Kung Fu is one of those disciplines that is often looked down upon. What people don't know though is that there are many different types of Kung Fu. Not just what Bruce Lee, or Ip Man showed us, but actual attack forms of Kung Fu that have grappling and low kicks like Muay Thai. With that said, in this segment we'll be looking at Kung Fu like never before. Thank you for joining me on this break down as we take a closer glance.

That's not really what this is. San da is all kung fu. The basics of pretty much all arts look the same, but some things, like that wide Haymaker style punch is seen in styles like choy lay fut and lama pai. You do definitely have san da fighters who cross train, like kung le who also wrestled and trained taekwon do, but there is plenty of pure kung fu san da.

I've trained Sanda 3 years and decided to change it for Muay Thai. On every sparring session what gives me the biggest advantige is that side kick. Nobody seen that before, you can't learn that anywhere. Only on Sanda. How to properly execute it, when to use it, and where to landing. Even my coach was "whaat, what tf you are doing, where did you pull it of" type of expression. Its a killer if you find the timing. It can end the fight easily.

I had a similar experience years ago when I trained both. I would use Sanda techniques in MT and vice versa. In MT they found the side kick seriously problematic and couldn't find a way out. I later switched entirely to Sanda...and fought loads of MT fighters after that. Same problems. If fighting a MT fighter, if your conditioning is good, they often have serious problems dealing with sidekicks, leg catches and takedowns.

Sanda is primarily a ruleset for kung fu practionners to compete in, not a style. It is a sport based on multiple traditionnal kung fu styles, mostly northern ones ( lots of wrestling techniques, straight punches and a lot of kicks ) and using modern training methods. There is also military Sanda that uses a lot of "illegal" strikes. Military Sanda has more similarities with traditonnal Kung-Fu. By the way, no movement in forms are useless. They just serve different purposes. Some movements might be for conditioning, stretching, punching, kicking, locks, wrestling etc. Most of the "flowery movements" people keep bringing up are just wrestling/grappling techniques. Kung Fu is in my opinion really efficient when practiced correctly. No matter the style.

Sanda is actually a very modern MA. It was a version of Chinese MMA before MMA became a thing. The peple behind the creation of Sanda intentionally combined western boxing, different Kick Boxing styles including Muay Thai and Traditional Chinese MA, they almost included grappling in it but decided not to because when they tried it out grapplers dominated the sport the way BJJ dominated UFC at it's infancy. The organizers thought and feared that competitions will just turn into a grappling match and since Sanda was also meant to be a sport it needed to be entertaining as well and pure grappling match are not that entertaining to the lay audience so they limited the grappling, of course when MMA became popular they realized that they made a mistake.

I saw a few Sanda Vs. Muay Thai shows in the past. The Sanda fighters won the majority of the fights just because the Thai fighters were not used to the sidekick. The Sanda fights also used the sidekick to stop the roundhouse. Now a few of the Thai fights got into the clinch and KO'd a few of those guys when they used knees and elbows. That was back in the mid 2000s.

fuck yeah ive trained with a bunch of pro mma fighters over the years, even sparred a bit with jimi manuwa back in the day too, but the most impressive thing ive still ever seen done in sparring to this day was this side kick intercept to the round kick that this random karate dude from my uni muay thai society pulled off honestly crazy how he timed it so perfectly and landed the heel of his foot into my thigh as it swung around, and just how you can almost knock people out with jabs if they walk right into it, the fact my thigh was swinging into the shot made it so brutally effective he didnt even hit me that hard, but i had such ridiculously deep bruising right down to the bone, i think i walked with a limp for like 2 weeks no joke, and could still feel it a bit for another week or two after that. never had the chance to really practice that counter myself, and my side kick technique sucks anyway, but after taking such severe damage from only a medium power strike ive had a lot of respect for people that can use defensive side kicks properly like that
@kevingonzalez3673
@kevingonzalez3673 Жыл бұрын
@@Six_slotted I assume they do not need to hit hard because it is like a head on collision in a way. All they need to do is put their heel into your thigh or hip. Your momentum is turned against you. You can do the same with a teep to the thigh or hip. The thing about Santa is their stance is bladed and always ready for that sidekick. Sort of how Thai is square and tall always ready for the round kick.

