Best version of the musical and it ain’t even close

You can definitely hear the budget that went into orchestrating the music here. Certainly far exceeds one's expectation for what Peanuts could be at that point in time.

This album was a "prototype" thrown together by Clark Gesner. The actual "off Broadway" album did come out later that was very similar, but with additional songs and pretty much the same cast. Check out the original OB album online.

R.I.P. Orson Bean. Also interesting to hear these full, lush orchestral arrangements, which contrasts with the minimalist approach the original show took (that score is nothing but piano, percussion, and bass).

When I was about 5 my mother bought this for me, knowing how much I loved Peanuts, but I didn't want to play it. Perhaps I was afraid to hear the Peanuts gang as real people rather than the cartoon characters I loved, or I just wanted them to stay cartoons. Well, one day when I was in the tub, she played it on my tinny little carry-all record player (remember those?) to see if it would pique my interest. It didn't, and she gave it away to my school's white elephant sale. Six years later my babysitter and I watched the musical on TV, and then I fell in love with it, got the TV cast album for Christmas, and have treasured these songs ever since. And I love this original version now, especially its lush, professional orchestral arrangements. (Indeed, "Happiness" does sound very "adult," which may have turned me off at 5.) Thanks for bringing this back! And what great sound quality!

Oh my gosh. Those embryonic versions of 'Facts' and 'Kite' are glorious... it's truly amazing hearing how some of my favourite songs really began...

Even though he was older by this point, Orson Bean is a great Charlie Brown because he just perfectly captures the utter hopelessness and self doubt that Charlie Brown has in the comics

This is SO much better than any other recordings I’ve heard of these songs particularly the versions for the 1985 animated special which were often shrill and badly mixed. Here the songs are delivered with soul and humor and restraint and genuine voice acting. I particularly enjoyed track 8-it’s pensive and hilarious- and the much jazzier, more genuine sounding, version of Suppertime. Unlike other renditions of this musical the sentiment here is cynical not syrupy. Mendelson and Melendez should have just used these performances in the cartoon.

I love how the opening song sounds with this big orchestral arrangement. I wish they had gotten two female singers, I would have loved to hear it sung by the later two male two female group
I ONLY JUST REALISED THE LAST BARS OF "THE KITE" ARE A REPRISE OF "DOCTOR LUCY". Oh my gosh. I'd never heard "Dr Lucy" before, it's interesting how that motif is left in "The Kite" even though the track it originates from wasn't used after... And the melody of "My Blanket & Me" was used as continuities in the animated special even though the song itself wasn't used... My word this is *_fascinating_* to listen to.

Clark Gesner was a genius when he came up with these simple tunes and demo-ed them for Charles Schultz. What's even more interesting is the similarities of this album to the (1967) Off Broadway album. Some of the same artists appeared in both. I remember seeing that play (first run) in New York a long time ago; Wow; brain freeze!

@@spetragl Bill Hinnant, playing Snoopy, was the sole performer on the original 1966 album to reprise his role in the 1967 stage musical. He also performed the role in the abridged televised version of the show which was broadcast on NBC in 1973.

Skip Hinnant was also a member of the "Sha Na Na" style Fictional Quintet called "Phyllis and The Pharaohs" on "The Electric Company." Best known for the participation of Miss Rita Moreno and a guy named Morgan Freeman at the time. Hinnant also played a very cleverly named inside joke TV Detective that I took DECADES to get the pun on: "Fargo North, Decoder!"😂🤦♂️🎤🎼B.W.
This is the best rendition, as far as being close to what I heard on record, but I'm thinking now this is the correct cut and tilt was just the lack of fidelity I remember from listening to this on vinyl. I bought it from a goodwill for like 25¢
