silence, a range that needs more support. Should have expanded that to be a playable army in both 30K and 40K. More models and lore etc.... But the way GW handled this lore change was lazy to the point of no cares given. If there was meaning behind this, it shows how little they cared. We could have had Valoris, working with Guilliman and Belisarius to bring in new members of Custodes. A whole storyline, Black Library books, new models and characters for not only the Custodes but also for the Sisters of Silence. But end of the day it was lore that was fine and didn't need changing....

I’m so frustrated with being told by others that these things are a miniscule change or it’s just the times or it’s just plastic soldiers or it’s just a game. It’s like my own feelings and thoughts do not matter. And I just got to sit and accept it. Can’t retort back because there are more important things to do than this hobby. However, that said the biggest issue I have is the disregard to the lore which was what got me into this setting. I feel it is a great betrayal on GW’s part. When close friends tell me it’s time to make peace and take and accept what I have. I can’t help but feel that is like an admission of defeat. I think it was mainly a deliberate 'screw you' to Andy Chambers who left before 5th edition. The C'tan were being built up since 2nd edition. But hey, the soulless robots have 'personality' now. End of 4th edition is where my headcanon ends.

For question 1, custodes were meant to be advisors and companions as much as guardians to the emperor. They were also meant to symbolise and represent what humanity could become and achieve, considering those things I think it makes perfectly good sense that the emperor made these companions from both men and women, in that way I think it improves the custodes because they better fulfill their purpose. Apart from that yeah it doesn't change much but considering that it retcons one or two lines from older codexes and and a lack of previously mentioned female custodes (which is an issue but is very easily solved and custodes are still a relatively unexplored faction). Thats my reason for being fine with or generally positive towards the change anyways.

I truely wish Bandai would make a line of Gunpla that's in the 1:200-1:300 range with an accompanying TTWG and TTRPG ruleset they'd dominate the industry overnight

the people who keep saying the lore is always changing are annoying and ignorant, so are the people who are barely interested in warhammer hating or celebrating the change. i like the idea of the change personally as it feels natural custodes are meant to be the pinnacle of humanity each one painstakingly genecrafted, only having man misses out on the humanity part in my eyes. that said, holy shit gw handled the change poorly with their have the cake and eat it too approach, they are the reason there were no female custodes initially both model and lore and now they turn around and say nuh uh they were always a thing and no we dont have any models or lore to reflect it but should be treated as if there are. its downright obnoxious even after all of this gw shot themself in the foot telling ADB that he couldnt write female custodes since after the fact there isn't any good way to change it leaving anything feeling like a hackjob retcon i do genuinely believe there is a way to introduce female space marines (into 40k post primaris only) but as a seperate process with an outcome similar to space marines ending up for example faster and weaker that can work alongside space marine chapters e.g. a valkyrie unit for space wolves or their own chapters. but i would not want them anywhere near something like my dark angels as it goes against the faction feel, and simply making space marines but woman would break the internal logic of warhammer and worsen the faction. that said once again given how poorly the custodes were handled i have 0 faith or trust in gw to make any big lore changes at this point (edit) oh god i just saw those female space marines conversions those are awful and really offputting

You hit everything on the head , its not about GW being inclusive its about laziness. But lets face the facts , i know more people whove said "i havent given GW a cent because I 3d print all my models and download rules and codexes online". So if GW cant milk the fans theyre gonna expand to new audiences (this change was also for amazon as the community suspects). As long as they touch the marines ill be happy. That being said its kinda hard to push AS and SOS as female armies as theyre both side armies in the imperium. I think the best option is to spruce up Aldari and give more female sculpts as they need the models anyway. HH should still be gatekept though. Its lore and stories are in a decent space and GW should let it remain niche

