If you have a spin on style oil filter you should be cutting it open to inspect the filter element for any signs of metal and other particles to check for engine wear. You can also send in your oil sample into a lab such as Blackstone for oil analysis. Our LS3 Swapped BMW E46 was making a knocking ticking sound so we opened up the oil filter and found some metal. Time to rebuild this LS3 engine and maybe do some upgrades while we are at it!

In my 41 years of experience I find that an engine knocks because the bell was broken. Just like with the tv show for children called: Samson en Gert (belgium) In this children's tv show people always had to knock on the door of the house of Samson (a fluffy dog hand puppet) and a guy called Gert. Because the bell was out of order. And so the well known line children growing up watching this show will all remember is: "Ik moest kloppen want de bel deed het niet" (i had to knock because the bell was out of order)

You guys that DO NOT understand should not be commenting. It's a "free" country but you "should" care enough for your fellow man to not steer them wrong! I'm a aircraft tech and completely understand why you SHOULD cut open your filters! You can PREVENT a catastrophic failure BEFORE it happens. The filter catches metallic flakes or pieces that you will NOT find in the oil pan or the oil that comes out the drain hole. Also... put a strong magnet on the bottom of your pan near the drain plug. It won't catch aluminum or brass shavings but can help prevent steel pieces from getting sucked up. You remove the magnet right before draining oil.
@gaden002

@@nothankyou5524 If there are metal flakes in the pan, most will settle to the bottom and NOT be picked up and sent to the filter. There is no reason to cut open a filter, unless you are trying to sell openers. Yes, this country is in trouble.

Actually the dirtier a filter gets the better it filters, the problem is when it gets dirty to the point where it becomes restricted, then it either restricts flow or if it's the kind with a bypass in it it bypasses and the oil isn't getting filtered. But yea, the dirtier one gets the smaller particles it'll catch, the biggest particles it'll let through during it's life is actually when it's brand new.

This video is nonsense, first of all I always tell people not to bother with one of those tools that cuts open filters, because the first time someone looks inside of a filter all they're going to do is freak out and spend the next month of their life lying awake at night worrying about their engine, the healthiest motor in the world will always have that in it, especially these newer engine's that have massive timing chains in them, those things really spit metal, service the primary drive chains on Harley's and you'll see what I mean, every time you remove the magnetic drain plug from the primary drive they'll have a massive afro of shavings on them, take the primary cover off and there's tons of it in the bottom of the primary drive casing, it's perfectly normal, I've had several that I had for years including one I owned for 20 years and after two decades of cleaning all that out every time I pulled the cover the chain and sprockets worked as good as new and had very little wear as per how you guage them, chains just love spitting metal. The problem with people getting one of those tools is when they first start looking inside of the filters they don't have enough experience to understand what's normal, that is they don't have a baseline, so to speak, to work with, they see the amount of metal that's actually normal and they start panicking. And even then say one has more metal in it than should be, what are you going to do about it anyway? You might as well just run it until it won't run any more anyway, cutting open filters isn't even really useful to even garages anyway for the reasons I already explained, they're really only useful to outfits that have labs and do research and development primarily on engine oil, without the proper knowledge cutting open filters is just a novelty.

@dukecraig2402
@dukecraig2402 2 ай бұрын
@@warrenmcelroy4718 There isn't any copper inside of engine's so that's further proof that; A, He doesn't know what he's talking about. B, As I said don't go buying one of those things and cutting open oil filters because without experience in the field of destructive testing you have no clue what you're looking at, what's normal and what should concern you. I've seen this sort of thing happen alot especially with Harley's, people get so paranoid over things that they actually take something that's supposed to be fun and turn it into a burden, when my bike shop was open to the public I was constantly getting people showing up at the place with things like a primary drive magnetic drain plug with the typical afro of metal shavings on the end in a Ziplock bag, as if was some kind of police evidence thing from a crime scene they were talking to a medical examiner's office, wanting me to look at it and tell them what was wrong, I'd have to explain to them that nothing's wrong and that it's perfectly normal to see that every single time they drop the plug to change their primary drive fluid, I was all the time telling people that they're making a big deal out of nothing and they're worrying themselves to death over nothing and basically taking all the fun out of something that's supposed to be enjoyable, all that kind of nonsense about sending samples out to be analyzed is a waste of time because so what, even if something is going wrong what exactly are you supposed to do about it? Tear your engine apart? That's what you're going to wind up doing anyway so just run it till it quits, you're still gonna wind up doing the same thing anyway, an engine teardown, so don't waste any time worrying about it, just run it and have fun until it doesn't run anymore, the outcome is gonna be the same anyway. All that oil analysis stuff is really only useful to research and development people (which includes racing teams) and businesses that have large fleets of vehicles, they're really the only 2 that benefit from it and even know what to do with the information anyway. As far as his comment about some particles looking like they're copper I'll bet a magnet would pick them up, when fine particles get tore from something, like the inside of a steel side plate of a chain, the heat from the friction that tore it off often changes it's color and can make it appear as some other type of metal when in fact it's actually steel, but like I said big deal, it doesn't make any difference anyway, you're not analyzing the failure of a racing engine that blew up before it could make the finish line and you're trying to figure out how to prevent it from happening again, so just run it till it quits. I love the part in that Tom Hanks movie Bridge Of Spies, where he's the guy's lawyer who gets caught as a Russian spy, at one point Hanks looks at him and says "You don't look worried", and the guy replies "Would it change anything?", there you go, if worrying about something won't change anything then why tear yourself up worrying about it.

Excuse you sir. I wasn’t ready for another epic quote. It’s never a failure it’s always an opportunity. I’ll put that one right next to “good luck isn’t always a good thing” Your quote reminds me of MTU call center for derate codes. The system was down globally and the German guy on the phone was soo extremely professional about it. Now I wanna give bad news in the most positive way possible. Congratulations your crankshaft is cracked! You now have the epic chance to tear it down and rebuild it. If you don’t feel comfortable with that, our shop will happily accept the awesome opportunity. I’ll just forget a few names and birthdays and wa la! Saved in grey matter.

As a man, I'll just say this, which applies to both men and women. At the end of the day, it is your life and that life is determined by the choices/decisions you make. Each choice/decision has both rewards and consequences. You cannot have it only one way, it will always be a two way street with rewards and consequences, so always remember that you need to consider both instead of only the positive side of it and then be surprised or outraged that some negative stuff happened to you. Like listening to women making bad choices with men or men making bad choices with women. If the consequences are not a deterrent for you and you want to keep having your life be "challenging", then by all means, more power to you. Just don't whine about it when sh*t hits the fan and you suddenly go from being a "queen" or "king" to a "victim".

No. This works for airplanes and large diesel engines. There will ALWAYS be metal particles, including copper, aluminum, and rabbit material, even for a healthy engine. Most people wouldn't know how to interpret an oil filter element. I've seen many healthy automotive engines replaced because people didn't know what they were doing. What you should always do is change your oil on time and have a sample analyzed in order to set a baseline.
