First I'll say I'm not a professional but have had many, many dogs over the years because I always had multiple dogs at once, which is a lot of toenails! I wish you had mentioned that, with the grinder, one shouldn't hold it to the toenail for more than a few seconds because it will heat the nail up and potentially burn the dogs quick. If the dogs nails have gotten longer, take a small amount off, then go to the next nail through all four, (or five if they have dew claws) then go back to the first that was started with till you have them down to best length. All my dogs were nail clipping shy after I let vets (not one vet, we moved a lot) clip them and they cut into the quick, which caused issues with clipping after ward. The grinder was a welcome tool as my dogs would actually be napping lying on their side by the time I was done! It was easier than the clippers if they had dewclaws as well because of the angle they grow at. It really didn't take much to get them used to it, I started by just putting the tool, not the grinder, on the bottom of their foot so they felt the vibration along with the noise. I think the vibration is similar to a foot massage for them, actually. For my dogs with longer hair, I'd carefully clip it off the area around the nail so it didn't get caught, or push it back away with my fingers while grinding with the other hand. I never needed to use treats but they did get one after I was done! Thank you for these videos, they are very informative😀

Nice to see this highlighted. I'm another person who cannot use clippers on the dog. I spent an entire YEAR trying to condition/counter-condition my dog to let me clip her nails and got NOWHERE. My dog would absolutely freak out any time we started the process no matter how long I took to get her relaxed and make it nice and get her consent, etc. When it came to the actual cut. . .no. Wasn't happening. In the end, I had to call it quits and instead got myself a dremel. We started slow. Let her just get used to the device while off. Let her sniff it. Let it touch her. Let me take a foot and touch it to her toes. Then we turned it on and started that again. It really did not take long at all. (I was prepared to spend a week or so getting her used to it. It took us less than 20 minutes.) I was able to get her to lie on her side calmly and relax while I worked on one nail. Now, a couple years later, she actually enjoys nail time because she can just lay on her side and get treats for me hunching over her feet for awhile. Sure, it takes longer (especially if I have to play catch up. . .:P) but it's at least a relaxing time for both of us. I still only do one or two paws at a time - depending on how long she's happy to lay there for me. . .but that's fine with me.

Elentarien thanks! It gives me hope. Just bought a Dremel type grinder. It's very quiet and I just started to get her used to it. I didn't let her sniff it when off. I'll do that too at your suggestion. She's only 6 mo. old so I've got time.

I am. Back getting my girl to use Dremel. I started this a long time ago. She would have it. After about a week of this process and her nails getting longer. I figured I would go to the scissors. She tolerates them. I do em while she’s laying on her table. She has a mix of. Black and some white nails. I have had some bad luck with the black nails. I learned how to do them and how to tell if your getting closer to the quick. I have cut her quick 2 times. Just recently . I feels so. Terrible and I hug her and apologize over and over. She has so must trust in me that I am going to go back to the Dremel no matter how long it takes. My older dog has all black nails. He doesn’t mind the Dremel. I have 3 lol. I’m going back to the first one that is less aggressive for my girl. She deserves better than a quick cut. I don’t want her to fear a pedicure one bit. I was able to teach her to lay on her table for brushing every night. Hopefully she will take to it also. It’s awesome your girl likes em.

I was able to trim my German Sheperd's nails with scissor clippers myself up until he was 8 months old. I took him to a groomer and she trimmed his back nails but said he went nuts when she tried the front ones. She said he flopped around like a fish on the table. Since then, I can get one here and there, but he growls or tries to mouth my hands when I'm holding the clippers. I use a Dremel for my 3,other dogs, but as soon as I turn the Dremel on around my German Sheperd, he wants to chase it or bite it. I'd like to see a video introducing an uncooperative dog to a Dremel.

I find that turning noisy or vibrating things on, but not touching the dog, helps the dog get used to the sound. Also, place your hand on your dog and the turned on device on or near your hand so they can feel the vibration, but not feel the device. I also let my dog see me using something on me, like my electric toothbrush, and they see that I am not harmed. Eventually, touch your dog's nail with the device for a moment and then take it away. They will get used to it not hurting or harming them.

Also, I have a very large pet pig, Aaron,, that I've raised since he was a few hours old, and he'll lay down and let me tell his hooves any time I want. It’s funny showing off how your pup doesn’t really respond to the sound of the grinder. I’ve apparently gotten mine so well conditioned for nail grinding that both of my greyhounds get excited when I pull it out. They have made nail trimming so so easy. In fact, I do tend to run into a problem: When I’m working on one, the other gets jealous. I had to intentionally get a smaller dog bed for this process because one would try to squeeze in on the bed with the other, making the work more difficult. This is really good info. I came here to see more info about clipper nail trimming. I’ve used grinders for years, but I’m curious if they would enjoy clippers better. The one thing that I found missing here is info on positioning the clippers on the nail and why. I’ve heard and read that if you don’t position it correctly, it can cause pressure and pain on the nail. Or if this is less of a concern, it’s still not mentioned. Does it actually matter? I’m probably going to stick to using the grinder overall. I use a high quality tool grade grinder (Milwaukee, with 60 grit Dremel compatible bands) because Dremel uses pretty terrible batteries with their pet nail grinder product.

