The gas tractors are also filled with electronics. Far less moving parts with an electric. Unless you are talking antique tractors. In which case you have a solid point. I would ignore the extremists and focus more on your needs. And pick the best tool for the job and budget. The best tool may or may not be electric. What a conversation! I'll jump in too: It was pointed out this ev tractor is not meant to plow all day. I am sure the whole ev industry is ill advised in general. My new point? Any tractor purchase even in this HP range, is often times, a generational purchase. Traditionally will be in the family for many, many years. At least conceivably? ALL of this current EV stuff is experimental and the technology will advance rapidly whether we like it or not. My prediction is this tractor will be an antique in only 5 or 10 years. A niche market? I suppose.

Good stuff Josh! Always enjoy a stroll through a farm show. Electric tractor would work fine for me. I can mow my 3 acres in under 3 hours, that would be the only real endurance use for me. Get ready... here come all the emissions comments again! lol I get a kick out of the folks that like to throw in the coal powered electric to charge an EV or electric tractor argument. They are kinda right. It isn't 100% emissions free unless you have your own solar. But over the lifecycle of the battery in the tractor, it will create a fraction of the emissions using grid power a regular diesel would generate. Oil and gas aren't going anywhere anytime soon. The blowhards in DC will eventually cycle out of office and those with more realistic expectations for energy will cycle in. The electrification of things like cars and tractors isn't for everyone and there is nothing wrong with that.

Nice episode. I love going to farm/trade shows. So much new/ish to see. Don’t buy an electric tractor because it’s good for the environment, buy it because you want it for other reasons. I think we need development in this area for sure, but improvements need to be made. In NC the grid sources are 40% petroleum, 29% coal, and 10% gas, with the rest being cleaner sources(16% nuclear, 4% wind/solar, and only 1% hydro). The tractor itself is zero emissions, but when charging you’re certainly creating emissions….unless your charging off a solar setup.

They always claim the batteries are recycled, but due to the costs that seldom occurs. Most depleted batteries still have some capacity - homeowners buy them for home solar storage. Recycling EV batteries is like unscrambling an egg - the chemistry isn't simple to reprocess. Much of the freshly mined lithium is lost during initial processing of mined lithium - almost always done in China under questionable regulation using slave labor , recycling batteries is even more difficult. The weight of batteries make batteries costly to ship to a recycling facility - likely will depend upon government subsidies - not going to ship old batteries to China The promotions always claims the batteries are recycled, but that's an evolving industry in 2023 - likely will receive tax payer subsidies . For decades the majority of old tires were not recycled,. EV battery materials are also difficult to reuse

@@blackbearranchcanada and diesel tractors are a known quantity. You know the power and capabilities, the lifespan, you know the cost, etc. How many cycles does one get out of an E-tractor battery, what is the replacement cost of a battery or battery bank, how is the battery recycled, etc. Then there is the additional upfront purchasing cost and how is the electricity generated to charge the battery. Most people do not have their own solar array and renewables do not provide a significant amount of electricity in most rural areas. Most electricity is still generated from fossil fuels. For a hobby farmer that would use an E-tractor minimally, maybe, if they can justify the additional upfront cost and no amount of government rebates that may be offered will offset the long-term costs of owning an E-tractor. Those are just my thoughts and questions in the here and now. 20yrs from now....who knows.
@blackbearranchcanada
@blackbearranchcanada Жыл бұрын
@@prairie-skys - valid points. Think back 100+ years ago when the first diesel tractors came out. People using horses for everything probably questioned those, too. No fuel stations, frequent breakdowns, etc. With EVs, electric cars have been out for years, so it's not light electric tractors are completely new tech. They're taking tech from cars that is fairly proven and adapting to tractors. As far as lifespan, our 2014 Nissan Leaf had 140,000km on it when we sold it last year (about 100,000mi). Its battery gauge still showed 95% capacity. It got about 140km/charge so it's been fully charged about 1000 times and likely has another 5-10 years and another 1000 charges to go before it's not really useful. Not saying electric tractors are for everyone (yet) but it's fairly proven tech. Cheers

Great show for sure. The electric tractor no doubt has many places where it would be very desirable. However, I take issue with 0 emissions claim. A lot more time, energy and natural resources (emissions) are used in the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries than other types. Also, some sort of emissive fuel must be used to produce the electricity to charge the battery. Unless you use solar or wind power to produce the power ( it still takes energy and natural resources to produce wind and solar) there is no free lunch. Fun FACT: Co2 is not a pollutant. This is what trees, grass and CROPS (As in FOOD supply) use for the photosynthesis process. The plants turn this into food for the plant and then give off oxygen in return to the atmosphere. WHY would we want to reduce the very thing that plants need to live??? [And no we are not causing climate change!]

