Ugh, one of my tutorial box animation thingies got goofed. 🤦🏻‍♂Argh. Which reminds me - if you want to avoid other areas of "argh" in your post-production or content creation workflows, definitely check out the sponsor of today's video - SetApp - to access over 240+ amazing apps for your Mac for as low as $9.99/month 👉 stpp.co/matthew

I have to say, I honestly never use the timeline index, but after watching this Matthew, I'm for sure going to be using it regularly. Quickly removing attributes from tons of clips spread out across the timeline is huge. Thanks for teaching me some new things!

It's pretty powerful, man, and with all the sound design you do, I have to think it would be a huge help to use the Timeline Index. And I didn't even get into how you can use it to mess around with Roles! That's going to be a follow-up video. Thanks for watching and commenting, friend!

@@matthewTobrien That's what I was thinking. The amount of times I want to lower or raise the volume of a specific set of sound effects across my timeline and choose to do so by manually selecting them is staggering. This will really help out.

Yesssssss. That's exactly right. And if you program your Monogram console so that one of your dials is your volume control, it makes adjusting the volume in bulk even easier - especially since you can do tenths of a decibel instead of whole decibels.

nice...the Timeline Index is an essential tool for FCP users ... nice overview mate! I mostly use it to select multiple clips from the same camera for example just like you to apply or remove an effect/look/setting and yes it's good to have unique file names with camera info and even other settings like camera profile (slog3 and such). But you also showed/reminded me that I should use it more for things like finding and selecting multiple transitions or finding and copying SFX in my timeline ... cheers!

@@matthewTobrien I use Pulltube daily, natch. My faves are (in the order listed in SetApp not use) bartender, Captro, QuitAll, Meeter, Dropzone, Keysmith, CleanMyMac X, downie (used before Pulltube), DiskDrill, Dropzone-when I remember to use this it's a life saver), Focuses (for writing scripts), Gemini, lungo (alternative to Caffine), PDF Squeezer, and a few more I tend to turn on and off if I need them or if they dont' do exactly what I want at the time. Great content Matthew, love the FCP tutorials. You've saved my ass a few times with shortcuts.

Awesome! Yeah, the To-Do Markers are great if you like to watch your vids back and mark it up with notes. Glad it'll help you out - thanks for watching!

@@matthewTobrien yeah exactly! That’s what I’ll use it for. Especially when I’m getting tired and I don’t feel like doing the thing that part of the video needs in that moment, I’ll leave myself a note so I can do it when I come back to it. I always wondered if to do markers could be a thing. I always just used the regular markers but I didn’t want to get them confused with using them for other things.

SAME. HERE. Sometimes the to-do item is just too daunting, but I still want to feel like I'm making progress os dropping to-do markers is a great way of "working" without doing too much work. Especially at the end of the day when you need to assign yourself edit tasks for the next day.

Nice, Marco! I swapped out my "add default transition" button on my Stream Deck for the Timeline Index toggle a while back. Love being able to clear out the user interface with this shortcuts on my Stream Deck and on my Monogram Video Console. Definitely check out SetApp - I know these sponsorship spots can be an abrupt halt to the flow of a video, but I really think a lot of viewers would benefit from the platform. I couldn't believe how many happy I had paid for individually when a subscription to SetApp would have gotten me all of those apps and access to a ton more (I know, I know, I'm re-hashing my talking point from the ad spot, but it's true!). Will definitely keep track of the subscribers I know most and where they reside - would love for the channel's growth to allow for more travel and of course I'm always excited to meet subscribers and fellow broccoli choppers! 🔪🥦

Excellent overview! I've watched a few of these from other creators but this was really helpful with your examples. You may have wanted to stress a bit about the labeling of your content in advance to make sure that your assets are searchable in some coherent way. What is your take on Davinci Resolve vs FCP?
@matthewTobrien
@matthewTobrien Жыл бұрын
That is a BIG question. Resolve is powerful software, and I think Blackmagic is doing some amazing things with it. I love that you have access to multiple pages where you can manage media, edit, mix sound, create visual effects, and color grade. I love how advanced the grading tools are, especially node-based grading. I love how deeply technical the app is when it comes to timeline settings, export settings, etc. I love that the Lite version is free! Or simply buying a BMPCC 4K gets you a license for the full version. But, for me, when it comes to the pure craft and art of editing motion pictures...track based editing is a relic of the past, a fossil from a bygone era, and it - to me - is the major flaw of all the NLEs. Not even a Cut Page - in my opinion - can make it as powerful and intuitive as the Magnetic Timeline in Final Cut Pro. Final Cut Pro has a host of issues, features it's lacking, bewildering oversights, but at its core it represents the single biggest advance and leap forward when it comes to editing motion pictures. Period.
