Usually only people in their twenties/thirties can achieve this kind of intensity. By the time you're in your forties and upwards, it's more like, "Okay, Baby, don't let the door hit you in the butt on your way out..." But I agree, GENIUS.

I was in the audience for this. We had no idea who Alanis Morissette was (I don't think anyone did at this point), and I remember being terrified by the intensity on stage. It was loud, angry, and passionate as can be, and watching this now, I realize I witnessed an epic musical performance. This is awesome, and I wish I had been able to appreciate it at the time, but I'm not sure Alanis wanted it that way. I think she wanted to scare us. She did.

It's just that, often we wd go back there to do stuff and band members or managers wd a lot of times keep our time limited back there and other times we were made to feel like we were interrupting a band meeting or something. And then they would go on stage and they wd let us back there to take out trash or whatever. But she was cool. Talked w us and stuff. Never acted like she was royalty like some of the others.

I just have to echo everyone else's sentiments about the rawness of this song. She performed it so soon after the initial "influence" that you can see the emotional volcano of eruptions coming out. Unbridled anger, resentment, sadness & betrayal to the point where she was almost crying while belting it out. Her facial expressions, body language & tone of voice say it all. That was no act. Damn, that was awesome! When art imitates life to this degree, how can you not be awestruck? By far my favorite Alanis song.

Yup. I didn't watch Letterman every night, but was watching it that night, and it transfixed me. I was glued to the screen--I'd never seen such raw anger in a musical performance. Of course looking back at it all these years later as the father of a young woman that is about the same age she was then, all I can think is: WTF did you expect was going to happen when you shacked up with a guy who hasn't married you and hasn't committed to having children with you? Duh... The poor girl needed some brothers and a father who would have spotted the dude as being bad news... But she made a butt-load of money out of being dumped for a younger woman, so it didn't turn out all that badly for her.

Absolute goosebumps. The band performance, energy and emotion is on another level here. This was always such a "heavy" song - and this live performance really shows just how vocally and musically intense "You Outta Know" truly is. I was headbanging in to this in 1995 like it was a metal song.

I’m a drummer and this was the first time I noticed Taylor Hawkins. I remember talking to other drummers after this show and we were all talking about this fucking blonde kid playing drums for Alanis Morrisette and who the hell was he? He came out if nowhere. We could all recognize that he was a Stewart Copeland guy for sure. He just killed it in this band. And I never liked his drum tone more than I did when he was playing with her. Just that CRACK of the snare. RIP

@@danman6669 Well "pop" has been shorthand for 'popular' so it's kind of a chicken v. egg dilemma. And "Jagged Little Pill" is not only one of the top selling albums of all time, but you couldn't walk 20 feet in 1996 without hearing at least two of its songs on MTV/radio/etc. So what's amazing is, had it never broken big, it could have been an 'underground' record. But it broke. "bigly" in fact.
