1. Drums - In your face/Up close. Usually keep these sounds dry to have that "close mic" sound. 2. Main sound/Counter Melody - This depends on the beat but try and keep these sounds "in the middle". Might add some light EQ/Reverb/Delay to keep that "Mid Mic" sound. Again this depends on the beat. 3. Secondary/Little sounds/Ear candy - These sounds can have that "Far Mic" sound. Keep these in the back. Adding Reverb and Delay will help these sounds sound like they're in the distance. This will help out with keeping the beat sounding 3D. This is how I would break things down. But Every beat is different. This might not apply to everything.

Another thing i learned from listening to NIN is how you can make more complex just by having it panned to the left/right on top of using depth. It almost sounds like the sound is coming from a corner of the room.

Always some new gems to learn. It never occurred to me that cutting the highs increases the perceived depth of a sound (normally I would drop the volume of a sound I don't want to necessarily apply reverb on). Undoing depth with plugins is some next-level stuff.

At 6:15, my take: I think the average listener will struggle to hear that whistle. Cuz it's in the same freq range as the bells. I think you should pan it slightly to the side to give it it's own space, OR use Stereo Enhancer to carve out more space for it OR you pitch the whistle down to it'll be more audible. This is just what I feel, but then again what do I know, you're the teacher lol Great video man

My goodness! You are truly a mind reader. 🧠📚 I was going through my new omni patches yesterday that I bought over the weekend and taking notes on potentially amazing transition noises and soundscapes to give my beat more dimension, but didn't fully know how to go about it without it growing into a monstrosity! 😅
@kumlebsi3 жыл бұрын
First of all: Thank you for the great videos. And the first point of your Video (get's in the way with the Artist) is the reason why I love mixing the Artist as well. I have often times problems to see where I clash with the voice in my beat, without the voice. And for the reverb stuff: If I want something to be in the background (dimensional) than I often use three reverbs, a short room reverb for the presence, a large room or small hall reverb and a really wide and big reverb. Afterwards I take out the original so that just the reverbs are left over.

Thanks, Navie. Awesome videos. Thanks for sharing the concept of hi/lo frequencies in regards to depth. Ever consider doing a beat review? Like maybe once a week or once a month, let a follower submit a beat and you constructively critique it? I just think it would provide a lot of learning potential for some of us still trying to figure it all out.

What about samples that you want to leave the low AND highs in and up for? For example, with the lows being piano, and highs being vocals, I'd like to keep the piano up and in front, but without the vocals being too drowned out. I usually just use Fruity Parametric EQ 2, is there perhaps a better, preferably free, EQ'r that I should use? Or is that not the problem, and it lies elsewhere? Lol. Should I try to separate the vocals from the rest of the sample? Thanks, Navie, you always seem to scratch that current itch!

I use a lot of subtle saturation across all of my tracks / busses to help make my mixes more cohesive... but I never considered that they also have the effect of drawing distant elements more to the front by increasing their high frequency presence. I think it still USUALLY works contextually, but this is definitely an important consideration that wasn't even on my radar. Might be a low-key savior on some of my mixes. Thanks Navie.
