I was a mechanic for many years, and it's amazing how many people simply never open an owner's manual. Manuals are worth their weight in gold when it comes to properly maintaining a vehicle. Not only that, but the few owners who do read manuals often find useful features on their cars or trucks they didn't even know existed! I wish more dealerships would require sales staff to at least pull out the manual and go over not only break-in procedures, but also show new car owners how to look up periodic maintenance requirements. There's usually a section dedicated to this. Thanks for the great video; you're the first person -- that I've seen -- do a video about looking up break-in and other important information in the manual.

I have about 7,000 miles on my 2022 Tacoma Sport. I have followed the advice you are are giving as carefully as I could. I recently returned from a 5,000-mile camping trip. The truck was towing a light camping trailer (1,600 lbs.) and it performed flawlessly in high crosswinds (70 mph gusts) and sleet-covered mountain roads. Steep fifteen-percent grades on sharply curving were not even close to a problem, either ascending or descending. My first truck lasted 26 years until I sold it to my mechanic for his son. I expect my Tacoma to outlast me and I will take good care of it for one of my gandkids. Love. This. Truck. !!! Good video. Thanks!!

Yeah I just bought a 2023 Tacoma four-wheel drive about 10 days ago and I have been keeping the RPMs under 2000. No heavy braking no acceleration. I thought this was for about 650 miles, but I'll go easy for another 300 since I got about 750 miles right now. I just sold my 2007 Tacoma which had $238,000 Mi. I would put it in four-wheel drive to keep it lubricated but I definitely didn't do it every month. Can't believe I got 10K for my 07

I sold Toyota in Cincinnati for about 14 years and I was careful with every new car customer to go over this procedure. For my 2023 Taco Sport purchase a few months ago, the salesman went over all these points when I took delivery. I asked about oil changes and he said the usual Toyota 10,000, however, he also suggested to possibly get it in sooner than that. He admitted that he would feel "uneasy" waiting till 10,000 at least for the first and second one. I'm getting mine in this week at 4500 for the first of two free changes they provide.

Just talked to a friend who bought a new Tacoma 4WD in 2020. He said he's never read the manual and didn't see the part about driving 10 mi. a month for the 4WD .He asked me if he should do it now or bring back it to the dealer to see if they can lubricate what need to be lubricated. I told him I didn't know but i would be worried about wrecking something doing it now after 3 years so i'd probably take it back to the Toyota Dealer where he bought it.

My friend just called me about not putting his Tacoma in 4WD 10mi a month. The service dep. at Toyota told him not to worry since it was only 3 yrs old it wouldn't be a problem because all the parts are moving getting lubricated while driving so he would not be screwing up anything and just put it in 4WD and drive for a couple of miles. Now here's something weird. In my 2019 manual it says under ..Four Wheel drive usage frequency..."You should drive in 4WD for at least 10 mi.a month. " I just noticed that underneath there is a WARNING...Driving on DRY and hard surface roads in 4HI or 4LO position may cause drive component oil leakage, seizure, or other problems resulting in an ACCIDENT.. WHAT !!! Is this passage in your owners manual...Hasn't snowed where I live for 2 yrs. Where the hell are you supposed to drive ...

@@vyger6336 Not long ago I bought a 2010 Tacoma and noticed the same thing in the owner's manual. What I decided to do is take it out once a month to a stretch of gravel road (that provides some slippage) to engage the 4WD. Before taking any sharp turns, I will switch it from 4H to 2H while moving (under 62 mph) and switch it back to 4H once the road straightens out again. Doing this will also keep the actuator functioning well.

The truck may not say anything, but it knows when it's in 4 wheel drive on dry pavement. Regardless if both axles are geared the same and the tires are the same size, there is some minor discrepancy in final gearing by the time the rubber meets the road. The transfer case is going to be what suffers. It may take a while, but dry pavement will wear hard parts and chains.

Well crap, I just bought one last week and I have already towed a trailer lightweight trailer and only had a tiller on it to take the tiller to the shop. Also, I have had to really gun it merging onto the interstate like 4 times wide open. I have 400 miles on it now and hope I haven't damaged it in any way because I plan on trying to put 400k miles on it. Another thing is it had 170 miles on it when I picked it up at the dealership. I had to order it because they didn't have what I wanted on the lot and I think they drove it in, not sure, so I have no idea what it saw in that 170 miles. Love the truck so far and plan on modding it quite a bit bumper, grill, l lights, and switching the air filter, spark, and exhaust system for more power and better gas mileage. I wish my salesman would have told me these things before I went out and did them. At least I haven't had it over 80 yet, lol so what exactly have i done to my taco by gunning it 4 times and hauling a light weight trailer with a tiller to the shop 60 miles there and back?

Hey Rob. The worst thing about the 4x mode on asphalt and turning, is actually the gears more so than the tires. This causes binding on the gears, because when you turn, the tires rotate at different speeds because of the circle they make. The outside of the circle tire spins slower than the inside tire. This causes a great deal of binding and damage to the gears. That is the real reason it is recommended to only drive on a surface that allows for tire slippage.

@@JoelRodriguez-bf3jb , you can, as long as your going in a straight line the entire time and only in 4Hi. Turning the truck left or right causes binding in the gears of the differential. Also best if under 50 mph. Simply click it into 4Hi a couple of minutes, click it out, repeat a couple of times. Again, always going straight forward, no turning.

I was curious, I have a 2022 TRD off road with a manual transmission. When I am going through extended stretches of highly variable off road conditions that periodically require 4-Lo, am I okay to just leave it in 4-lo even if it spans a few continuous miles of travel? As a younger.. never did any of that! Definitely broke my 2020 in correctly, even changed my oil at 3k. Just hit 10k and she's running smooth. I do agree it is important if you're going to keep the truck. Mrs LB20 says hello ... still misses the blue unicorn.

I asked the service department regarding heavy towing with my 2022 Tacoma near Max capacity. The service guy said that he did a lot of towing, so coming from a good source that understands the Toyota and also Towing in general. He said with ETC on keep the gear shifter in the S position for local driving. On the highway at cruising speed it's okay to switch into the D position and let it go into overdrive. Back to S when off the highway and there will be speed fluctuations. For going downhill he said to keep it in S and let the engine do some of the braking. It is designed for engine braking. Pulse the brakes as well. He basically said to split the workload between engine and brakes for going downhill. I also verified that the gear shift in the S position is a gear limiter. Not a gear selector. It does not let it go above the selected gear but it will go below. They probably have some safety overrides. We were having a discussion about this in another video and I wanted to give an update after talking to the service department.

@@RobMotive There should be a limited speed for each gear. 4-low is typically not much more than a crawl to 5mph. Where high could be up to 50 mph. I was just surprised the manual didn't specify which mode to run 4x4 in. Thanks for the video!

the part about engaging your 4 wheel drive for 10 miles once a month.. I think that they mean 10 minutes and drive it around for that much time.. 4 high.. 4 low is very slow and you will not be able to drive that around for 10 miles.😁
