This is why I love your channel so much because you bring so much information, that I can use. My truck GVWR is 14,000 and my fifth wheel GVWR is 15,560 which combined is a GVWR of 29560. I've enjoyed my CDL since 1996 but haven't used it for my job since 2006 so earlier this month when it came up for renewal, the friendly DPS representative informed me I could keep my class B CDL by signing a wavier only using my CDL for personal use. So pass on to your subscribers that DPS will make it very easy to acquire a legal license if needed. Thanks again for this informative video.

Glad somebody else found this out. When I moved to Texas three years ago, the DMV people told me that I needed the Class A. When I went to take the tests, the gals at the test station argued with each other on whether or not it was needed. They grabbed the book and read it, and one was surprised because SHE didn't know it was requieed. I'd say three quarters of the people at our campground don't have the endorsement, and some of them are driving 40000 lb. motohomes. Good that you are getting this out there for people.

Maybe it's not such a bad idea for them to be required to pass a basic skills and knowledge test.

RV's are typically exempt in most states. Same as military vehicles with air brakes, all depends on how the vehicle is titled, and in what state or states you will be going through. Also farm exemptions depending on GCVW and the vehicle pulling trailer. For instance, you can title a class 7 or 8 truck as a farm truck or RV and drive it with air brakes. If you pull your gooseneck with D-4 bulldozer with it on Mondays, you sir get a ticket. All depends on what you use it for.
@swansonray597 жыл бұрын
In California it is based on the GVWR of the trailer/5th wheel being towed. Class A Non-CDL is required for: travel trailers weighing over 10,000 pounds GVWR, not used for hire. fifth-wheel travel trailers weighing over 15,000 pounds, not used for hire. What many people don't know is if you have a fifth wheel between, >10,000 lbs and = or < 15,000 lbs GVWR you're required to have an endorsement on your Class C or B license.

That is a fact. I retired from the Navy and pulled my house hold goods across country to CA. My dad's a truck driver and just happened to have a load out my way when I was registering my trailer in CA. I had to take my trailer to the police station because the VIN tag was missing a corner so they had to issue a new VIN tag. Since my trailer's GVWR was 18,000 the police officer left me off with a warning since I pulled my trailer there but my dad had to drive my pickup home. Wow, was that an eye opener and I'm glad he was in the area. It would have been hard to get my Class A if my trailer was impounded.

Your caption implies anybody over 10,000 GCWR in Texas needs a class A or B non CDL . This incorrect.That would mean anybody towing a standard tandem (7,000 rated)with a 1/2 ton truck would need an A or B. The criteria is very simple. GVWR 26,001 OR higher , transporting hazardous materials that requires a placard , vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers including driver.As long as your combo rating is 26,000 or less(FEDS) your ok.The A and B exceptions do not change any of this.

In Nevada where i currently reside, i think if you're towing with a truck and rv trailer combined of 26,001lbs. and above, you're required to have a non-commercial class A endorcement. Also, if your rv trailer weigth exceeds 10,000 lbs. you are required to have a J endorcement along with a non-commercial class A license. In order to obtain a non-commercial class A and J endorcement, one needs to take a written and drive test with your actual rig at one of the NVDMV test site. One important info i have read is that after passing the written test. A different time and day will be scheduled for the driving test and make sure before going to the test site to perform the driving test with your truck and rv trailer. Your truck must legally (by number to support) tow the rv trailer (travel trailer/fifth wheel)/(toy hauler or not) before being allowed to drive test. If not enough truck to legally tow your rv trailer, you will be turn down for the testing. If you're a Nevada resident, make sure to verify as laws and regulations might have changed. I can not confirm the info stated above as i am only a class c holder and my combined tow rigs is within 26,000 lbs. and my current rv trailer is less than 10,000 lbs. therefore, i am not required to obtain a non cld A and J endorcement.