Many people look at traditional martial arts and say they would never work in a real fight. I beg to differ. Part of that problem is that many teachers do not know how their arts are applied. Its not that they don't work, its that the teacher never learned how to use that given art or never developed sufficient skills to do so. Sometimes this was an intentional oversight on the part of their teacher who feared his own student would usurp his school if he learned too much too quickly. Another problem is the fallacy that the art makes the man, it does not, the man makes the art. Thank you brother man for showing us what kung-fu looks like in its use. Lost in form men forget the function, lost in function men forget the art. All the best to you. Laoshr #60 Ching Yi Kung Fu Association

Exactly correct 💯 "kung fu" 功夫, literally has nothing to do in particular with martial arts. I like to say it means "supreme skill from hard work over time". The more proper term is "wushu" 武术 literally means "martial arts" nothing more, nothing less. Unfortunately, the term has been misinterpreted, bastardized even, in the West to mean only the most flamboyant, stylized routines for competition. But it's all "wushu", traditional or modern, right up to sanda or sanshou which both basically mean "free fighting"

The thing is, there are only so make ways the body can move. All arts make use of these. If you really look at all martial arts, the basics are pretty much the same. Whether the art calls it a teep, bençao or mae geri, it's a front kick. Whether you call it a reverse punch or a straight, it's the same punch. That's why I hate when people see san da and they say "he looks like he reverted to kickboxing" no, he didn't. He is using basic kung fu. Kung fu looks flowery when you look at forms and those forms all have a purpose. They are teaching a particular footwork or a particular power generation movement, or just training the muscles, i.e. dynamic tension, low stances and weapons training. There is also a lot of grappling in the forms. I didn't realize that until i started training judo. Learning the throws and the footwork, the lightbulb turned on and i saw that these same motions were in some of my kung fu forms. The problem is that in this day and age, there tends to be more focus on these things instead of the actual fighting.

It's interesting that striking sports that include takedowns (Sanda, MMA, Sambo) tend to employ a boxing, 45 degree front-foot stance to get both benefits of being bladed(evasiveness) and front-footed(checking kicks). Muay Thai's free flowing power kicks and light front-foot is quite impractical for sports like this, although the modern elite MT practicioners almost all have good boxing and evasive footwork like the Muay Thai GOAT in Samart(who was also a WBC boxing champ).

Kano Jigoro was the true creator of what is now known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He sent his students all over the world to learn his style of Judo/jujutsu or Jiu-Judo. Mitsuyo Maeda ended up in Brazil. Maeda proved himself by fighting all challengers. Eventually, Maeda started teaching and the Gracies were his students. Once Maeda passed away, the Gracies charged an arm and a leg to teach the art. Fortunately, Luiz Franca was also one of Maeda's original students. He taught Oswaldo Fadda. They offered free training to everyone in Brazil. Eventually they challenged the Gracies. There were rumors the Gracies got destroyed due to Franca learning leg locks from Maeda. There were rumors it was very closely contested. Those in Brazil know the full story. After Maeda passed, the Gracies put their names all over Jigoro's art. They renamed it Gracie Jiu Jitsu. The Brazilians were outraged because they all knew where GJJ originated. It was a huge lack of respect for Maeda. In 1993, they even called it GJJ in UFC 1. The Brazilians were still outraged and eventually named it Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. If you watch the early years of the UFC, there was no difference between BJJ and Jigoro's jujutsu (lots of instructional and training videos/drawings were made). BJJ evolved because of other arts and new moves being created. Example: The rubber gaurd was created by Eddie Bravo. Wrestling moves were also incorporated.

Thank you for the fantastic footage. I have been saying what you explained for years. I always stand up for the practitioner that began with Martial Arts. I began with Martial Arts and added other disciplines for my "functional" way. This will get me a lot of static, but I am tired of the UFC and BJJ. That style is not the only method, it is not the most effective and by no means, Martial Artists should never forget that Bruce Lee created MMA, Jeet Kune Do. Again, thank you for the great footage and explanation.

Sanda / Sanshou fighters include Cung Le, Weilli Zhang, Li Jingliang, Muslim Salikhov, Zabit Magomedsharipov. Quite a few Dagestani fighters use wushu sanda / sanshou. Zabit and Muslim went to a boarding school known as “Dagestan’s Shaolin temple.” Called Pyat Storon Sveta in Russian ( 5 cardinal directions) North, South, East, West and the fifth being personal enlightenment .

Sanda is essentially all the Kung Fu thats allowed under this rule set, and can be done with gloves. Its mostly Northern Long Fist and Shuai Chiao. If you take Muay Thai, and mix Judo into it (and allow those throws), you get synthetic Sanda.

There was a huge Egyptian (or Iranian) heavyweight who won the World Championships twice by pushing opponents off the mat (2 times in 1 round, you win that round). China had a heavyweight who was taller, but much lighter. So he put on weight (mostly fat), and finally won.

