I completely agree with the idea that many heritage and amekaji enthusiasts arent dressing well. If you take a look at the raw denim subreddit, or GYW subreddit, or even fedora lounge, youll see that many users are only obsessed with that one piece of their outfit and seem to disregard the rest. And they still may not have a proper fit on that one item either. But I think it’s valid for people to appreciate the craftsmanship, the details, and the aging of just their boots/denim/leather jacket/etc. And when those people who are only interested in the pieces themselves become interested in all categories: denim, boots, leather jackets, etc, which is likely because they do share similar characteristics, they automatically become heritage enthusiasts without ever having appreciated the style as a whole. Do they look great in their full iron heart or other brands? Probably not. But do they really think they do? Or are they doing this because they just like the pieces themselves? Like you said, if you care about style as a whole, you put that conscious effort into thinking about what you wear and evolving how you wear it. Most likely, some subset of those individuals would argue they are dressed well, and another subset may just say they like the clothes. It is too expensive and unrecognizable of a hobby for me to think they all want clout.

Yes I agree on basically every point you made. I do think it's OK to just like the items for the quality for the most part, but they are still clothes and if you're buying nice clothes rather than other nice things then you must care at least somewhat about style. But yes I think a lot of guys get into heritage without having thought all that deeply about style beforehand

Good video, i wear Haynes t-shirts and levis selvedge jeans with red wing or Wolverine 1000 mile boots most of the time and i dont tuck in my shirts cause they always get un tucked, i wear what i can afford. Good advice but not everyone knows where to buy the awesome vintage clothes and not everyone can afford it, but you look good bro, I really enjoy your videos.

While I disagree with some of the individual points, e.g. OCBD untucked/casualness, I agree with the overall thesis. Dave from the vintage future has talked about a lot of this in some of his car talk videos especially about making mistakes and willingness to take chances in order to learn. Great video.

I'd love to own some Iron Heart. Their 21 oz jeans are amazing and so are their flannels. Their Wrangler-inspired IH-122 jacket is also pretty sick! With that being said, I definitely noticed some people on IG whose ootd is basically: 👟: Probably Moc Toes (but the IH Generals would actually wear IH sneakers) 🧦: IH socks 👖: IH 666 👕: IH UHF flannel, chef kiss 🧥: IH Type 3 🧢: Filson (finally! something different!) Please don't get it wrong! There is absolutely no hate! In fact, I love their style! I would probably do full IH if I had the fund, but definitely not every time. With that being said, you won't see Momotaro guys or PBJ or Samurai mfs do the same thing! These guys have multiple sets of IH outfit like Tears of The Kingdom! With this level of loyalty, you're easily missing out on other pieces!

I'm not personally a big streetwear fan either. I'm just curious why they think I'm specifically hating on streetwear. I'm mostly speaking about guys who do "rugged style" and urban lumberjack and certain late 90s into mid 2000s menswear stuff that I'm not a fan of.

Style is so subjective its hard to say what does and doesn't look good broadly speaking. Some people want to look like a time traveler from the 1950s or the 2050s, and thats fine. Personally i just want well made comfortable clothes that allow me to blend into the background

I actually don't think style is subjective at all. Having a correct proportion is super important. The basic rule is you always wanna look taller than you actually are and you wanna keep your head size smaller. I don't wanna talk shit, but you look so much better when you are wearing some kind of jacket vs. just wearing a shirt.

Yes I agree. I do believe that fit is objective. Also I agree with you. There's not much I can do about it though because my head is gigantic.

@@almostvintagestyle You can always play with proportion a bit. I don't think you have a "gigantic" head. I think your stubbornness to cuff your arms is hurting with proportion a bit(respect to that, because you really want to pursue that vintage aesthetic). I for example have really big legs and that forces me to size up. Now I have to a really loose fitting waist with fitted legs; cool thing is, I also like bespoke belts.

@@Stridewise I gotcha. Flannel is a very casual shirt so I don’t mind the tails out & unbuttoned. Other than that, I hate seeing shirts unbuttoned and untucked. There’s a reason it has buttons. I have the same rule but with leather jackets. Leather jackets are the only jacket I feel u can go unzipped. Every other jacket and coat should be zipped and buttoned. Just my 2 cents.

Hm we’re oddly similar.. except that proportions. My legs are long. Short torso, long arms.. I’m 5’9, and have a 6’1 wingspan. I don’t like breaks in my pants either. Tapers pants also look horrible on me. Because my thighs are bigger than my waist

maybe when someone start to do some effort about their look/ style they use reference and stay as true as possible to that reference or getting into some genre so faithfully as if there is a hard law about anything. so they end up looking costumey or unnatural , because their mental eyes and reality is not honestly in tune, in their mental eyes they think they look "cool" and if someone say anything then they quickly assume those people just don't understand their niche style. however with time your eyes become more honest with yourself and you will add or take away elements and make your style truly your own not necessarily bound by any law.

Personally I feel like it's when people try to exactly copy the hair and starting using slang from back then. To me, that's too far. That said, I don't really care if people think I've gone too far. I like what I wear and I'm comfortable with it.

I'm neigh sure how we can tweak the language a bit or if such clarification is needed for those whom might watch whole vid like this, but I also don't just get rid of all things in the closet for some new look because plenty of times when those meh items should still be worn around the house or whatever for chores or heat wave. Have said before, etc. But also buy WHOLE new wardrobe and all these accessories that may neigh get used as much as expected or possible will hit the wallet and may needs be done incrementally also.

Oh, I spent many years with people annoyed that I tucked in my shirts for some reason. Yes, it's tucked in... for a couple reasons... I don't care how that makes you feel.

I think what happened with the Oxford shirts is that Hollywood wanted to show disheveled guys in the 80s or whatever, and they were supposed to be up all night studying or partying, right? So then it became a look but, like you said, works less good than the lazy flannel look where those guys intentionally don't tuck in their shirts because they don't wanna be mistaken for college guys or office guys or something? But students get to be more disheveled in real life traditionally than office guys since about the 60s or whatever? So chicken or egg?

i really can't get behind the whole 'tuck in your shirt thing' ..guys like you and I are way too short for that.. makes us look even shorter.. sometimes defining where you torso ends and legs start.. just makes for a ..dorky look... now, I don't wear all these button downs with flaps/tails,, which i know is pretty customary to tuck in shirts like that.. i mostly just do T-shirts, tank tops, sweaters.. or get a shirt that is short enough it can't even be tucked in.., then you'll get around having to deal with the shirt tuck 'poof' around the belt area.. i hate that effect.. tucked shirts make it look like you're wearing a fanny pack under your pants or draw attention to your a$s,, its just dorky imo..

That's the exact opposite of the truth. Now in fairness, sweaters usually aren't tucked as you pointed out.