I towed a 28ft 5th wheel (two axles) with a Dodge Cummins 4x4 with built up springs and two transmission coolers, one in front of the radiator and the other on the left side in front of the rear axle, so nothing ever got hot. That engine was only about 165 hp so anytime we hit a hill, it was turn off the OD and 25 mph. We went all over California, Nevada, Idaho, Yellowstone, Glacier and Washington. I came to the conclusion that anyone towing anything should get extra mandatory training, especially on how to handle their engine, transmission and trailer combination. I've seen issues that I think could have been prevented if the driver had just shifted down or slowed down. Engine brakes are a pet peeve of mine.

Glad you mention following distance!!! Too many people drive their RVs as if they are little sports cars.. Kudos to those states that do require special license/endorsement!!!!

A little (written) info on licenses in Texas: Class A: Single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more; A combination of vehicles with a GCWR (Gross Combines Weight Rating) of 26,001 or more provided, and this is important, the GVWR of the vehicle(s) towed is in excess of, or greater than, 10,000 lbs. Class B: Single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more; Singe vehicle with GVWR of 26,001 or more that is towing a vehicle with a GVWR that does not exceed 10k lbs or a farm trailer with a GVWR that does not exceed 20k lbs; A bus with a seating capacity of 24 pax or more including the driver... Class C: I think it's pretty well understood, in Texas, that this is the normal non-commercial that doesn't meet the requirements for A or B...allows you to drive any single vehicle with GVWR less than 26,001 lbs or single vehicle with GVWR less than 26,001 lbs towing farm trailer not exceeding 20k lbs...there's more, but irrelevant here...If your combination doesn't meet the requuirements for Class A or B, then usually C will cover you... As Class A and B both have a single vehicle requirement of 26,001 lbs or more, so dont get confused, the single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 lbs is generally a motorhome... B is best suited for Motorhomes that exceed 26,001 lbs GVWR if you will not be pulling a trailer, but be careful if you do pull a car trailer behind it, a Class A may be required for that if you use a trailer, open or enclosed, and definitely if you use a double decker car hauler...A car on a tow dolly or attached by tow-bar doesn't reach the 10k limit, unless you tow an F-350 or 450 or similar (most people in a motorhome don't becaus of this weight limit), and would be ok with the Class B...

My buddy got parked for being over weight without a CDL. He was pulling his gooseneck with a backhoe on it. 30,000+ pounds total. He called me at about 11am to come drive it home. He had to wait until 1730 when I got off work to take it. The scale house wouldn't let me get in it until I got a copy of my logs faxed to them. Because I work for a trucking company. Lucky for my buddy I still had 4 hours left on my 14 hours for the day. But then I had to tell my company so they could update my logs. It was a pain. I had no idea I would have to go thru all that just to drive his truck and trailer home about an hour away.

My state has no weight restrictions on RV's. Just a total length. Guess I can legally be over 26k when driving in TX. I like the new Ford front ends. Ford always seems to have good trucks as well.

Many states stipulate that if the trailer exceeds a certain GVWR, then an "A" classification is necessary. In Illinois, that trailer limit is 10,000 GVWR. At 10,001 GVWR, you need the license upgrade. In California, it's a bit higher, but most states are on par with Illinois. There is" NO" RV exemption for this in the DMV motor vehicle codes. If you comply with your state's requirements, you can drive throughout the country regardless of any other state's requirements. If you have a CDL B (like I did) then you'll have to get a CDL A. Otherwise, if you are non-CDL, an "A" is needed. If you don't comply, it's possible that law enforcement could impound your trailer and cite you for driving out of classification. If you get into an accident, it's possible your insurance company could deny you coverage for the same reason. Most RV owners and dealers, and their sales force, either have no idea about this or don't want to divulge that information, as it could complicate their sale. One last point: If you are planning on towing a fifth wheel over 15,000 GVWR, a diesel dually with an 8 foot bed is the safest way to do that. Be safe. Stay out of trouble. Enjoy your RV!

