Hello, how are you suppose to trim up, down, left and right on a tiny pup’s nails? they’re so tiny... Should I just make one cut and change it when they start to grow as he grows?

What to give for PAIN in case we touch that quick? Coconut flour ok to stop bleeding, or just Cornstarch? Can you list "high value" rewards? HOW do I CALM DOWNNN her when she's completely in panic, squealing and squirming from anticipation alone, ... the click sound and the going slow TRIGGER her... BUT I HAVE TO SEEEE what I'm doing? How do I HOLD HER DOWN, is there a thing I can sit her on? Anything??? Drummel takes ages...

I have been trimming my dogs' nails since I was a teenager and I have learned ALOT. I have an 11 year old white German shepherd who I have cut the quick on more than once! It IS a dramatic experience, and I have had to smother him with love to overcome the guilt I feel. He has always forgiven me, and moments later it's like nothing ever happened, because out of the hundreds of times I have trimmed his nails, it is a rarity that I have clipped a bit too far. He knows that, and he is desentized. He is the best dog ever, and he has taught me everything I know about raising a well-behaved and happy dog. Obviously, if it is something you are very uncomfortable with doing, then pay a professional. Personally, though, I find it very rewarding to put that time and energy into building trust and loving on my pooches.

Thanks for a very useful video. My only question is what is the best way to align/hold the dog for getting his rear feat? It would be great to see a wide angle shot of that, then a close-up of his toes as they are trimmed. It seems like the front feet you can pull forward easily; but the rear feat I'm not sure how to pull them (dog sitting, standing, whatever). Thanks.

Thanks! My Shepherds I trimmed from pups & ok fine with, didn't love it, but not an issue. Now I have a mix shelter dog, was 3 when I got him, 5 now, and he still gets stressed about 'stuff' easily, he's gotten much better! Lots more confidence. He had been adopted twice, returned, for being aggressive, I found him to just be scared, figured, had a half grown shepherd who bit me several times out of fear, until I understood why, after I got it, she never bit me again, not aggressive, scared! Anyway...Bogey ok with front paws, still working on his back paws, often, one nail every few days, whatever works, patience is key, oh, he's never bit me hard, had to teach him how much pressure is okay. So he gets stressed, or I do, we stop. Thanks for heads up on the scissor clipper guide, never tried it until Bogey, I just do the tips of nails, don't want to muzzle him for a groomer, stress him out, so will keep clipping away at it. Thanks again!

I got really lucky. As a first time puppy owner I somehow completely missed that this was a frequent thing I have to prepare my puppy for. However, I had been cleaning his paws after every single walk and have been positively reinforcing that with a little peanutbutter (up to 3 times per day) . Now I snip one or two nails in that daily routine and while he does not love it, it also isnt a particularly noteworthy thing for my puppy.
@lorivattes54755 жыл бұрын
If you cut the quick, you can also use ordinary kitchen flour. I learned this when I was cutting my malteses nails and I had to call the emergency number to find out what to do. Just keep packing the nail with the flour. I usually leave the flour on for awhile to make sure it stops. Then you can rinse the paw or give the dog a bath.

Dog keeps looking at her like "Hey, get away from me with those things!" :D I always leave this part to the experts as I've never had the courage to clip my dogs nails.