Shuai jiao is often the root source of wrestling in many sanda/sanshou systems. Shuai jiao is often considered the "Chinese judo". Look up some competition and it will remind you of judo. The issue with Chinese martial arts from most Westerners perspective is that they view the training methods and many technical aspects to be unsound, and to a large degree they are correct. But only inso far as what they have been exposed to. Part of the issue stems from the early charlatans that tried to capitalize on western ignorance of eastern martial arts. Many of these schools and systems are still active in the west to this day. The Jet Li movie called The Master has a good example of one of these charlatans. These are all over the world, but more concentrated in the west, this is where the fake 'no touch' ko schools come from. Many that claim Chinese martial heritage are lying. This combined with the fact, culturally, Chinese martial arts does not have formally systemized ground fighting. Because everyone was allowed to carry weapons, no matter your class, as long as you were strong enough to do so. The connection from battlefield jiujitsu in Japan, to the sport of judo, then to Brazil post WW2, to develop bjj, these aspects are missing. This is why China had a late start in MMA, culturally, but is now caught up. There is much that is effective within the full breadth of traditional Chinese martial arts, but it can be hard to see unless you emerse yourself, or have a keen eye. Sanda is the Chinese national combat sport for a reason. I encourage one to start with a book called Iron and Silk, to begin a journey into Chinese martial arts as a westerner, this autobiography can be insightful. Also any book authored by Dr. Yang Jwing Ming. As they say in Shaolin; one must adapt ones boxing to your environment and the culture you live in. The spirit of Shaolin has always been cross training, for the entire history of pre modern era shaolin martial artists from across the land would travel, cross train and share their styles. This is still seen today amongst some south east Asian Buddhist temples that hold to the old ways. Martial arts have been outlawed i China more than once, the most recent being mao. At which point only police and military personnel are allowed to train. After the dust of the cultural revolution settled, many of the old masters and their protege came out of retirement, and began to openly set up academies and organize sporting events to promote martial arts, to start and rebuild what was stolen from them. Integration with the government became vital to ensure the future of wushu. If you read the Records of the Grand Historian, you will have a clear picture of Chinese martial splendor. Here is one interesting tidbit as a peak into a Chinese soldiers career in one ancient imperial army. To become an officer you must stand the ancient equivalent of 6ft tall and to attain your position you must challenge an officer to single combat and take the post. The Chinese people are a nation of warriors with a very very long history of armed and unarmed mortal combat. Unfortunately much has been lost over the centuries. For example, similar to how a Thai boxer will have far better shin conditioning than most MMA fighters, because of the traditional conditioning routines, the Chinese have various body toughening routines that work, take very little time to maintain each day, and would enhance any MMA fighters toolkit.

I notice that a lot of martial arts with more practical uses, at least In Modern day, always stem from taking the best parts of the art and making them useful for military situations. They also transition to sport a lot better than most traditional martial arts.

The thing with Kung Fu is, many people think that fancy winding around with your arms n stuff are techniques to block or punch while in reality most of the stuff was designed to be applied as throws. Most of the Kung Fu techniques are actually a form of wrestling.

Even though I practice Muay Thai, I honestly think Sanda is more efficient. Specially on the clinch. Sanda doesn't waste time trying to setup elbows or knees. Once you get into the clinch you just have to wrestle and throw the other guy on the ground.

I think it's interesting how similar this ruleset is to Karate Combat. Striking, single legs, throws, slams - the main difference is that it apparently doesn't allow GnP while KC does. Actually there's a Sanda champion competing in Karate Combat, it seems that the transition is not big of a deal.

San Shou been around since the 1920s and included inter-style competition (not just with other KungFu but also Boxing and Muay Thai). Many of the best coaches were straight military, and never actually competed in sport prior. The sport of San Da was evolved after the last tournament winner who practiced Shuaijiao won by slamming a Thai fighter on his arm and breaking it, but throughout the tourney he took so many strikes to the face.. he didn’t look like a winner. They started re-integrating Xing Yi with Chinese Wrestling also along with Boxing and Muay Thai, you get modern San Shou. And Shou Bo Shuaijiao already had striking and grappling integrated in classes and competition before UFC 1. Zumou’s footage from France in the 70s or early 80s is on KZbin. BUT, overall, The Govt over there purposely endeavored, around the 1940s, to separate them from KungFu and to promote Forms. Antonio Graceffo has the details in his published dissertation/book.

Practical is what works over what might not work in the moment of an active person. Practice or training doesn't provide active counter actions at full speed and full emotion. This is what a style will look like when it gets used. The style will blend in training and instincts.