I think there are two kinds of retcons: Breaking the lore - this is breaking the lore. There is 0 mention what so ever of female custodes and they're gaslighting us into believing it. Bending the lore - femstodes could have been handled in a more tactful way. If they said something to the effect of "Custodes used to be all male since the Emperor. The Emperor wanted first born noble males from Terra so he could have hostages (kind of like Janissaries) and a way of uniting Terran nobility , but as they've fought more across the galaxy and suffered greater attrition, the captain-general made the decision to expand the recruitment pool from all male to any biologically suitable candidate." this is a bending of the lore as nothing definitively said they couldn't be female or that they'd be all male indefinitely. This too is an insulting change, but still better than literally gaslighting. At the end of the day, 40K is what I make of it. GW owns the IP, but they don't own what I choose to acknowledge and ignore. To me, 40K is forever (lore wise) at its peak in 7th edition. At this point it is fleshed out, stories fit right, there is much more logic and sense to it and mistakes in writing can just be written off as mistakes from authors having a hard time keeping up with everything. The only people who are happy about this change are coomers who just want more "muscle mommies" on deviantart or guys who just love the virtue signaling. Women do not care about this change. There are no women in this hobby who have said "Well geeze, I really wanted to play Custodes or Marines, but since they're all dudes, I just can't get into it." It's escapism. I was not born an impoverished child on Medusa who grew up to be an 8ft. tall genetically enhanced super soldier that cut his arm off and is now more steel than flesh, I am just a guy who paints that guy, enjoys their story and on more than one occasion day dream of being that guy. Same with the Necrons or Tyranids or Chaos cultists etc. its escapism and you don't need to even be able to relate on any level with it to be able to get into it

The kind of people that liked the change are the same weirdos that have a weird type of fetish for muscle mommies, it's the reason why i just never got into 40k groups. I'm sure some people in the hobby are cool, but, people that just want to see female space marines or female custodes are the cancer part of the hobby. Thanks Macca, nice to have a more grounded view than those I have been seeing. For me, there is sufficient precedent that the slippery slope is reason enough to fight this, but it doesn't fit with the culture of the setting, nor the practices of The Emperor. It breaks immersion in the story, I have mostly given up on current 40k lore due to the Primaris being to much of a diversion from the story I sing I loved. This is another nail in the coffin of my interest in any new content GW puts out.

Having read over the codex scans there are precisely two female custodians mentioned in the book (there are others who could be but it's vague). A short two page story and a small paragraph. In both cases the character is only female because they did a ctrl+f replacement of he with she. So technically they did something but it's incredibly lazy.

I don't know. I don't think female Custodes are a danger to the narrative bedrock of the setting. I certainly don't enjoy being gaslit that "it's always been this way", but I feel that this doesn't change anything. Yes, it encourages fetish art and does not attract any women to the hobby whatsoever. Yes, it's a poorly implemented, stupid change. But in itself it doesn't affect me or the setting. It might be a foot in the door, but when that foot gets blasted as hard as this was, I don't think much else will come in.

I think there’s a bit of a misrepresentation of the fem marine fans, I’ve personally had chats with a few (irl and online) and the general consensus is that they want the sisters of battle head on a marine rather than boob armor (most would argue this is “sexist”). Obviously this doesn’t make the female space marine stance suddenly reasonable, but I don’t think most want it for fetish reasons, it’s more about the “message”

gw did the change in a short story from the perspective of the female custode in question in the blood games who was testing the imperial palace defenses and she never even reached the surface in that story! some reasonable lore with female custodes would actually be good. my main problem with it is gw are likely to use the lore change to justify further shafting the sisters of silence! outside of the space marine rhinos they have 1 and a half kits in (a custodes kit with a sister and custodes in it) and in heresy they have the 1.5 40k kit options plus a bolt pistols kit, an expensive af transport and a single heresy character series kit! there are more sons of horus hq options then there are kits in the entire sisters of silence range as a whole (last i checked). I have been wanting to have an army of them but they keep getting shafted both in the rules and models department to such a degree it is hard to justify the money it'll cost to build even if i were to 3d print them

Well, most Custodes models wear helmets, right? And given how thick their armor is you wouldn't/shouldn't be able to tell the genders apart. By introducing female Custodes, Games Workshop - A. doesn't have to make any new models and B. can get rid of the Sisters of Silence and remove them from production.

They were designed to be the emperor's Companions, Confidants and Friends who could also keep up with him during combat but the Emperor is so powerful that he reallydoesn't need bodyguards. You can then make the argument that perhaps the Emperor wanted some Female Friends.

14:32 now I assume you are vaguely Familiar with Halo, In Halo there are Female Spartans but they're slightly smaller thinner than Male Spartans. If Female Space Marines or Custodes were to be a thing you would have to make them slightly smaller and thinner to appear more Feminine. The problem is that Space Marines are Soppoesed to be Bulky Disproportionate Parodies of ehat a super soldier is. A Female Space Marine that's thinner and more lithe would look extremely out of place, same thing goes for a Custodian.