L Cee, I think you have made some good points here that I would like to respectfully address: 1. Yes, it currently takes more energy to produce and EV than an ICE vehicle however that difference is quickly made up by the fact that the EV does not burn fuel for 20-30 years of its life. Cradle to grave, EV's are much cleaner. 2. Yes, charging EV's is currently done primarily by the grid which runs on a mix of fuels. But: a. Even if that electricity comes from 100% coal, the EV will still produce a bit less carbon than the ICE over the life b. If charged by renewables like your own solar, then its not even close c. The grid is shifting to cleaner power so the gap is widening 3. Yes, It does take energy to produce a solar panel but that energy is quickly paid off by the panels output and then it is a free lunch there after. Eventually it will be the solar panels producing the energy for the solar panel construction. 4. Yes, Plants need Co2. But: a. There is no shortage of Co2 and plants are not doing better by increasing the amount of Co2 b. Co2 produces a greenhouse effect in the atmosphere that causes the planet to warm up. This warming in turn is what is causing the climate to change. This has been well understood for decades. c. We are talking about 100 million barrels of oil every day for decades. That's a lot of carbon d. With droughts, fires, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. all clearly getting much worse, as the scientist predicted for decades, even the climate change deniers are recognizing there is a problem and starting to blame things like volcanos and the Grand Solar Minimum. Human nature to never admit your wrong. That said, I agree that EV's are desirable and will ultimately be adopted and it will have little to do with the environment.
@lcee6592
@lcee6592 Жыл бұрын
@@HomesteadEngineering 1. We will simply have to disagree on the issue of climate change per man’s existence. The indisputable fact is, the climate is always changing. Not just daily, weekly or monthly but in much larger time frames or cycles. Always has always will. Too many scientists have signed off on the whole man made global warming effect. I’ve experienced too many climate dooms from the past that have never come true. In fact right now we should be in an ice age according to Time Magazine, U.S. News and many others. We should also be burned up already according to Al Gore. But despite the experts, here we are and the sky is still falling… 2. So if we go all or mostly solar power, it requires huge banks of batteries to store the energy. This means more energy and natural resources consumed to provide the billions of batteries needed to go solar. Then we will have continuous disposal and recycling costs which of course takes more energy and resources. 3. Where do we put the thousands of solar panels that would be needed to provide enough power to charge the thousands of batteries for a metropolitan area or larger city? 4. Our power grid can barely handle the energy load now. If we start adding thousands of cars/trucks/tractors/etc, our power grid will not take it. There would need to be a separate power grid constructed or major upgrades to what we have. It would probably cost a couple bucks either way. Who do you think would pay for all this? And with what money?… 5. Here’s a video you might find interesting, check it out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pqC6nIKEl9ydes0 6. By the way, this has nothing to do with admitting wrong. The simple fact is, there is no free lunch climate impact or not.

It's a viable choice if you're aiming to be a off grid hobby farmer, good for small stuff working 10 to 20 acres. Unfortunately the cost is prohibitive, and a hobby farmer probably won't get the kind of usage required to justify the extra expense. It's a rich man's toy, now in 10 years or so when the cost and energy density of the battery has improved its gonna be a nice addition

I don’t understand why these electric vehicles don’t use alternators. You would think that having something to charge the motor to increase run time while in use would greatly benefit the electric vehicle industry.

hmmm...I'd say it would take more energy to turn an alternator than it would produce..therefore an alternator would be counterproductive...great question!! Hmmmm

How many batteries would you have to replace on a tractor with 10,000 hours. I know diesels will go long past that
@smallfry1463
@smallfry1463 Жыл бұрын
It’s about the power you have to put in it. Most electricity is on a grid of sorts and they are burning coal. So the offset isn’t really substantial the more electric vehicles replace petrol based. That said, I love electric vehicles the torque is phenomenal. Is it practical, in small areas for sure. The diesels will last you a life time and are easier and cheaper to maintain. That’s not to take away from that niche application where the electric tractor excels. Especially if you can get a fast enough charge from solar.

Electric tractors now! Wonderful! Let’s all run out and buy one! Sure they’re inferior to diesel tractors, cost more and can’t really be serviced but let’s not let that stop us from “progress”. In the end we can feel better about ourselves because we have a sticker that says “environmentally friendly”. Sure the material to make the batteries is mined using child slave labor and is highly impactful to the environment, but hey that happens on another continent, to other people. We’ll all feel better about ourselves because we won’t have to deal with the noise and we won’t have little bits of smoke coming out of our equipment. In the end that’s all that really matters.

So if I'm a small farmer with let's say 10 acres of field I'm just bush hogging, I buy this and a small 3pt mower. I get 3 hours of run time? Sounds like my new full time job is bush hogging my field. How long for an roi for a small farmer? Not a tractor for a person starting let's say a tilling business on the side. You imagine your battery dieing in a client's garden? I still say keep your electronic vehicles off my farm!

Hum watched your demo on the farm; I must say your electric isn't free unless someone donated all your solar panels and installed them free. It is basically double the cost and at the end of three or four hours and you are down hours to charge. I farm and have a variety of tractors and am going to buy a new compact hoe. When I use a hoe it is for hours at a time. My farm is big enough if this ting shut down I would need a mile of extension cord. I need to remove stumps and yes I am likely getting a TYM T25 hoe. When these batteries get damaged many times they burn like mad. I would not want it in the woods nor would I want it in my barn. I like innovation; but, not when the batteries are so much a risk when on fire and also to replace.

So I grew up on a farm it was a small one 50 to 60 head of cattle. We had 3 tractors 2- 66 hp tractors and a 17hp. The 17hp got used daily for about an hour to feed hay and 1 to 2 times a week to scrape corals. Rarely did we ever use it for more than a couple hours at a time. I now have a hobby farm 5 horses I now own a 25 hp 4x4 with a loader. The only time I used it for more than a couple hours straight was when I dug the septic leech field. To be honest I should have rented a mini excavator it would have been much faster than the tractor backhoe.

You probably don't use an F150 to empty your combine into either, do you? Of course not. Likewise, if you're needing a 12 hr/day tractor this simply isn't the right one for you. It has it's place for small farms / small jobs but certainly isn't a replacement for ALL tractors.