what about double towing ? like pulling a small boat behind your 5th wheel and dually truck. would a cdl with double/triple endorsement make that legal to do everywhere ?
@BTBRVReviews7 жыл бұрын
Brian Carroll: You can double tow so long as each trailer is less than 25' long and the total length is until 65' in Texas. Not sure about other states
@jasongebhart89627 жыл бұрын
In my travels I asked a Tennessee state dot trooper about that and he said it is illegal for the fact that you are hooking one trailer to the bumper of the other trailer with out a dolly but he also said they usually do not go after any one for doing it. There are also road restrictions on where you are also allowed to pull doubles

I think you will find that in most states the 26,000 lb max is for a straight rig (no trailer) and doesn't apply to RVs, meaning you can drive one of those monster Prevost bus type RVs with a regular license as long as it's privately owned and not for hire. (you can thank the RV industry for that) The catch comes in at gross weight for either tractor (yes, pick up's too) and trailer combined, where either is over 10,000 lbs. In many states that's printed right on the back of your license. The sticky point is if you have a Prevost RV and you are flat towing your car behind it, then you may be in trouble because the tow vehicle is over 10,000 lbs. BTW, I personally know several guys who got their CDL by borrowing a dually with a horse trailer, both over 10,000 lbs. The state of CT has since raised the bar on that one! Another sticky point that varies from state to state is a horse trailer with sleeping quarters, which may qualify it as an RV so exempt from many rules, although some states still stick to the 10,000 lb rule.

Here is an interesting restriction for class A license. I don't know if this is federal or state only: Drivers testing with non-fifth wheel connections (such as a pintle hook) will receive an NT restriction (the trailer must have a GVWR of 10,001 to qualify for Class A testing). The NT restriction indicates that you are not valid to operate a semi-tractor trailer.

Your comments do not match your words on the screen. A FEDERAL CDL is NOT required in any state to tow a 5th wheel. PERIOD. Lets set that straight right now.

British Columbia Canada has recently instituted an RV certification requirement. If you have a CDL you're not required to have it. class 1, (Any vehicle other than bikes) 2, (Buses greyhound and such) 3, ( gravel truck or that weight class. 4 (taxi ambulance) 5, (is a regular drivers licence) 6 (is a bike licence) 15 is an air brake endorsement 20 is a heavy trailer endorsement that you get for pulling 5th wheels without air brakes.

Some states require a class A license if the vehicle has air brakes and most large RV's. have them now. I enjoyed your post very much. I live in NC and drivers don't know that they have to have weighed tags for a truck and trailer combo. DMV doesn't enforce that law very strictly. My registration has a weight of 4000 and my truck is 5100 without a trailer. I didn't know that until about five years ago. Came from dealership like that. People need to check. I had mine changed to 10,000 just in case

Each state is different so contact your state DOT or Highway patrol and go with getting the max of whichever answer you get. I called my state Highway patrol after I was told I might need to have a class A license by someone and that is what the Highway Patrol also said so I went and upgraded my license. About a year or so later, DOT had a meeting in town and said I was told wrong by Highway patrol but I am keeping my class A because of which one is more likely to pull me over.

Just a note, the CDL laws are national, they are FEDERALLY regulated, not state! If you tow a vehicle with a combined weight of 26,001#+, you are REQUIRED BY FEDERAL LAW, to obtain a CDL A license. Over 10000#, your required to have a CDL C. Also, there's no such thing as a Class A license that's not a CDL. I'm here to tell you, I have experience in this area. I have had a CDL A license, which I lost because of my health and wanted to keep my class A status but, was told there was no such thing, Class A, B, and C are only for Commercial Drivers Licenses. They really need to have a separate license for RV's but, it's Federal Laws that regulate the highway transportation laws, only. State, cannot trump federal, period. Read your books. Read up on the actual laws.
@BTBRVReviews7 жыл бұрын
Sorry but you are incorrect. State law dictates the license needed when NOT a CDL driver. Federal Law dictates WHAT a CDL driver is.l