It really depends on your dog and their temperament. Some dogs are just too scared to use either while they are awake. They need the help of a professional groomer or the vet in these situations. But if they are willing to let you use the clippers it really depends on what the dog will tolerate. Some dogs do not like grinders but do fine with clippers. Then there are some that do better with grinders. The vet uses regular clippers on mine.

Her last foster, a calm elderly couple on a farm, said, you have to put her to sleep to do her nails. She had tried to bite me when i tried to softly introduce a brush. I would hate to see this dog not get groomed. FYI when she tries to bite... is is just a scare off action, not to wound. I remain calm . She knows over 10 word commands. Smart dog. So accurate about using the nail guard. Every time I used it I ended up hurting her and getting a bloody nail. And I feel so awful. Yes I do better not using it. I use cat clippers and a smaller grinder on my chihuahua. Now I know what I’m doing wrong with the guillotine. I try but I didn’t like how difficult it was, I was holding it wrong. Mostly I use a grinder it’s the most tolerated. I have Anatolian Pyrenees so typical dog clippers aren’t strong enough for their nails so we only drimmel. I tried a groomer but they ended up creating so much splintered bleeding terrified dog damage it took me months and months and many KZbin videos learning to nail trim to get my big baby ok with it. After a year we’re good enough but his nails are still always a bit long. I wish more vets and groomers understood that breeds like his has harder denser nails and you can’t just grab a paw and start wacking This was soooo very very helpful!

What do you do when your dog pulls away, fighting until she's free? At 1st I could nip 2-3 nails just enough to take off sharp point while sleeping but then she's up and gone. So I bought a grinder and for the first few days, I introduced, treat, sat it beside her. She was calm until i reached for her paw and she's like, ohhhh no you don't and she was gone!! I've given her Benadryl and even though she was relaxed, as soon as I took a flashlight to look for quick, she fought and pulled away like a Tasmanian devil until she could break free. She's almost 5 months and they're getting too long sharp. After my son's dogs vet just "chopped off" half her nails in a matter of seconds. They were split, rough and I was surprised they weren't bleeding. So I bought a grinder. Coaxing with peanut butter she's fine. But I need serious help with my pup 😩

Where can I purchase a nail clipper for my dog his nails are like claws😢

You would laugh at me but first I would say I never let anyone else clip our dogs nails for the simple fact I didn’t want them getting cut in the quick. That would hurt and I didn’t want to have a scared panicking dog to have to deal with for a looooog time after. So most of our dogs were month’s old or older. All GSD’s. There was one we got as a pup at 7 weeks old. Especially with that one when young I made it a point to play and handle their feet. Then when we got to nail trimming time I’d get an ash tray and the large human nail clippers. Their nails were basically all black and as such it is a problem to see the quick. What I would do is using those nail clippers; work my way back and forth down each side of the nail till I could see I was getting close to the meat or nail bed. That was far enough. Later I got a battery operated grinder that I’d use with the guard cover off at the end of clipping to touch up any sharp edges. Never had to fight with the dogs doing this. No panicking either. They would just lay on the living room Rug. When we were done they knew the test. I’d send them to walk on the kitchen vinyl floor. No clicking any more when they walked. Then it was some good treats. Meat jerky, weiner’s or cheese. Something they really liked. I had a couple instances where one got a cut foot and another a broken nail that was bleeding. Both dogs were really good as they got neosporin on the owies with. Large bandaid; then gauze wrap and good tape jobs. They wanted to start to pick and got told no. They left those on for a day or two. When they got them off they got packaged up again so they were covered long enough. The thing is I think they understood we were trying to help. Probably because of knowing or understanding the toe nail trimming wasn’t hurtful. Best thing is start teaching them young.

Does using a file help to shorten the quick so you can cut or clip the nail shorter? What is the best method to shorten the quick?

The quick is the blood vein. That cannot be shortened. I thought this video was helpful in explaining. Grooming By Rudy How To Cut Black Nails | Locating The Vein

You can recede the quick by trimming more often. Anywhere between every couple of days and to every few weeks can work.

I believe trimming because I started working in the salon that don’t use clippers unless the dog is scared of it. I observed that 95% of the dogs vein are always very long

Also if you hold the grinder too long it will heat up the nail and hurt the dog that way. Be careful guys.

I use a nail clipper first and when I’m done, I’ll file her nails by hand 🤚 I don’t own a grinder, a metallic nail file works fine for us :) that way I don’t need electricity to do it because we spend much time in nature camping ⛺️

Depends on what your dog is willing to tolerate. Some dogs hate grinders. Other dogs do not mind them. Some dogs are so sensitive about having their feet touched neither work and have to be put to sleep temporarily to get their nails trimmed.

what model Dremel is recommended? I found an affordable price for the 7300 on chewy, but I already have a corded one. is there a large difference in noise, vibration, or power between the cordless pet model and a corded unit?

Be aware that the grinder can generate a lot of friction HEAT, which is PAINFUL for the dog. You need to take more pauses as it gets closer to the quick. You can try grinding your own fingernails and feel for yourself how quickly the heat permeates through the nails.
