I don't know what it is about Penn, but I just feel like he's absolutely perfect for this role. I know a lot of people know him from Gossip Girl, because yes he is Dan Humphrey, Gossip Girl himself. Whenever someone asks why they love Joe so much, I feel like it's such a cop out when they say oh because he's a rich white male. I feel like it's so much more complex than that. It's really has to do with the fact we hear his inner monologue and he has a charm in the way he assesses situations and comments on the things happening around him.
@FreshPlacide5 жыл бұрын
Penn points out that this country often are quick to forgive a white male. That if the character was of brown complexion then the reaction to the character would be different. Its refreshing to see a white male who understands their privilege and actively uses it for others. Most white ppl either deny or dont recognize the privilege they have by just being white.
@gabioc235 жыл бұрын
Agree that’s its much more complex than just privilege. I think the fact that we can hear Joe’s inner monologue really makes us see from the character’s POV and that somehow helps us justify what he’s doing, because he believes it’s justified. Nonetheless the fact that he is an attractive white male does play a huge role on why we perceive him as charming instead of threatening. Also, it makes it easier for the character to commit all these terrible acts and escape unscathed, because he’s not the person who you’d typically be suspicious of. A good looking white male standing outside of a woman’s window doesn’t call attention, whereas maybe a black male walking down the street can be deemed “suspicious” just for wearing a hoodie or something. It’s the way society perceives what’s threatening and dangerous, and Joe banks on the fact that he will go unnoticed because of his appearance.
@kim32955 жыл бұрын
I guessed in the first episode that Love was going to be crazy. I had a feeling they weren’t going to follow the same plot as season 1 and that could be the only logical change. And then when she was obviously vague about her husband “getting sick”.. I definitely knew lol

But I still think people should follow the TV MA rating not because they can't handle the gore or stuff but because You is meant to be thought provoking and usually younger people kinda gloss over it and end up romanticising Joe and kinda forgetting the purpose of the show which is to be a social commentary and make us think why Joe gets off so easy because of our prerequisite notions about what a trusting man should look like etc etc.

I love the last question. A female protagonist similar to Joe. Why not both, right? I hope it maintains that way. I hope they won’t destroy Love’s character just because they only want to portray a male protagonist. I love Love’s character, her protective side of her, her vulnerability, and her side that shows how family oriented she is. Although she and Joe are demented and killers - Joe’s killing spree comes from his obsession. His obsession of Beck and Love made him kill various people. Love on the other hand, her murderous intent comes from protection. The feeling she needs to protect Forty and Joe made her a murderer. I will never condone their actions irl but as fictious characters in a fictious world, I want to root both of them. Together. I hope neither gets killed, atleast until the very last episode.

When I was first watching this show I thought it was weird that Joe didn't really seem to have a personality, yet everyone just sorta treated him like he was a normal dude. But also think (even if unintentionally) that joe's lack of a personality does kind of reflect how we expect men to act, generally. Men are sort of encouraged to repress and be limitlessy tough, amd to not acknowledge the part of themself that wants to be a loving person instead of a successful and/or working person. Upon meeting a quiet guy like joe with no real personality you might just assume he's a regular guy with anxiety or something, trying to be the perfect boyfriend because, at the end of the day, there is sorta that expectation of a lot of men. And in Joe's case, you see it manifested in a rather horrible, yet not totally unrealistic, way.
